Excess fare: warrants issued against MD of TNSTC, Coimbatore, and RTO, Coimbatore North

The Hindu15-05-2025
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Coimbatore, has issued warrants against the Managing Director, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Coimbatore, and the Regional Transport officer, Coimbatore North, for failure to comply with an order passed on February 15, 2018, in a case of collection of excess fare lodged by Coimbatore Consumer Cause.
An execution petition filed by K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary, Coimbatore Consumer Cause, during November 2023, cited the dismissal of an appeal made against the order by the State Consumer Commission and also a review petition in 2023.
During 2018, three years after he had filed a case before the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Coimbatore, the complainant was refunded the excess fare of ₹6 charged from him for to and fro travel between Vadavalli and Railway Station, along with ₹6,500 towards legal expenses.
The petitioner had called for deposit of the excess fare collected during the three-year period in the Chief Minister Relief Fund.
The TNSTC, Coimbatore, and the Regional Transport Officer, Coimbatore North, had paid the costs and the TNSTC, Coimbatore, had also deposited the fine of ₹ 10,000 along with interest at 9% for three years amounting to ₹ 7,532 to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund.
A copy of the order was sent to the Chief Secretary and to the Transport Commissioner of Tamilnadu Government to stop such excess collection.
However, the TNSTC had claimed that the details of collection from 2015 to 2018 had been destroyed, and, hence, could not file the statement of excess collection.
The Hon'ble Commission had, in its verdict cited the Government Rule mandating all the State Transport Corporations to preserve money value documents at least for a minimum period of 8 years as stipulated in the Companies Act 1956. The TNSTC, Coimbatore, had violated the Rule and the order of this Commission, Mr. Kathirmathiyon had contended in his executive petition.
The bailable warrants were issued under Section 72 of Consumer Protection Act 2019.

TNSTC collects Rs 1 extra on Theni routes, RTI reveals; official promises corrective action

THENI: The Theni division of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has been collecting Rs 1 extra as ticket fare in services operating in Bodinayakanur-Theni and Andipatti - Theni routes. At least 30 trips are operated in both the routes daily. According to the reply provided by TNSTC to a RTI query filed by activist A Ramakrishnan, the original fare is Rs 14 from Theni to Bodinayakanur (16.5 km) and from Theni to Andipatti (16.5 km). But Rs 15 is being collected on both routes. The collection is credited to TNSTC account. According to GO nos 48 and 34, issued by the Transport department in January 2018, 60 paise has been fixed as charge per km and Rs one for insurance for normal (town) buses for the first 25 km whereas 80 paise per km is being collected. Speaking to TNIE, activist Ramakrishnan said that an average of 150 buses are plying between Bodinayakanur and Theni. 'The fleecing is the tip of the ice-berg. The RTI reply has revealed that TNSTC is collecting a minimum of Rs 3,000 excess through one service. Normal buses are not operated between Bodinayakanur and Theni. Authorities must prominently place a board mentioning ticket fare in every bus,' he said. Ramakrishnan added that he had lodged complaints to Governor RN Ravi, Chief Minister MK Stalin regarding this, but he did not get a reply. A senior officer of TNSTC, who did not wish to be identified, admitted that TNSTC has been collecting Rs 1 extra between Bodinayakanur-Theni and Theni-Andipatti. He assured to take action to collect the prescribed fare. When contacted, the managing director of TNSTC, (Madurai) V Saravanan told TNIE that he would look into this issue, and take appropriate action.

Coimbatore Corporation's foot overbridge proposal at Gandhipuram and Ukkadam awaits State government approval

The Coimbatore Corporation's plan to construct foot overbridges (FOBs) in Gandhipuram and Ukkadam is awaiting approval from the State government. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been submitted, with an estimated cost of ₹8 crore for each location. Owing to its proximity to Town, Central, and Thiruvalluvar bus termini, Gandhipuram Junction witnesses heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic. In response, the Corporation has proposed three foot overbridges: one across Bharathiar Road linking the Thiruvalluvar and Town bus stands; another connecting the Town Bus Stand to Cross Cut Road; and a third across Dr. Nanjappa Road providing access to the Central Bus Stand. In Ukkadam, one bridge is planned between the bus stand and Smart City Lake, and another near the proposed second terminal of Ukkadam bus stand. A Corporation official said the DPR was submitted earlier this month, and the project, to be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, will feature staircases, escalators, lifts, and designated space for advertisements. 'We are awaiting administrative sanction from the State government. Work will begin once it is received,' the official said. K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, recalled that a subway had earlier been planned along the Gandhipuram flyover with budgetary allocation, but was dropped by the Highways Department. He welcomed the Corporation's move to build FOBs, but cautioned that permitting advertisements on them could pose a road safety risk by distracting drivers and increasing the likelihood of accidents.

