Mattiussi described Ami's sponsorship not as a business move, but as a gesture of support. 'Sponsoring is a weird word,' he said. 'It's more about being here, with a window to the backstage, and trying to give a chance for everyone to express their best to the world.'
The Critics' Week had been without a sponsor since Nespresso departed three years ago, but organizers decided to wait to find the right partner instead of taking on someone simply interested in a big-name endorsement.
Mattiussi, who has stepped into producing shoes with director Robin Campillo's feature 'Enzo,' which is in the Directors' Fortnight section this year, said his love of film dates back to his childhood.
'My passion for cinema has been there forever, since I was a kid,' he said. 'I was born and raised in the countryside. The [town] had one movie theater. It was a window to escape to the world.'
He added that, at first, the team had tried to find a fancier restaurant for the lunch, but he preferred the laid-back location.
'I said, don't try to find anything. There's nothing like Fred l'Écailler. This is the real Cannes you know. At night, there are kids playing pétanque here. It's the perfect place for us, and the atmosphere is amazing,' he said.
Guests including Céline Sallette mingled over rosé — practically a South of France requirement — seafood and fresh veggies from the restaurant's shared plates style menu. Rows of long tables were set under the trees next to the city's public pétanque court.
Daniel Kaluuya was clad in a brown suit from Ami, but needed a bit of last-second tailoring. The suit was new, and the pockets were still sewn shut. 'I need to put my hand in my pocket for the photos,' he said.
Staff from Ami came to the rescue and opened the stitches so that he looked casual and cool in the snaps.
Actor Hunter Doohan, in a breezy sheer Ami shirt, was feeling relaxed. 'I love this look — kind of like a chiffon, see-through shirt moment,' he said, smiling. 'They styled me the other day, and I just loved it.'
Though now a rising Hollywood name, Doohan confessed the experience still feels surreal. 'I grew up in Arkansas, so it's a whole new world to me,' he admitted. 'I always just feel lucky to get to go.'
The actor, known for his roles in 'Wednesday,' 'Your Honor' and 'Daredevil: Born Again,' said he's a genuine fan of Ami and has attended a few of the brand's Paris Fashion Week shows. 'I wear their stuff — the ready-to-wear looks — in my real life, even. It's nice to go to something you're actually a true fan of.'
He described his style growing up as 'early 2000s and 2010s, tragic, with buckle jeans. I'm not sure it can be described as style.' On the cinematic side, he's been seeing films in the selection and praised their uniqueness.
The second season of 'Wednesday' is set to premiere in August, he added. But the star remained mum on any plot details. 'Someone from Netflix would show up and kill me,' he joked.

How Geri Halliwell's Union Jack Dress Inspired a Generation of Pop Stars and Patriotism
Geri Halliwell's Union Jack dress has left its mark as a sartorial moment to remember in pop culture history. The original Spice Girls member's mini frock struck a cultural chord and quickly became a statement-making piece for other pop stars to follow. The dress, featuring the Union Jack flag, is tied to the United Kingdom's history. Originating in 1606 as the flag that represented both England and Scotland, the design was reimagined in 1801 as the current red, white and blue symbol, with the addition of the St. Patrick's Saltire. More from WWD Barbie Creates One-off Doll for Type 1 Diabetes Advocate Lila Moss How Celebrity Beauty Brands Are Doing in 2025 Dua Lipa Goes Avant-garde in Keyhole Cutout Dress for Schiaparelli's Fall 2025 Couture Show in Paris In the 1970s, the Union Jack was incorporated as a style motif for several British punk bands. The design was used through sartorial messaging, a subversion of the flag. In the late '90s, however, Halliwell's fashion statement repurposed the Union Jack symbol. Halliwell (also known as 'Ginger Spice') wore her Union Jack minidress at the 1997 Brit Awards, where the Spice Girls performed. 'There's different layers to this story,' Halliwell told Drew Barrymore on the actress' eponymous daytime talk show in April 2025. 'There's a flag; that, for me, was taught by America. You guys taught me about being proud, being patriotic about your country. At the time, it was the Brits and I thought, 'I really want to celebrate being British,'' Halliwell recalled. 'I remember [my] stylist at the time said, 'No, no, no. Be more modest.' So I went, 'No, absolutely not.'' Halliwell explained to Barrymore that the original dress was actually a 'black Gucci stretchy dress' that had been gifted to her. 