Keppel CEO Loh Chin Hua said the group's focus is on accelerating the growth of New Keppel and monetising the $14.4 billion in non-core assets.
SINGAPORE - Keppel on July 31 said net profit rose 24.2 per cent year on year to $377.7 million for the first half of 2025, driven by 'strong and steady' infrastructure and real estate earnings.
The asset manager also announced an interim cash dividend of 15 cents per share, the same as a year ago, and a $500 million share b uyback programme.
The repurchased shares will be used in part for the annual vesting of employee share plans and possibly for future merger and acquisition activities.
Keppel shares rallied 5 per cent, or 41 cents, to $8.59 as at 11.18an, with 10.2 million units changing hands
The company introduced a new reporting metric - it dubbed 'New Keppel' - which excludes non-core portfolio assets held for divestment. Under this metric, its first-half earnings rose 25 per cent year on year to $431 million.
Its earnings growth came despite a 5.2 per cent drop in revenue to $3.06 billion, partly due to lower sales of utilities.
Group recurring income rose by 7 per cent to $444 million, while return on equity improved to 15.4 per cent - up from 13.2 per cent a year earlier.

Keppel said its transformation under its 'Vision 2030' roadmap, announced in 2020, continues to gather pace, focusing on four key business areas - energy and environment, urban development, connectivity and asset management.
Its funds under management expanded to $91 billion as of end-June, while asset management fees amounted to $195 million.
Private funds digital infrastructure and sustainable urban renewal have also gained strong traction with global limited partners, raising $4.7 billion year to date.
This growth was supported by capital raising efforts and continued traction in private funds focused on digital infrastructure and sustainable urban renewal, which collectively raised $4.7 billion year-to-date.
Chief executive Loh Chin Hua, at a media briefing on July 31 , described the results as 'strong', derived from only a part of the group's balance sheet.
'This leaves significant value to be unlocked from releasing that part of the balance sheet that is not required by the New Keppel. By reporting the non-core portfolio separately, we aim to provide greater transparency on our performance as a global asset manager and operator.'
Mr Loh said the group's focus is on accelerating the growth of New Keppel and monetising the $14.4 billion in non-core assets , which include $2.9 billion of embedded cash and receivables.
'This positions Keppel for a further re-rating as we unlock capital for growth, to reduce debt and to reward our shareholders.'
Year to date, the group has announced $915 million in asset monetisation, raising its cumulative total to $7.8 billion since the programme commenced in 2020. It is also in negotiations to divest another $500 million in the second half of the year.

ETS expansion to Johor Bahru strengthens Malaysia–Singapore rail links

Photo: SMRT MALAYSIA: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has reiterated its commitment to extending its Electric Train Service (ETS) to Johor Bahru (JB), stating that the southern corridor project is progressing in phases and remains on schedule, subject to technical and regulatory milestones. In a statement reported by Malay Mail , KTMB said the southern sector rollout—from Segamat to Kluang and eventually JB Sentral—will be implemented in stages. ETS already serving Segamat since March 2025 The ETS service to Segamat has been operational since March 2025. KTMB noted that this has already improved travel options and helped stimulate local economic activity in the area. 'KTMB wishes to thank all passengers, local stakeholders, and the public for their patience and continued support. We remain fully committed to making ETS travel to southern a success,' the statement read. The rail operator also responded to recent media reports questioning the timeline of the extension to JB. It assured the public that its goal remains to deliver a 'safe, modern and transformative rail service' for the southern region. See also More 1MDB secrets to come out of Singapore and HK—whistleblower Phased development to ensure safety and readiness 'The operation of ETS in the southern sector will be in phases (Segamat, Kluang and JB Sentral) depending on several critical technical milestones and regulatory approvals,' the company said, as quoted by Malay Mail . Trial runs are currently ongoing for the segment to Kluang, with KTMB working closely with contractors and the relevant authorities to ensure full readiness. KTMB emphasised that safety and operational reliability remain top priorities. 'KTMB's primary responsibility is to ensure safety, reliability, and readiness before opening any new segment to the public,' the operator said. Implications for Singapore-bound travel Once operational at JB Sentral, the ETS extension is expected to improve long-distance rail connectivity for Singapore-bound travellers entering Johor by train. This could become an alternative to travel across the border, especially for those coming from central or northern Malaysia. This improvement to JB could help ease traffic and support better commute within the region. This is especially true once the ETS extension would be integrated with future cross-border infrastructure such as the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. BYD sales sputter as competition, regulatory scrutiny grow

