Might Surprise You: 7 Hollywood Movies That Were Filmed In Asia
In these movies, you'll see Asia's authentic backdrops—ranging from historical temples to vibrant urban centers—with recognisable landmarks and landscapes appearing throughout.
So, grab your popcorn, and see if you can spot the scenes shot in Asia!
1. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) - Hello, Cambodia!
Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, exploring the mystical, vine-covered ruins of Angkor Wat? ICONIC. This movie basically put Cambodia's ancient wonders on everyone's travel bucket list. Those sprawling temples, especially Ta Prohm with its trees growing through the stones, were pure cinematic gold.
2. The Beach (2000) - Thailand's Secret Paradise (Before It Became So Famous!)
Leonardo DiCaprio searching for paradise, only to find a hidden, idyllic beach in Thailand? We've all dreamt of it! While the movie's "secret" Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh definitely got a little too famous after this film, you can't deny the sheer beauty that Danny Boyle captured. Thailand's turquoise waters and dramatic limestone cliffs were basically another character in this cult classic.
3. Kong: Skull Island (2017) - Vietnam, You Lookin' Good!
The fantastical, mist-shrouded landscapes of Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh's Trang An complex were the PERFECT, otherworldly home for King Kong. Seriously, those towering karsts and lush greenery looked like they were made for giant monster battles. Pure epicness!
4. Crazy Rich Asians (2018) - Singapore, You Slayed!
This movie wasn't just a rom-com sensation, it was a love letter to Singapore! From the glittering Marina Bay Sands infinity pool to the breathtaking Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay and the vibrant hawker centers, Crazy Rich Asians showed the world just how glamorous and delicious this little red dot truly is.
5. The Dark Knight (2008) - Hong Kong's Urban Jungle
Christopher Nolan bringing Batman to Hong Kong? YES, PLEASE! The iconic verticality and neon glow of Hong Kong provided the most incredible, gritty backdrop for some serious superhero action. Remember that epic scene where Batman glides from a skyscraper? That was Hong Kong, baby!
6. Jurassic World: Rebirth (2025) - Krabi's Wild Stonescapes
While the original Jurassic Park didn't use Vietnam or Indonesia, the latest installment in the Jurassic World saga, Rebirth, actually filmed in the stunning landscapes of Thailand. Imagine towering limestone karsts, lush rainforests, and crystal-clear waters providing the perfect, prehistoric backdrop for some serious dinosaur action! This movie truly embraces the natural beauty of Thailand, making its national parks and islands (like Khao Phanom Bencha National Park and Ko Kradan) look like the ultimate lost worlds.
7. Thunderbolts* (2025) - Defying Gravity
Florence Pugh actually brought her superhero prowess to Kuala Lumpur for some epic scenes in Marvel's upcoming Thunderbolts*. Yep, the iconic Merdeka 118, the world's second-tallest building, was apparently a major backdrop for some thrilling stunts, with Pugh herself reportedly jumping off the skyscraper as Yelena Belova. Beyond the heart-pounding action, Florence was also totally won over by Malaysia's food scene, even expressing a desire to learn some local dishes for her "Cooking with Flo" series.

Guillermo del Toro's ‘Frankenstein' Looks Absolutely Stunning
When Guillermo del Toro finally got the chance to make his dream project, an adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, you just knew it was going to be beautiful. Del Toro's films are known for a lot of things, and sumptuous production design and costumes are right near the top of the list. So, it almost goes without saying that a group of new images from the film are stunning, but these almost go beyond that. First revealed in an article by Vanity Fair and then released by Netflix, 10 new images from Frankenstein show characters, scenes, and interpretations that were previously kept secret. Here they are, all at once, and we can discuss a few of them in more detail below. Clearly, we could write tomes on the beauty of each of these images. The costumes, the sets, the locations. Each one is also framed in an interesting way that helps tell a story. But, we won't do that. What we will do, though, is fill in a few questions about who's who in these photos. Del Toro himself is just in that first image, along with Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein. We see Victor in his lab in a later photo, too. The photo on the steps is of Victor as a child with his mother, and a little later, you see Victor again (played at a younger age by Christian Convery) with his father, played by Charles Dance. The photo of someone holding a photo is, indeed, Elordi's monster, who we see covered in a cloak further down. Mia Goth plays Elizabeth, Victor's soon-to-be sister-in-law, who both he and the monster become infatuated with. The second photo of Goth is with her fiancé, Victor's brother William Frankenstein, played by Felix Kammerer. That leaves the man in the top hat, an arms dealer played by Christoph Waltz, and that mysterious photo among the flowers. That's Sofia Galasso and David Bradley as a little girl and a blind man who are in the original book. What does it all mean? We'll find out in November when Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein comes to Netflix. Want more io9 news? Kevin Feige Says ‘Captain America: Brave New World' Suffered From No Chris Evans
