Handover of Maoist leader's body: Pleas filed for compliance to Andhra Pradesh HC order
While Nambala Keshava Rao's younger brother Ram Prasad is in Narayanapur, working to secure the body, unconfirmed reports circulated on social media claiming the cremation of the slain Maoist leader and Sajja Nageswara Rao's bodies by the Chhattisgarh police.
Speaking to TNIE, Ram Prasad and his advocates representing in the AP High Court have refuted these claims. They confirmed filing writ and contempt petitions in the High Court demanding implementation of its earlier orders for the body release. Notices have been served to the Chief Secretary, DGP, and Bastar Range IG of Chhattisgarh. The petitions will be heard on Thursday.
Srikakulam SP KV Maheswara Reddy confirmed to TNIE that he has yet to receive official information about the cremation. Meanwhile, agitation demanding the release of Maoist leader Nambala Keshava Rao's body intensified on Monday.

Villagers block highway as private buses skip stops in Dharmapuri; RTO warns of permit cancellation
DHARMAPURI: Residents of Somanahalli and Periyampatti are distressed that private buses bypass their villages by using the national highway. Late on Tuesday, residents stopped over seven buses in Periyampatti in protest, demanding an explanation. Private buses going to Krishnagiri or Hosur have two designated routes. One runs along NH 44, where buses have to pass through Periyampatti, or another route that accesses NH 844, making a detour via Pulikarai and Palacode to reach Hosur. However, over the past year, many private buses have been failing to follow the designated route, leaving commuters stranded. On Tuesday, residents of Periyampatti waylaid over seven buses, disrupted traffic for over two and a half hours, and staged a protest blocking NH 44. A few days ago, residents of Somanahalli also staged a similar protest, blocking NH 844 by seizing two buses. Meanwhile, the Regional Transport Office has issued fines of up to Rs 1 lakh each to private buses. Speaking to TNIE, P Manivannan from Mallupatti, a retired postal employee, said, "The private buses here are crucial for labourers from the surrounding 20 villages, as most people here work in Hosur or Bengaluru. We have about five private buses arriving here daily, but since the opening of NH 844, which connects Dharmapuri-Royakottai and Hosur, the buses do not stop here. This has resulted in hundreds of labourers being left stranded and a loss of livelihood. Workers are forced to spend Rs 100 to Palacode by hiring private autos to access the nearest bus stand from where they can go for their daily wage work."

TNSTC collects Rs 1 extra on Theni routes, RTI reveals; official promises corrective action
THENI: The Theni division of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has been collecting Rs 1 extra as ticket fare in services operating in Bodinayakanur-Theni and Andipatti - Theni routes. At least 30 trips are operated in both the routes daily. According to the reply provided by TNSTC to a RTI query filed by activist A Ramakrishnan, the original fare is Rs 14 from Theni to Bodinayakanur (16.5 km) and from Theni to Andipatti (16.5 km). But Rs 15 is being collected on both routes. The collection is credited to TNSTC account. According to GO nos 48 and 34, issued by the Transport department in January 2018, 60 paise has been fixed as charge per km and Rs one for insurance for normal (town) buses for the first 25 km whereas 80 paise per km is being collected. Speaking to TNIE, activist Ramakrishnan said that an average of 150 buses are plying between Bodinayakanur and Theni. 'The fleecing is the tip of the ice-berg. The RTI reply has revealed that TNSTC is collecting a minimum of Rs 3,000 excess through one service. Normal buses are not operated between Bodinayakanur and Theni. Authorities must prominently place a board mentioning ticket fare in every bus,' he said. Ramakrishnan added that he had lodged complaints to Governor RN Ravi, Chief Minister MK Stalin regarding this, but he did not get a reply. A senior officer of TNSTC, who did not wish to be identified, admitted that TNSTC has been collecting Rs 1 extra between Bodinayakanur-Theni and Theni-Andipatti. He assured to take action to collect the prescribed fare. When contacted, the managing director of TNSTC, (Madurai) V Saravanan told TNIE that he would look into this issue, and take appropriate action.

Can't approve blood money, not recognised by legal system: HC refuses to quash FIR against man
No civilized society can approve of blood money, said the Delhi High Court on Wednesday as it refused to quash an FIR against a man accused of causing the death of a five-year-old child by negligence. Noting that the accused arrived at a settlement with the legal representatives of the deceased, Justice Girish Kathpalia underlined, 'It is the deceased child who suffered injuries and pain, followed by loss of life. That deceased child cannot be compensated in any manner. The legal representatives left behind by the deceased child have no moral or legal authority to barter away his life for money to be paid to them.' The accused, Vipin Gupta, had moved the High Court, seeking quashing of the FIR against him, lodged in 2023 at the Paharganj police station, on the ground that he had compromised the disputes with the legal representatives of the deceased. As part of the settlement, Gupta had agreed to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to the legal representatives of the deceased child, the court recorded. Dismissing Gupta's plea, Justice Kathpalia recorded, 'In my considered view, quashing the FIR after approving such a settlement would be tantamount to sanctifying blood money, which is not recognised by our legal system.' Gupta was booked for the alleged offences of rash and negligent driving (IPC section 279) and causing death by negligence (IPC section 304A). According to the prosecution's case, Gupta, while driving his car in a rash and negligent manner, hit an e-rickshaw due to which a five-year-old child got crushed under the e-rickshaw that had overturned due to the impact of the crash. The child was declared dead when taken to the hospital. While Gupta had blamed the e-rickshaw driver for being drunk, the Investigating Officer in the case had refuted the claim, informing the court that the e-rickshaw driver was not found to be under the influence of alcohol. The prosecution had vehemently opposed the plea for quashing the FIR on the grounds of settlement with the deceased child's representative. Additional Public Prosecutor Manjeet Arya told The Indian Express that one of the key grounds of opposition was that 'while some countries accept blood money as settlement, including for offences such as murder, our country and legal system doesn't, regardless of whether the victim is a child or an adult, rich or poor.' Arya added that while charges have been framed in the case, the trial is yet to begin.