'It's really corseted. It's like an old swimming costume…like a '50s swimming costume.' Halliwell stitched a tea towel with the Union Jack on top of the Gucci dress. 'I'm not very good at stitching but I'm good at the idea,' Halliwell confessed. Halliwell's sister helped sew the tea towel onto the dress. What happened to Geri Halliwell's Union Jack dress? Halliwell's Union Jack dress was sold at auction by Sotheby's in September 1998 to Hard Rock Café cofounder Peter Morton for roughly $70,000, as reported by the BBC. The auction served to raise funds for the Sargent Cancer Care for Children. In 2007, designer Roberto Cavalli made a new version for Halliwell to wear during the Spice Girls reunion tour, designed to resemble the original but with rhinestones and Swarovski crystals. In 2012, Halliwell designed a clothing line inspired by the dress, which she revisited again for the 2019 Spice World tour. The Union Jack dress in pop culture Decades after Halliwell popularized the Union Jack dress, pop stars are still inspired by her fashion statement. Dua Lipa added a Union Jack kilt skirt by Vivienne Westwood, featuring pleating and a punk style aesthetic, to her performance attire at the 2021 Brit Awards, paying homage to Halliwell's iconic sartorial moment at the awards show from more than 20 years prior. Taylor Swift wore a Union Jack-inspired ensemble when she performed at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2013. Rita Ora also wore a Union Jack-inspired look for her performance at the Fashion Rocks 2014 event in New York City. The Union Jack dress on the runway The Union Jack also made its way onto the runway. Before Halliwell's Union Jack minidress moment in 1997, Kate Moss modeled a jacket inspired by the flag as part of John Galliano's 'Olivia the Filibuster' spring 1993 ready-to-wear collection. A Union Jack minidress, among other designs, was also featured as part of Jean Paul Gaultier's Paris Fashion Week fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection show in March 2014, harkening back to the punk style sensibility and subversion of the '70s. 'The overall takeaway: Austin Powers meets Sid Vicious. A disconnect, yes, but perhaps deliberately so. After all, one of the few places the two could coexist would be on a fictional space odyssey with JPG as pilot,' an excerpt from WWD's review of the collection read. Ashish's fall 2011 fashion show also featured a Union Jack sweater vest. ‘Awards Chatter' Live Pod: Stellan Skarsgard on ‘Sentimental Value,' Lars von Trier and Ingmar Bergman
Last Friday, the veteran Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard reflected on his life, career and latest project — Joachim Trier's Cannes Grand Prize-winning dramedy Sentimental Value, in which Skarsgard plays a veteran filmmaker who has a complicated family life — during a recording of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast in front of a packed house at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. The 74-year-old, who was in town to receive the fest's highest honor for an individual, the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema, had the crowd enraptured and often in stitches. He discussed how he broke into the biz when he was just 16. He dished on colorful collaborators ranging from Ingmar Bergman to David Fincher. And he dissected his varied adventures in art house films (e.g. his five collaborations with Lars von Trier, most notably 1996's Breaking the Waves), studio movies (e.g. installments of the Dune, Mamma Mia!, Pirates of the Caribbean and MCU franchises) and prestige TV (e.g. the 2019 limited series Chernobyl, for which he won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy, and the 2022-2025 drama series Andor). In it, he is both hilarious and heartbreaking as Gustav Borg, a stubborn Norwegian director who for years neglected family in order to focus on his career, but late in life, after his ex-wife's death, tries, in his own way, to make things right with his two daughters (played by the brilliant Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), while also pursuing what will probably be his last outing as a director, with a Hollywood starlet (a wonderful Elle Fanning) in the leading role. Be sure to check out the audio of the conversation at the top of this post, as well as all of Team THR's coverage of the 2025 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival — the first since the death of longtime festival president Jirí Bartoska — at which other special guests included Michael Douglas, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard and Vicky Krieps, and at which the films Better Go Mad in the Wild, Bidad, Sand City and Forensics were awarded top prizes.
