Operating in broad daylight, the armed mob were seen attacking a police van to free a British drug lord who was being escorted to a dental clinic to receive medical attention.
The gang wore bulletproof vests, used a motorcycle and a high-end vehicle with forged licence plates they later set on fire.
But while the assailants successfully freed the prisoner he was arrested hours later by the Spanish Civil Guard.
The October 2023 attack - dubbed "Van Ibiza" - has since been confirmed as a "highly planned" operation conducted by a very "sophisticated" network of gang members.
Their objective was the release of a Brit serving a sentence for drug trafficking and money laundering, the Civil Guard said.
A spokesperson for the force added: "As the investigation progressed, it was found that it was a highly planned operation with a very sophisticated network, whose objective was the release of a prisoner of British origin, who was serving a sentence in the prison of Ibiza, for crimes of drug trafficking and money laundering at an international level."
"In addition, it was found that it was a criminal organisation of English origin, of great police interest to international organisations, which was sustained by drug trafficking and high-end vehicles stolen internationally."
"The individuals who acted in the assault on the police van had a great specialisation in similar events.
"In fact, it was found that some of them had a record for homicide in third countries, as well as arms and drug trafficking."
Following the assault - where assailants "intimidated the agents who were guarding a prisoner with firearms" - an urgent investigation into the group was launched.

Searches were carried out in homes and warehouses used by the gang.
Around 80,000 euros in cash and a stolen vehicle were seized, as well as large amount of drugs and documents containing details of the planned raid.
A year and a half later, cops successfully identified all those involved and confirmed they had record and arrest warrants in the UK.
The five gang members are being charged with crimes of evasion of conviction, aggravated attack against law enforcement officers, drug trafficking, membership of a criminal group, injuries and illegal possession of firearms.
A European Police Office spokesperson said: "The investigation began as a result of a violent assault that occurred in 2023, on a busy public road in Ibiza and in the morning.
"The assailants intimidated the agents who were guarding a prisoner with firearms."
The spree of arrests comes as glamorous rapper dubbed the "Barbie Bandit" was arrested in a dramatic police raid targeting a massive dark web drugs operation.
Maria L., 25, known for posing in Barbie-pink outfits and flaunting an assault rifle on social media, was seized by Russian cops in St Petersburg on May 15.
The influencer-turned-trafficker is accused of helping run a slick online drugs shop — managing storage, distribution, and sales of illicit substances through the dark web.
Photos online show the rapper in crop tops and doll-like makeup, living a flashy life that masked a far more dangerous double identity.
Police said: 'She helped sell the drugs online and also managed their storage and distribution.'
During the raid, cops uncovered laptops, mobile phones, and a 'significant' stash of chemicals used to make hallucinogens — along with scales and other manufacturing gear.

100 football hooligans attack each other before 'friendly' on Canary Islands, as Spanish police rush in to stop thugs causing chaos
Spanish police were forced to rush in and break up a skirmish after 'around 100' football hooligans attacked each other during a pre-season friendly. CD Tenerife and UD Las Palmas squared off in a fiery Canary Islands derby showdown which boiled over into disgraceful scenes on Saturday. Footage taken before kick-off and shared widely across social media showed a large band of hooligans - many of whom were shirtless - abandoning their seats. They then marched around the side of the pitch and attempted to break into another stand, forcing the supporters there to quickly look to move away. According to Spanish publication El Partidazo de Cope, the videos showed travelling Las Palmas thugs leaving their designated area to try and attack home supporters. They appeared to throw multiple missiles toward the home section while some were even spotted attempting to launch barriers to cause maximum disruption. 🚨 ÚLTIMA HORA | Altercados en la previa del @CDTOficial y la @UDLP_Oficial del Trofeo Teide 😱 Se desplazaron entre 80 y 100 aficionados radicales del conjunto 'Pío-pío' 🚓 Tuvo que intervenir la Guardia Civil 📻 #PartidazoCOPE — El Partidazo de COPE (@partidazocope) August 2, 2025 Fortunately, police officers and La Guardia Civil were quick to rush to the scene. With both sets of supporters separated once more, the chaos fizzled out. Videos of the melee spread across X, with users disgusted with the disorder. 'A friendly, regrettable,' one account posted. 'They have tarnished the badge of UD Las Palmas and brought absolute shame,' another added. 'That said, not everyone on the other side will be saints either.' 'They don't know how to behave, they always get heated, and they don't represent the fans of the UD,' a third user damningly declared. A fourth wrote: 'One must be daft to organise a friendly derby!' Another viewer simply said: 'Morons being morons.' The Teide Trophy 'friendly' ended in a 1-1 draw and went to penalties. Tenerife went on to claim the bragging rights after winning the shootout 4-1, ensuring they got their hands on the silverware after a fractitious afternoon.

BBC faces criticism over delay in paying court-ordered damages to Gerry Adams
The BBC has been criticised for not yet having paid court-ordered damages to former Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams. The corporation lost a major defamation case earlier this year after Mr Adams took them to court over a 2016 episode of its Spotlight programme and an accompanying online story. They contained an allegation that Mr Adams sanctioned the killing of former Sinn Fein official Denis Donaldson. Mr Adams denied any involvement. In May, a jury at the High Court in Dublin found in his favour and awarded him 100,000 euros (£84,000) after determining that was the meaning of words included in the programme and article. The BBC, which was found by the jury not to have acted in good faith nor in a fair and reasonable way, was also ordered to pay the former Sinn Fein leader's legal costs. Adam Smyth, director of BBC NI, expressed disappointment in the verdict and said the corporation believes it supplied extensive evidence to the court of the careful editorial process and journalistic diligence applied to the programme and accompanying online article. After the decision, the broadcaster's legal team was granted a stay in the payment of the full award as it took time to consider an appeal, subject to paying half the damages (50,000 euros or £42,000) and 250,000 euros (£210,000) towards solicitors' fees. In June, the BBC confirmed it would not pursue an appeal. However, it is understood that by August 1 the BBC had not paid the damages. Mr Adams previously indicated that he planned to donate what he receives to good causes. He specified that these would include for children in Gaza as well as groups in the Irish language sector and those who are homeless. A source close to Mr Adams told the PA news agency: 'The delay by the BBC is deplorable and it should move speedily towards discharging the order of the court.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'Total costs will be finalised and payable in due course.'
