South Korea says timeline for US car tariff cut uncertain
President Donald Trump said last week the US will charge a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea, including cars, as part of a deal that eases tensions with a top-10 trading partner and key Asian ally. The 15% US tariffs on most items coming from South Korea are due to take effect from Thursday.
South Korean carmakers such as Hyundai Motor and Kia want the tariff cut brought in swiftly to create a level playing field with Japanese and European rivals.
Separately, Japan's top tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa said he would head to Washington this week to press Trump to sign an executive order to bring the cut to tariffs on Japanese car imports into effect.
In the technology sector, Kim said the countries had agreed to continue talks on online platform legislation to make sure US tech companies were not unfairly treated compared with domestic firms.
"Though the digital issue was not included in the latest agreement, there are major concerns about it among the US government, parliament and businesses," he said at a parliamentary session.
The minister reiterated there had been no agreement on the opening of the agriculture market, including beef, rice, fruit and other farm good, as part of the deal.
He said the countries will increase cooperation in the quarantine process for fruit and vegetables, which has been cited by Washington as one of the non-tariff barriers US farmers face.
South Korean finance minister Koo Yun-cheol said at a separate parliamentary session the US viewed the quarantine process for fruit and vegetables as too slow and asked Seoul to introduce a rational and scientific process.

In the joint press statement in Tokyo, Wadephul also criticised "China's support for the Russian war machine" in Ukraine. "Without it, the war of aggression against Ukraine would not be possible. China is Russia's largest supplier of dual-use goods and Russia's best oil and gas customer," Wadephul said. He also said ahead of talks later Monday between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders that security guarantees for Kyiv were "crucial". Trump's summit on Friday with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska "made it clear that for a just and lasting peace, Moscow must finally act. Until that happens, pressure on Russia must be increased, including with increased aid to Ukraine," Wadephul said. The talks on Monday in Washington are about establishing "the elements of a negotiated solution on the path to a just peace for Ukraine," he said.

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump said reclaiming Crimea or entering NATO were off the table for Ukraine, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington for Monday talks aimed at ending the war with Russia. Zelensky, who has repeatedly rejected territorial concessions, will meet Trump in Washington on Monday, accompanied by European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and other leaders. The meeting comes on the heels of a summit between Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, which failed to yield a ceasefire breakthrough but produced promises from both leaders to provide "robust security guarantees" to Ukraine. Zelenskyy was not invited to the Alaska meeting, after which Trump pivoted to the long-held Russian position that a ceasefire was not needed before a final peace deal. 'It tells you how badly he wants peace, how much he values peace, that he would be willing to make a concession like that …That's what we'll talk about tomorrow.' Rubio said U.S. officials discussed security details for Ukraine with the national security advisers of multiple European countries on Saturday, adding that the aim would be to build in details that could ultimately be presented to Russia as part of a peace agreement. He told Fox News that the talks between Trump and Putin on Friday had narrowed the number of key issues, which include drawing borders and military alliances for Ukraine as well as security guarantees. According to sources, Trump and Putin discussed proposals for Russia to relinquish tiny pockets of occupied Ukraine in exchange for Ukraine ceding a swathe of fortified land in the east and freezing the front lines elsewhere. Rubio said Russia and Ukraine would not be able to get everything they want. 'If one side gets everything they want, that's not a peace deal. It's called surrender, and I don't think this is a war that's going to end anytime soon on the basis of surrender,' Rubio told CNN. In a separate interview on ABC, Rubio said if a deal could not be reached to end the war, existing U.S. sanctions on Russia would continue, and more could be added. When Zelenskiy visited the White House in February, the meeting ended in a shouting match. Rubio, speaking to CBS, dismissed the idea that the European leaders were coming to Washington to protect Zelenskiy. 'They're not coming here tomorrow to keep Zelenskiy from being bullied. They're coming here tomorrow because we've been working with the Europeans,' he said. 'We invited them to come.'