HONG KONG – BYD's sales barely grew in July, raising doubts about whether the Chinese electric-vehicle maker will meet its annual target. The world's biggest EV seller delivered 344,296 vehicles in July, it said on Aug 1. That's up 0.6 per cent from a year earlier, but down 10 per cent from June. While the slowdown isn't unexpected given China new car sales are typically weak in the summer, BYD faces headwinds in hitting its annual goal of 5.5 million units. Chinese authorities have stepped up scrutiny on the nation's auto sector, pledging to crack down on the heavy discounts that have fueled a price war. Having sold 2.49 million units through July, the maker of the electric Seagull hatchback now needs to deliver on average roughly 602,000 vehicles a month for the rest of the year to reach its target. The most vehicles BYD has ever sold in a single month was just shy of 515,000 last December. Most rivals are showing signs of resilient demand. Geely Automobile Holdings sold 237,717 cars in July, its highest since November. Meanwhile, Stellantis-partner Leapmotor and Xpeng achieved new monthly records, delivering 50,129 and 36,717 vehicles respectively. Fellow upstart Xiaomi also reported record deliveries of more than 30,000 units. In contrast, Li Auto's 30,731 units were down about 40 per cent from a year earlier. China's Passenger Car Association said last week that retail passenger vehicle sales in July were estimated to grow 7.6 per cent from a year earlier, or an 11 per cent decline from June. Nio continued to struggle as it posted a 16 per cent month-on-month fall in sales, recording its smallest sales volume since March. But Nio's shares jumped 8.6 per cent on Aug 1, after the launch of its Onvo L90 model which analysts see as attractive in its pricing and offering. BLOOMBERG

Who is Ong Beng Seng, the tycoon involved in the Iswaran graft scandal?

[SINGAPORE] Ong Beng Seng, the billionaire property tycoon embroiled in the corruption case involving former transport minister S Iswaran and the Formula 1 night race, has pleaded guilty to abetting the obstruction of justice. A prominent business figure in Singapore, Ong is the founder and former managing director of Hotel Properties Ltd and is widely known for bringing the F1 night race into Singapore. Earlier in April 2025, he stepped down as managing director of HPL to tend to existing medical conditions relating to an incurable cancer. It was announced that he would also not seek re-election as a director at the company's annual general meeting on Apr 29. Ong was handed dual charges in relation to his involvement with Iswaran - who in 2024 was convicted of charges related to obtaining valuable items as a public servant and obstructing justice and sentenced to 12 months' jail. In October 2024, was charged with abetting offences under Section 165 of the Penal Code – which forbids public servants from accepting gifts from people involved with them in an official capacity – and with abetting the obstruction of justice. The first charge relates to flights and a hotel stay as Ong allegedly offered Iswaran a trip to Doha in December 2022 and arranged for his private jet to fly him there. The flight was worth US$7,700. The second charge was for allegedly instructing Singapore Grand Prix (GP) director Mok Chee Liang, in May 2023, to bill Iswaran for the business-class ticket from Doha to Singapore – which led to the obstruction of justice charge. The other charge, for abetting an offence under Section 165, was taken into consideration for sentencing. The business magnate suffers from advanced multiple myeloma, which has damaged his immune system and makes him vulnerable to life-threatening infections. These are some things to know about him. Origins A Malaysian citizen, Ong moved to Singapore at a young age and has a degree in insurance. With a career in shipping insurance and oil trading, Ong made millions from accurately predicting the ups and downs of oil prices during his time at Kuo International - an oil trading company owned by his father-in-law Peter Fu Yun Siak. He joined the company in 1975, and the capital he earned during his time there allegedly helped finance his later investments and property development, laying the groundwork for the establishment of HPL. HPL empire In 1980, Ong founded HPL to buy the Hilton Singapore hotel for S$72 million, marking his venture into the property, hotel and retail sectors. The company swiftly acquired more hotels and properties, especially those located in the prime Orchard Road area. In 1982, HPL was listed in Singapore. The company is now a conglomerate with interests spanning hotel ownership, management and operations, property development, and investment holdings. As at December 2024, HPL's hotel division had interests in 41 hotels across 17 countries, including Bhutan, Indonesia, Japan, Italy, Malaysia, the Maldives, Singapore, the UK and the US, according to its 2024 annual report. Its properties operate under hospitality brands such as COMO Hotels & Resorts, Concorde Hotels, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, Hard Rock Hotels, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, and Six Senses Hotels & Resorts. HPL's Singapore portfolio of prime commercial and retail properties comprise Forum The Shopping Mall and Concorde Shopping Mall. The group formerly owned seven units in Ming Arcade, which it agreed to sell for S$61 million in December 2022. In May 2022, HPL, in partnership with units of state investor Temasek, purchased the real estate assets of media giant Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) for S$2.8 billion. Another instance when Ong posed challenges for Singapore-listed companies was in partnership with Temasek-linked entities in his 2002-2003 bid for steelmaker NatSteel. The consortium, which also involved Temasek, narrowly won control of the company following a battle with Indonesian business tycoon Oei Hong Leong. Pioneering the F1 race in Singapore In 2008, Ong brought in the Formula 1 night race to Singapore. He owns the rights to the Singapore Grand Prix. Iswaran is also widely credited for playing a vital role in the country's bid to host the Grand Prix since 2008. As a junior trade minister then, he was involved in negotiations with parties such as HPL and then global F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone. In 2022, Ong secured an extension to host the F1 race through 2028, through his company Singapore GP - the race promoter for the Grand Prix - and Singapore's tourism agency. Personal life Ong is said to be a relatively private person. He has been married to prominent hotelier and businesswomen Christina Ong since 1972. Christina Ong runs Como Hotels & Resorts as well as the retail empire Club 21 and London-listed handbag maker Mulberry. The Ongs are one of the most influential couples in Singapore. They reportedly had a net worth of US$1.7 billion as at August 2022, according to Forbes estimates. As at mid-2022, they were said to be the 24th richest business persons in Singapore - months after HPL joined Temasek in buying SPH assets.
