Notre Dame's top-five positional battles to watch for during fall camp football
Head coach Marcus Freeman will have to continue his upward trajectory of the program, and that means that Notre Dame will have to find multiple new starters to continue this ascension. That is part of what the fall camp is all about, figuring out who will be able to be the next stars following the past ones.
Below, I have outlined the five biggest positional battles that we all should be watching, and let's start off with the most obvious one. Who will start for Notre Dame at quarterback against Miami.
Quarterback
It's pretty obvious this is the biggest position battle that has the eyes for Irish fans, and rightfully so after the massively successful lone season of Riley Leonard. The main combatants are CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey, as Freeman has yet to publicly announce who will take the first snap against Miami. Both are former 4-star recruits, and both don't have much experience at this level. You have to expect that Freeman will pick whoever he feels can lead Notre Dame to victory in Week 1.
Defensive end
This battle is not about talent, more about which of the injured or younger players will step up and take the starting role. Boubacar Traore and Jordan Botelho are coming off season-ending injuries while Bryce Young and Loghan Thomas are young with plenty of excitement surrounding each of them. Could a true-freshman take the reins of a start spot? Chris Burgess Jr. has the potential and Freeman isn't afraid to play first-year players.
Safety
Gone is Xavier Watts, which will leave a big hole at the back-end of the Irish defense. Adon Shuler is expected to step up, as could Tae Johnson or Ben Minich. Ethan Long and Luke Talich are other names to watch, but regardless of who takes over, you have to believe that Mike Mickens and Chris O'Leary will have them ready to roll.
Defensive tackle
Another big-time contributor left in Howard Cross III, while Rylie Mills, who repped there occasionally, also departed to the NFL. Jason Onye could big a big name here, but expect transfer Jared Dawson to secure one of the starting spots. Others that could factor into the rotation are Donovan Hinish, Sean Sevillano Jr. and Armel Mukam. If Gabriel Rubio returns to full health, he be one of the starters as well. Another position that is deep, but doesn't have solidified starters.
Linebacker
The heart and soul of the Irish linebackers Jack Kiser used up all his eligibility and moved onto the NFL. Drayk Bowen returns with a lot of hype, but who starts opposite him is the biggest question. Jaylen Sneed and Jaiden Ausberry played plenty, but it could be one of two younger players to take hold of the spot. Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa might be too good to leave on the sideline, and early enrolling Madden Faraimo has already impressed the coaching staff. It's a good problem to have, and any of them should be able to get the job done.

Bears training camp observations: Rookie Luther Burden shines on Day 7
The Chicago Bears were back on the practice field at Halas Hall on Wednesday morning for the seventh practice of training camp. It was a lighter practice in shells following back-to-back padded workouts on Monday and Tuesday. There was a heavy focus on red zone, which included quarterback Caleb Williams rushing for a score but the starting offense did have their struggles after a strong start. Rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III was the star of this lighter practice, and it's clear he has a bright future. As far as attendance goes, there were some veteran absences during this light workout in shorts. Right guard Jonah Jackson and left tackle Braxton Jones weren't spotted while left guard Joe Thuney was resting on the sideline. Offensive linemen Bill Murray and Ricky Stromberg, as well as defensive tackle Shemar Turner, cornerback Zah Frazier, cornerback Jeremiah Walker and cornerback Jaylon Johnson weren't present. Packers rookie Matthew Golden: 'It's starting to slow down for me'
After his most productive practice of training camp so far, Green Bay Packers rookie receiver Matthew Golden said he can feel the game starting to slow down as his comfort level in the offense rises. It's early in the process for the Packers' first-round pick, but the results -- including a big-time contested catch against a starting corner and a long touchdown catch during an 11-on-11 period on Tuesday -- are hard to ignore. "It's starting to slow down for me," Golden said after Tuesday's practice, via Wes Hodkiewicz of "It's starting to feel like I can go out there and just play and have fun, not have to think about what I need to do. It's just going out there getting open, knowing my assignment and alignment." As the thinking is slowing down, the big plays have sped up in frequency. On one play on Tuesday, Golden came free on a bootleg play and made a catch along the sideline. Later, during 1-on-1s against Carrington Valentine, Golden adjusted to an underthrown deep ball and beat Valentine to the ball, completing a tough contested catch for another big play. The highlight play came during 11-on-11. Golden ran a double move, improving on a route he failed during an earlier training camp practice, and got behind the coverage of Nate Hobbs and Evan Williams for a long touchdown catch from Jordan Love. The big play was the result of a young player improving in real time and a quarterback already starting to trust a rookie pass-catcher. Love said Golden has the type of "aggressiveness" in his hands that could separate him as a ball-winner at receiver for the Packers. But the biggest hurdle for any young player is usually on the mental side, and playing fast is tough when a rookie is thinking and not just reacting. It takes time before a player's assignments on every play are engrained, especially for a receiver in Matt LaFleur's diverse scheme, but Golden appears to be on the right track. Former Georgia DB Tykee Smith's one-handed interception
A post shared by Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@buccaneers) Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Tykee Smith had a bit of an overlooked rookie season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith did not draw as much praise as fellow Georgia rookies Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey during the 2024 NFL season, but his impact was certainly significant. Last season, Smith helped the Bucs win the NFC South and advance to the playoffs. The third-round pick recorded 54 tackles, seven pass deflections, forced three fumbles and intercepted two passes. Smith, primarily a slot cornerback, forced a team-high five total turnovers as a rookie. Now, Smith is ready for an encore season in 2025. He is already making big plays for the Tampa Bay defense in training camp. Smith had a pass deflection with impeccable timing on a play intended for tight end Devin Culp. In an even more impressive play, Smith bobbled an interception and later reeled it in before he went out of bounds. Tykee Smith's one-handed interception The Buccaneers' pass defense should be improved in 2025 after All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield missed much of last season with a knee injury. Tampa Bay will count on Smith making strides in his second NFL season. Smith and the Bucs begin preseason action on Aug. 9, but it is unclear how much Smith will play since he is a starter.