Captain America: Brave New World A new quote from Marvel head Kevin Feige on the fate of one of the only not-great superhero movies of the year, Captain America: Brave New World, has sparked a whole lot of debate over the course of the past day. Feige, at a recent roundtable event, discussed the issues with Brave New World and said 'It was the first without Chris Evans' as a reason it struggled. Perhaps not the only reason, but the rationale is being described as 'blunt,' to day the least. He's not wrong. This is not to say that new star and new Captain America Anthony Mackie did anything wrong, but he had not been set-up to succeed in any capacity. First, he had his entire 'becoming Cap' journey shuffled into a Disney Plus series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, that far fewer people would watch compared to a film. And as it turned out, it was actually better than his actual debut film. Second, mantle passing is just…incredibly difficult, especially in this case. Yes, this is something that happens in the comics eventually, but in the context of the MCU it's important to consider that Chris Evans' Steve Rogers was Cap 11 times over nine years. Sam only appeared as supporting character Falcon during that time, and only managed two appearances as the new Cap across five years (certainly Marvel's fault there). Captain America This would have happened with any role. If Jane Foster stuck around to become the new Thor in her own film, that would have underperformed past Thor movies. If She-Hulk (as a Hulk replacement) was a film, that would not have done well. If Ironheart (as an Iron Man replacement) was a film, that would not have done well. We just saw Yelena more or less sub in as the new Black Widow leading the Thunderbolts and that…did not do well, and that time the movie was even good. And if they actually made John Walker the real Captain America leading a whole film, I doubt it would have done any better than Brave New World. Feige is right. The movie suffered from not having Chris Evans, though that should not be taken as a knock against Mackie's performance. There were also plenty of other, very clear reasons the movie was bad as mainly, after awful editing and big reworks, it ended up being a baffling sequel to The Incredible Hulk, complete with the 'surprise climax' of President Ross turning into Red Hulk being the full-on marketing campaign, giving the film literally no dramatic tension. As it stands, it seems that Mackie's Sam Wilson is poised to be the new leader of the not-yet-really-reassembled Avengers, but once we get past Doomsday and Secret Wars, which will be a massive ensemble featuring Thor, Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four and a bunch of X-Men, I do wonder what his actual future holds. We may not see him much after this, just like we haven't the last five years. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Bat-Mite Is No Longer Canon in James Gunn's DCU
Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier talks X-Men, Eddie Murphy provides an update on Shrek 5, and Alien: Earth introduces a 'ruthless' cyborg. Your bongo to Theed is now arriving; it's Morning Spoilers! In conversation with Screen Rant, Eddie Murphy confirmed he's 'still in the booth' recording lines for Shrek 5 before beginning work on a Donkey spinoff movie this September. We're still in the booth, and literally, we're still doing Shrek. We start in September on Donkey, we're doing a Donkey one, and that'll be three years from now, but we're about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey in September. Donkey's going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey's going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They've written this funny story. We're doing that, starting that in September. During a recent interview with The Playlist, X-Men director Jake Schreier stated he finds the material 'inherently interesting and complex.' I mean, yeah, without going into too much—really almost any detail. What I can say is, it's just inherently interesting and complex material. The core idea of what X-Men is involves complexity. It's an incredible opportunity with super interesting characters and [much] internal conflict. These characters are wrestling with their identity and place in the world—that's inherently interesting and complex material. Photos from the future set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day reveal Glasgow's Bothwell Street will double as Lexington Avenue in the upcoming sequel. View this post on InstagramThe curse of an Aztec death whistle terrorizes a high school in the trailer for Whistle, starring Dafne Keen, Sophie Nélisse, Sky Yang, Jhaleil Swaby, Ali Skovbye, Percy Hynes White, Michelle Fairley, and Nick Frost. A child's drawing comes to life in the final trailer for Sketch, starring Tony Hale and D'Arcy Carden. A teaser trailer for the demonic-possession movie, Traumatika, claims any footage from the film is too intense to show. We also have a trailer for Lineage, the fifth and allegedly final film in the Hell House LLC series. During a recent press event attended by Comic Book, Alien: Earth actor Babou Ceesay revealed his character is a 'ruthless' cyborg. I don't even want to give away his backstory… but he's a cyborg, let's just say that. When I say cyborg, what do you think? This is interesting. People have been saying odd things to me when I tell them I'm a cyborg. So some people think that he's all machine when they say 'cyborg,' but that's not it. He's human and flawed in a human way. Whereas you've got people who are synths, who are, I guess, AI brains with synthetic bodies and then you've got the hybrids that are both. So he's a cyborg. The best way I can describe him, he's like an iPhone 1 in a world of iPhone 20s. But what he does have is an unbelievable clarity in terms of what he wants to do and a determination. He's ruthless for that reason. Finally, during a recent episode of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast (via Comic Book), James Gunn stated every character name dropped in the first season of Peacemaker is likely still canon in the new DCU, barring Bat-Mite. I will say that everything in the [first season episode Best Friends For Never] is canon except for maybe Bat-Mite. He's one of my favorite characters, but I can't say for sure that Bat-Mite is real. He's a wonderful character from the comics. He's an Imp from the Fifth Dimension who looks creepy and dresses in a little Batman costume. Except the ears are bent, because it's a really ill-fitting Batman costume. He's got skinny little legs [and] a fat little body, and he worships Batman. And so he tries to create these extraordinary circumstances for Batman to prove he's a hero, and it's these nightmarish scenarios. Want more io9 news?
