«Everything went downhill» : Moroccan footballer Ihattaren reflects on losing his father

Ya Biladi17-04-2025
In a rare emotional moment, Moroccan footballer Mohamed Ihattaren shared a personal story about his late father during an appearance on Matchday by Supergaande. The RKC Waalwijk player reflected on how his father's presence shaped his early career—and how his passing marked the start of a difficult period.
«When my dad was around, I could always say: my father's here. That gave me so much peace of mind—I could just focus and perform», Ihattaren said, offering a message to all footballing fathers. «You have to be present, no matter what. You have no idea how much that means to a boy».
He admitted the loss still weighs heavily. «When that was taken away from me, everything started to go downhill. Yeah, I still struggle with it», he said. Ihattaren described how his father was always in the crowd, standing with the fans behind the fences. «Everyone knew: that's my dad. That gave me such a boost. I used to think, I'm going to buy all of Morocco for you», he said with a heavy heart.
Today, he says, that motivation has shifted. «Now I feel that way about my mom. These past few years, I haven't given her what she deserves, because I wasn't in a good place. But now, she's my drive», he promised.
Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, to Moroccan parents, Mohamed Ihattaren currently plays as an attacking midfielder for RKC Waalwijk. A former PSV Eindhoven prodigy, he made his professional debut at 16. He later joined Juventus in 2021 but never played for them, with loan spells at Sampdoria and Ajax, followed by a brief stint at Slavia Prague. After personal struggles and a career downturn—compounded by allegations of ties to a Mocro Maffia member and accusations of domestic abuse—he returned to the Eredivisie in 2024, hoping to relaunch his career.

Hakimi's PSG Wins UEFA Super Cup

Rabat — Achraf Hakimi's Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) hopes to claim the UEFA Super Cup title came true tonight in Udine, Italy. Following a well-fought game, the Parisian club settled the game in penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw, ultimately winning 4-3 to claim the title. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring for Tottenham, putting Spurs ahead in the 39th minute after pouncing on a rebound in a crowded PSG box. Cristian Romero doubled the Premier League club's lead early in the second half with a powerful header, sealing a disciplined performance from the Europa League winners. Hakimi, starting at right-back, endured a subdued night. Tottenham's high prowess, pressing, and compact shape kept the Moroccan international pinned in defence, limiting his trademark overlapping runs. His contributions came largely in tracking runners and breaking up attacks, with little opportunity to influence play in the opponent's 18 square meters. Although PSG's manager Luis Enrique made changes with the hope of rewinding and finding their way to Tottenham's net, the Spurs kept the 0-2 draw unchanged for large spells of the game. It was not until minute 85 that Enrique's substitutes made a difference in the game. The Korean Lee Kang-in reached Vicario's net with an unstoppable strike, bringing life to the eyes of his teammates. Ten minutes later, and late in added time, PSG's Goncalo Ramos turned Osman Dembele's assist into an equalizer, scoring his club's second goal and proving that a game is never over until the final whistle. PSG's equalizer sent both clubs to the penalty kicks, where chance is as important as technical competence. With so many kicks wasted from both sides, the Parisian club was able to make the hopes come true with a penalty score of 4-3. Tottenham Hotspur's dream to claim its first-ever faded away tonight, left with a search for answers ahead of the new season. Tags: HakimiPSG vs TottenhamUEFA Super Cup

CAF Denounces Security Breaches During Kenya-Morocco CHAN 2024 Match

Marrakech – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed serious concerns about security failures at Kasarani Stadium during Kenya's matches in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), particularly following incidents that occurred during the Kenya-Morocco fixture on Sunday. In an official letter addressed to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Kenya, CAF condemned the persistent security breaches observed during matches involving the Kenyan national team. The continental governing body specifically referenced serious incidents that took place during the Kenya-Morocco match played on Sunday. Morocco began their quest for a third CHAN title with a solid 2-0 victory over Angola in the Group A opener at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on August 3. However, their momentum was halted by the defeat to Kenya a week later. Among the reported incidents were a broken access door, spectators entering without tickets, attendance exceeding the stadium's regulatory capacity of 48,000, and unauthorized entry into areas reserved for media. CAF has referred these security failures to the appropriate authorities for investigation and appropriate measures. The organization has also initiated discussions with the LOC and the Kenyan government to ensure strict compliance with CAF regulations, particularly those related to security protocols. The match, which Kenya won 1-0, took place in a tense atmosphere, raising questions about security management throughout the competition. Kasarani Stadium, where these events occurred, is scheduled to host the tournament final on August 30 in a competition co-organized by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. On the sporting front, Morocco suffered its first defeat in the tournament against host nation Kenya. The Atlas Lions now find themselves obligated to win their next two matches to qualify for the second round, starting with their upcoming fixture against Zambia on Thursday. Despite entering the tournament as favorites, coach Tarik Sektioui's team struggled to convert their technical superiority into goals. After a promising start in the first fifteen minutes, Morocco's momentum was disrupted when striker Ayoub Mouloua sustained an injury that forced his substitution. Kenya's Rayan Ogam capitalized on a defensive lapse to score with a powerful, well-placed shot in the 42nd minute, giving the home side the advantage. Kenya played most of the second half with ten men following Christine Erambo's logical expulsion for a bad foul just before halftime. Despite the numerical advantage and substitutions that reinvigorated their attack, Morocco failed to equalize. Saber Bougrine and Youssef Mehri provided fresh energy, but the Atlas Lions lacked precision in the final third. The Moroccan team will need to quickly regroup to avoid an early exit from the competition. Harakass Quits Wydad, Heads to Saudi Arabia

Wydad AC have confirmed the departure of defender Jamal Harakass to Saudi Pro League club Damac in the current summer transfer window. The Casablanca side brought an end to Harakass's spell at the club after head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem deemed he was surplus to requirements. The 29-year-old was placed on the club's exit list shortly after Wydad participated in the FIFA Club World Cup. Harakass has agreed terms with Damac and will join the Saudi outfit in what will be his first professional stint in the Kingdom. According to Saudi daily Asharq Al-Awsat , the transfer is worth around 6 million Moroccan dirhams ($600,000). Damac have moved to secure Harakass as a replacement for Algerian centre-back Farouk Chafai, whose contract was not renewed at the end of last season. A former player for Raja Casablanca and Mouloudia Oujda, Harakass has also featured for the Moroccan national team, earning four caps during the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and scoring once.
