Donald Trump imposes 50 percent tariff on India's close ally, Tariff to take effect from THIS date, US president says…

US President Donald Trump Washington: The United States President Donald Trump has announced a 50 percent tariff on Brazil, the founding member of BRICS. Trump also critised the ongoing trial against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and termed it a witch hunt and an international disgrace. The US president, in a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said that the trial should not be taking place. He also stated that Washington would begin investigating Brazil's trade practices. Jair Bolsonaro, the former Brazilian president is facing criminal charges for allegedly plotting a coup d'etat. In the letter, Trump wrote, 'The way Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro during and after his term is an international disgrace. This trial should not be happening. It is a witch hunt that must be stopped immediately.' Trump said that he knows former Brazilian President Bolsonaro and has worked with him. He added that he held great respect for Bolsonaro, and that many other world leaders viewed him similarly during his tenure. Brazil Doing Terrible Thing: US President Donald Trump 'Brazil is doing a terrible thing on their treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro,' Trump said. 'I have watched, as has the World, as they have done nothing but come after him, day after day, night after night, month after month, year after year! He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE.' Trump went on to compare his own legal troubles to Bolsonaro's. Both leaders have been accused of trying to undermine their country's elections, following losses. Brazil had already voiced its discontent earlier It is important to note that Donald Trump's latest tariff threat comes soon after Brazil announced that it had summoned the US chargé d'affaires over a diplomatic dispute stemming from Trump's earlier criticism of the trial against Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is accused of orchestrating a coup attempt to overthrow Lula, a plot that ultimately failed due to lack of support from the military. He has denied all such allegations. Tariff on Brazil to Take Effect from August 1 In a letter, Donald Trump has informed that a 50 percent US tariff on Brazilian goods will take effect from August 1. This aligns with the deadline faced by dozens of other economies. Trump has begun sending letters to trade partners this week as he increases pressure for more deals, but he has focused on those partners with whom the US has a significant trade deficit.

US vs Brazil: Trump slaps 50% tariff; President Lula hits back, says 'will not accept tutelage'

NEW DELHI: Brazil on Thursday warned of retaliation after US President Donald Trump announced a steep 50 percent tariff on copper imports from the South American country. The move, widely seen as linked to Trump's backing of coup-accused former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, prompted a response from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. 'Any unilateral tariff increases will be addressed in light of the Brazilian Law of Economic Reciprocity,' Lula posted on X, as diplomatic tensions between the two nations deepened. The announcement came just hours after Brazil summoned the US ambassador in Brasilia to protest a statement by the American embassy referring to Bolsonaro as a victim of 'political persecution.' Bolsonaro is currently on trial for allegedly plotting to cling to power after losing the 2022 election to Lula. Donald Trump, who has openly aligned himself with Bolsonaro, reiterated his support in a social media post earlier this week, writing: 'LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE. They have done nothing but come after him, day after day, night after night, month after month, year after year!' Lula responded, calling the remarks an unacceptable interference. 'No one is above the law,' he said. The copper tariff, effective August 1, was announced through Trump's Truth Social platform. He called it part of a broader effort to revive the US copper industry, linking it directly to national security. 'Copper is necessary for Semiconductors, Aircraft, Ships, Ammunition, Data Centers, Lithium-ion Batteries, Radar Systems, Missile Defense Systems, and even, Hypersonic Weapons, of which we are building many,' he said. 'Copper is the second most used material by the Department of Defense!' He blamed previous US administrations for the decline in the domestic copper sector, describing them as 'foolish (and SLEEPY!)' and accused the Biden administration of 'thoughtless behaviour and stupidity.' Trump claimed the new tariff would not only rebuild the industry but also increase government revenues, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying the administration had already collected $100 billion through tariffs and aimed to reach $300 billion by year-end. In a letter addressed to Lula, Trump called Bolsonaro's prosecution an 'international disgrace' and warned that retaliatory action by Brazil could trigger further trade measures. He also announced a review of Brazil's trade practices. Although Trump has recently issued tariff threats to several trading partners, Brazil had so far not been on the list. It is currently the second-largest steel exporter to the US after Canada. The diplomatic spat also spilled over into the BRICS summit, hosted by Lula in Brazil this week. BRICS members criticised the US over new tariffs and Trump's military actions in Iran. In response, Trump threatened an additional 10 percent tariff on each BRICS-aligned nation, accusing them of launching 'insidious attacks on Free Elections.' On Wednesday, the US embassy in Brasilia doubled down on its support for Bolsonaro, stating: 'Jair Bolsonaro and his family have been strong partners of the United States. The political persecution against him, his family, and his followers is shameful and disrespects Brazil's democratic traditions.' Bolsonaro, who is barred from running in upcoming elections due to spreading disinformation about Brazil's voting system, thanked Trump for defending 'peace, justice and liberty.' Trump, in turn, suggested Bolsonaro remains the frontrunner for the presidency, despite the ban. With both leaders facing similar legal and political scrutiny, the row is drawing international attention as the narratives around Bolsonaro and Trump continue to mirror each other.