XRP price prediction - Is this Ripple alternative a better bet?

Advertorial Spotlight Wire Fuelled by the broader market rally and friendly regulatory shifts, the XRP price had a strong comeback in July, pumping by over 60%. But this is crypto. Here, charts flip in hours. So, can XRP continue to climb, or does it need a breather amid growing competition from new players like Bitcoin Hyper? XRP fundamentals are strong, but ETF drama throws a curveball After years of legal battle, Ripple is finally on the path to resolving its differences with the SEC. The Trump government is boldly in favour of crypto, rapidly clearing regulatory clouds. However, regulations are not a cakewalk for XRP yet. XRP price performance in June-July, source: CoinMarketCap The XRP price owes its recent surge to the broader market rally. But why XRP? Investors have been stocking up on XRP in renewed hopes for institutional adoption through ETFs. But soon came the twist: the SEC halted the approval of Bitwise's 10 Crypto Index ETF, which includes XRP. Interestingly, it was just hours after the staff greenlit it, and this is the second time this month the commission hit pause under Rule 431. Grayscale's XRP-inclusive GDLC fund was also put on ice recently. Inevitably, the move has spooked investors and raised short-term doubts for the Ripple price. But the altcoin giant's fundamentals are solid, as RippleNet and cross-border payments give it utility beyond the speculative crowd. XRP has eyes set on big goals this year XRP's technical indicators are screaming bullish. The monthly time frame shows 14 buy signals out of 23, while moving averages flash 11 buys. With bullish momentum intact, $6.00 is not a long shot for XRP in the short term, and it could even climb to $6.80 by year-end if market conditions hold. An optimistic, yet realistic XRP price prediction for the end of Q3 2025 is in the $5.80–$6.20 range. XRP technical analysis, source: CoinMarketCap Crypto analysts such as Vincent highlight more trends to establish the bullish narrative, especially with institutions such as JP Morgan recognising XRP as valid collateral. As capital floods back into crypto, XRP is showing textbook consolidation-and-breakout patterns. Crypto influencer and analyst Austin Hilton points out that the liquidity surge across the market is a good sign, as capital is rotating from Bitcoin into major altcoins like XRP and to him, XRP could hit $5 by the end of July, contingent on continued inflows and macro strength. For Q4 2025, the projections are more varied, ranging from $12 to $30. The long-term view is that $100 per XRP is doable for XRP, although it is likely years away. The forecast is tied to broader crypto expansion, especially if Bitcoin touches $200K and Ethereum cracks $10K. Bitcoin Hyper raises $4 million as Layer-2 fuels interest Let's forget about XRP for a second and talk about a new crypto for our watchlists. Bitcoin Hyper ($HYPER) is racing through its presale. It has already clocked in $5.5 is behind Bitcoin Hyper's growing momentum? The project is building a Layer-2 on the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) for Bitcoin decentralised apps (dApps) and transactions. Using $HYPER tokens, users can bridge BTC into Hyper L2, transact near-instantly, then bridge out securely. That means decentralised finance (DeFi), gaming, and even meme coins on Bitcoin's base security, but with Solana-like speed. With this move, Bitcoin Hyper is positioning itself as Bitcoin's missing execution layer. The $HYPER presale offers a short window to grab the upcoming altcoin before it hits crypto exchanges. As one of the few projects that efficiently taps into Bitcoin branding and utility at the same time, investors are piling in on the presale. Could $HYPER outpace XRP? XRP is clearly the blue-chip star this season, but Bitcoin Hyper offers something XRP doesn't: low market cap and early-mover advantage in the Bitcoin L2 the market taps into pro-crypto regulations and ETF approvals, new utility projects could dominate the hot charts with multifold gains. But investors don't have time till then to grab $HYPER for fixed, discounted prices. The presale is rapidly selling out. In addition, it follows a tiered structure, with each new phase slightly more expensive than the previous. The dynamic passive rewards, on the other hand, decline for latecomers.
