Period drama fans have just days to watch 'emotional' film before it's axed

Daily Recorda day ago

The British biographical drama film stars Felicity Jones, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Tom Hollander
A highly praised period drama directed by and featuring Ralph Fiennes is ready to depart from BBC iPlayer soon.
The biographic film, The Invisible Woman (2013), is set in the Victorian era and centres around an important cultural figure.

Adapted from a 1990 novel bearing the same title, it unfolds the tale of Charles Dickens's clandestine affair with Nelly Ternan, played out over 13 years with a budding young actress.

Haunted by memories, an older Nelly, now a teacher and a wife, grapples with her concealed past involving the illustrious author, as flashbacks unravel their complex connection.
The movie delves into Charles Dickens's mental landscape, the societal dilemmas presented by their relationship, and Nelly's trials following their separation.
It provides insight into the difficulties faced by someone entangled with a renowned personality through the lens of Nelly, as the drama investigates themes of love, individuality, and the ramifications of keeping secrets, reports the Express.
Regarding his dual role as actor and director for the piece, Fiennes confessed his initial unfamiliarity with Charles Dickens' body of work to Vulture, stating: "I was ignorant.
"I had only read Little Dorrit. I knew his obvious ones - Nicholas Nickleby, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations - through adaptations. And Christmas Carol. I didn't know much about the man."

Nevertheless, Fiennes's portrayal earned widespread acclaim, with many reviews commending his and Felicity Jones's acting prowess.
The film has garnered a positive consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, where it boasts a rating of 76%, reflecting the viewers' commendations.
Critics have praised the film, with one saying: "This is everything a period drama almost never is: underplayed, witty, poignant and, above all, real". Another reviewer simply put: "Beautiful to watch. Acting perfect. Based on truth".

Other viewers have also shared their thoughts, with one commenting: "This is a slow and emotional watch, ideal for fans of period drama. I found it quite engrossing and intriguing to get to know Charles' love interest at the time its set."
The cast's performances have also been commended, with one viewer noting: "The cast do well giving good performances and the dialogue was quite thoughtful at times, although at other times it's more a case of what isn't said, than what is.
"And indeed I enjoyed the dialogue-free scenes as they had an almost dream-like quality to them and allowed the viewer to contemplate what the characters on screen may be thinking."
Upon its release in 2013, The Invisible Woman was not only well-received by critics but also achieved box office success, grossing £2,380,130.78 worldwide.
The Invisible Woman (2013) will no longer be available on BBC iPlayer after June 7.

Nadiya Hussain reveals the BBC has AXED her cooking show after a decade on screens - and swipes that TV industry 'doesn't always support Muslim women like me'

Nadiya Hussain has revealed that the BBC has cancelled her cooking show after ten years on our screens in a 'really difficult' blow. The 40 year old, who won the sixth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2015, opened up about the 'changes in her career' in a recent Instagram post. After winning the cooking programme, Nadiya bagged herself a number of television shows with the Beeb, including Nadiya's Asian Odyssey, Nadiya's Cook Once Eat Twice and Nadiya's Time to Eat. The series had different iterations which included others such as Nadiya's British Good Adventure and Nadiya's Fast Flavours. Hussain told her 950k followers: 'One huge change is that there will be no cookery show. 'There will be no more cookery show. The BBC have decided that they didn't want to commission the show. 'It was huge, I was already on this steady trajectory of change and I was thinking about where I wanted my career to go. Speaking about her experience in the industry, she added: 'And actually, it's really difficult as a Muslim woman. I work in an industry tat doesn't always support people like me or recognise my talent or my full potential. 'And as a lot gaslighting and making you feel like what's actually happening isn't happening. 'So for me it's been a huge, huge, huge change for me. But it's one that I am really excited about. 'One that I want to move in a positive direction and ultimately I want to work with people who believe in voices of people like me.' She captioned the post: 'Just a hello from me! 'Thank you to everyone for being on this journey with me, and I hope you can continue to stay on this journey with me. 'It wouldn't be what ibe is if it were not for you guys. #newbeginnings #allmylove #changes.' Town treated to free chips with a twist powered by an electric car

In the aptly named Kent town of Deal, National Fish and Chip Day was celebrated with 300 portions of chips given away, as well as a limited run of battered fish. But it wasn't your ordinary chip shop, with the chippy being powered by two electric cars and fronted by TikTok's 'Chip Shop Diva', Destiny Harold. The Dacia Spring, which its makers say is the cheapest electric vehicle currently on the market, was the power behind the frying, in partnership with local chippy, The Blue Mermaid Fish Bar. It comes after a poll of 2,000 adults found fish and chips is the most popular treat on a British holiday, as well as cream tea and hot doughnuts. Others to feature in the top 20 list include Mr Whippy ice cream, Cornish pasties and mussels. Quintessentially British foods, such as fish finger sandwiches, strawberries and cream and a pie and mash also featured in the ranking. A spokesperson for car brand Dacia said: 'It was fun treating passers-by today and showing the power of our electric car, Spring, using its vehicle to load technology, which allows you to power external devices off the car's battery. 'It's no surprise we have a national day dedicated to the iconic meal that is fish and chips and the study shows just how much we love it and associate it with holidays by the seaside. 'Playing on the phrase 'cheap as chips' in line with our affordable car and being in the appropriately named Deal, was a great way to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day.' The research also found 41 per cent of adults describe such foods as nostalgic, while 45 per cent feel satisfied after eating them. When ordering a classic fish and chips, cod (48 per cent) and haddock (19 per cent) were the most popular choices, but 69 per cent simply order a portion of chips. It also emerged 44 per cent believe fish and chips is the 'food of the people' and 39 per cent said class doesn't impact how people eat it. While 46 per cent feel there is something nostalgic about eating the British staple with a wooden fork, which 33 per cent typically do, although 38 per cent opt to eat it by hand. Food psychologist, James Cornish, said: 'There are few things that unite the British public quite like fish and chips. 'Golden, salty, comforting, and steeped in history, this timeless dish is more than a meal - it's a national treasure. 'Loved across generations, social classes, and regions, it's one of those rare things that truly brings us together. 'There's a certain kind of magic in fish and chips - a simple meal that somehow carries the weight of memory, comfort, and delight. 'Maybe it's because we don't expect too much from humble food, but our delight is excelled through the delivering of more than we expected.'
