Dubai Culture Announces Etihad Museum Research Grant Recipients - Middle East Business News and Information
Artist Asma Yousef Al Ahmed and hiker-photographer Mohammed Ahmed Ahli, together with archaeologist-museologist Annissa Maulina Gultom, were awarded the grant. Their submissions stood out for originality and unique methodologies, offering new perspectives on UAE narratives. The recipients were also selected based on how well their project met the programme's evaluation criteria, which considered relevance to Emirati identity, thematic focus, data-collection methods, audience engagement, and its contribution to activating the museum's spaces.
Asma and Mohammed will collaboratively document the wild mountain plants of the Hajar Mountains through their project 'Rooted in Stone: A Botanical Reflection from the UAE Hajar.' By combining botanical research, oral histories, photography, plant pressing, and artistic interpretation, they will produce a bilingual art encyclopaedia, 'Rooted in Stone,' which depicts the ecological and cultural importance of the UAE's landscapes.
Meanwhile, Annissa will reconstruct H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's early journeys through her work: 'Offroad Diplomacy: Sheikh Zayed's Domestic Tours Across the Emirates (1966–1976) and the Establishment of E11 as the Nation's Lifeline.' Through archival photographs, infrastructure reports, and cross-referenced historical data, her work will examine how early development efforts, particularly the creation of the E11 highway, laid the groundwork for national unification under Sheikh Zayed.
Over the next 12 months, both projects will engage in a programme of field exploration, research, and documentation. The culmination will be a series of public programmes and interventions integrated into the Etihad Museum's cultural season, ensuring accessible and impactful knowledge-sharing with diverse audiences.
The Etihad Museum Research Grant was launched under the umbrella of the Dubai Cultural Grant, an initiative under the emirate's Quality of Life Strategy. Over ten years, up to AED 180 million will be directed toward empowering professionals across the cultural and creative industries – reinforcing Dubai's position as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.

Sharmoofers, Massar Egbari, Hamid El-Shaeri - music Friday, 8 August, 9pm Porto Golf, Alamein, North Coast This triple bill brings together known Egyptian bands and a Libyan-Egyptian singer. Sharmoofers is an Egyptian band known for their unique blend of music genres, including reggae and rock. The band was formed in 2012 and quickly gained popularity in the Egyptian music scene. Founded in 2005, Massar Egbari has gained a large popularity in Egypt and beyond. Their lineup features Hani El-Dakkak on guitar and lead vocals, Ahmed Hafez on bass guitar, Tamer Attallah on drums, Ayman Massoud on keyboards, and Mahmoud Siam on guitar. They regularly sell out concerts in Egypt and have also performed in the region and internationally. El-Shaeri was born in Libya to an Egyptian mother and Libyan father. At the time of formation, the youngest member of the band was just 11 years old. As the band's popularity grew, new generations subsequently joined the ensemble. Soon, Abu Shaar Brothers became an internationally renowned Syrian Islamic nasheed group, whose music and lyrics focus on a religious repertoire. They have more than 600,000 followers on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The band currently reside in Egypt, where they hold many concerts. Nabeel Shuail - music Saturday, 9 August Beach Resort, Marassi Nabeel Shuail is a celebrated Kuwaiti singer renowned for his powerful voice and significant contributions to the Khaleeji music scene. He began his musical career in the early 1980s, gaining widespread recognition with his debut album Sikat Safar in 1982. Over the years, Shuail, affectionately known as the "Gulf Nightingale," has released over 26 albums. His upcoming concert in Egypt is part of the Layali Marassi, a summer series providing performances of the best-known singers at the Beach Resort, Marassi. Dubai Culture Launches ‘Harakat Sikka' to Nurture Next‑Gen Animators
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – August 2025: Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is now accepting applications for Harakat Sikka, a stop‑motion animation and visual storytelling training programme under the Sikka Platform. By giving emerging creatives room to experiment, learn and produce original work, the initiative fuels growth across Dubai's arts ecosystem and reinforces the emirate's status as a global hub of the creative economy. The course is delivered through immersive workshops in both Arabic and English. It welcomes UAE nationals and residents aged 18 or older—students, artists, filmmakers, designers and writers—who want to bring stories to life on screen. No prior experience is needed. House 436 in Al Shindagha Historical Neighbourhood will come alive with a month-long creative programme running from 18 August to 26 September 2025. Limited to just 10 participants, the programme offers an exclusive opportunity to meet three times a week under the guidance of director-artist Boubaker Boukhari, celebrated for his experimental, folklore‑infused stop‑motion techniques, in a setting designed to be both focused and highly interactive. Participants will explore every stage of the craft, moving from concept development and storyboarding through filming, editing, and finally strategies for distribution and festival submission. Practical workshops in character design, visual arts, and audio recording lead up to a public screening of their projects at the Sikka Art & Design Festival. Dubai Culture invites aspiring storytellers to apply by submitting short written responses explaining their motivation and interest in animation. Applications must be submitted via this link no later than 8 August. Candidates will be selected based on their demonstrated interest in animation and, where applicable, the submission of a CV or creative portfolio. Beyond technique, Harakat Sikka helps participants produce original shorts that reflect their ideas and identity. Trainees gain hands-on experience with filmmaking tools and learn how to prepare their work for local and international festivals. The initiative supports the Authority's mission to build sustainable talent development platforms, expand training pathways, and deepen community engagement with the arts—reinforcing Dubai's position as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.
