Dwayne Johnson Transforms Into UFC Legend Mark Kerr in 'The Smashing Machine' Trailer
Dwayne Johnson is entering new territory with his latest role.
On Tuesday, April 29, A24 released the trailer for Johnson's new movie The Smashing Machine, a biographical drama in which he portrays real-life UFC legend Mark Kerr. Johnson, who holds a long-running career as a WWE wrestler that dates back to before he broke into movies, steps back into a combat sport to portray Kerr, 56, through his mixed martial arts career and the early years of Dana White's UFC.
An official synopsis for the movie simply describes The Smashing Machine as "the story of legendary mixed martial arts & UFC fighter Mark Kerr." The trailer meets Johnson as Kerr explaining the UFC to a woman in a waiting room. Costar Emily Blunt, who plays Mark's then-wife Dawn, is seen rooting for Mark during his fights and supporting him away from the ring, even as he struggles with his training and the associated pain that comes with participating in a high-stakes sport.
Mark's climactic fight with close friend and fellow Mark Coleman is teased in the trailer, as are arguments — and emotional reunions — with Dawn. At the trailer's end, Johnson's character signs an autograph for a young fan and playfully advises him not to get into fighting.

The real-life Kerr shared the movie's poster to his Instagram on Monday, April 28 and wrote in a caption to the post that he remains "in disbelief that this is real." "I am so proud of the work DJ put into becoming The Smashing Machine. I have so much gratitude, humility and respect for every little detail production uncovered," Kerr wrote in a caption. "Can't wait to share this experience with the world."

Kerr's career and life story was previously covered in the 2002 documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr, which displays the mental and physical toll MMA fighting takes on its competitors.

Aside from Johnson and Blunt — who reunite in The Smashing Machine after they costarred in Disney's 2021 movie Jungle Cruise — the film also stars Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten and Oleksandr Usyk. Benny Safdie, the actor and filmmaker who directed movies like Uncut Gems and Good Time, wrote and directed.
The Smashing Machine hits theaters Oct. 3.

The estranged wife of actor Scott Wolf was seemingly detained by law enforcement during an Instagram livestream, during which she can be heard scolding officers and alleging she was abused. The clip, which appeared on Kelley Wolf's social media profile early Friday, starts out with a black screen with only audio, and it remains that way until nearly the end, when she can be standing alongside a pair of police officers. It comes just three days after she revealed that she and her 'Party of Five' star husband were headed for divorce after 21 years. 'Oh my God. Don't,' a voice, seemingly Kelley's, can be heard saying in the clip. 'Oh my God, this is not happening.' The mother of the three goes on tell responding officers she'd leave with them on her own, but her offer is still followed by what sounds like handcuffs clicking closed. 'This is shameful, gentlemen,' she tells them. 'Look at this, look at this woman, this is shameful. Be ashamed, be ashamed of yourselves, gentlemen.' One of the officers then informs Kelley that she's 'not going to jail,' but rather to get 'some help.' He notes that she had 'made some comments to your dad and comments to people that are concerning,' and that they 'want to make sure you're okay.' 'I didn't mean to,' Kelley said, asking the police if she should turn off her camera. 'I think Scott Wolf is abusing me, and now you are abusing me more.' Shortly after posting the video, Kelley shared an image to her Instagram feed covered in chunks of text, including one that reads: 'This is horrible. I have been taken against my will. Please check on my kids.' Another said: 'Also… I am happy!! Happier than I have ever been.' She also noted that she'd been 'compliant, calm and respectful' adding that she hoped 'this is all sorted very quickly. 'In the meantime, be kind to each other,' she concluded. 'This is one of the darkest things I've ever experienced.' Kelley also chose Instagram as the platform to announce her split from Wolf, with whom she shares sons Jackson and Miller as well as daughter Lucy, on Tuesday. She called it 'the most difficult decision of her life.' Wolf meanwhile told TMZ he plans to keep focused on his children amid the divorce proceedings.

Who thought Francis Ngannou would ever be seen again on a UFC stage? It happened Friday when Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, accompanied former welterweight champ Kamaru Usman to the scale during the UFC on ESPN 69 ceremonial weigh-ins at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Usman meets Joaquin Buckley in Saturday night's main event (ESPN, ESPN+). Ngannou's appearance came as a surprise considering how much UFC CEO Dana White has publicly bad-mouthed Ngannou ever since he chose not to re-sign with the UFC in January 2023, at times making things personal. As has increasingly been the case, White did not oversee Friday's UFC on ESPN 69 ceremonial weigh-in faceoffs. A person with knowledge of the situation told MMA Junkie that Ngannou is not a licensed cornerman for his good friend, Usman. Ngannou, who wore officially licensed UFC Venum gear, joined Usman on stage only as a show of support. Ngannou, 38, hasn't competed since last October, when he defeated Renan Ferreira by knockout in his PFL debut. There's no word when he could fight again. Last month, Ngannou was involved in a fatal motorcyle accident in his native Cameroon, which killed a young woman. Ngannou struck the young woman with his motorcycle while she was walking.
