45 suspected illegal immigrants detained in Bareilly, 1000 screened
Acting on the directives of the state government, a comprehensive campaign targeting illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants has been launched across Bareilly district.
As part of the ongoing 15-day operation, law enforcement agencies have deployed 58 dedicated teams to conduct intensive verification drives across various localities, particularly those housing temporary settlements.
Within just two days of the drive commencement, Bareilly Police have identified and detained 45 suspected infiltrators. According to officials, nearly 1,000 individuals have been screened at over 100 locations. The crackdown focuses on areas where people are living in shanties, tents, and other makeshift dwellings.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Anurag Arya stated that all identified suspects will undergo a thorough citizenship verification process. Those confirmed as illegal residents will be shifted to designated detention centres, following which their deportation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Preliminary data from the campaign reveals that the highest number of infiltrators were found in Bhojipura, where 11 individuals were detained. Other areas with notable detections include Shishgarh (8), Bhamora (5), Deorania (4), Shergarh (4), Baheri (3), Faridpur (2), and Visharatganj (1).
'These individuals were residing in temporary settlements scattered across police station jurisdictions. Our teams are visiting these locations during both morning and evening hours to ensure no illegal resident goes unchecked,' SSP Arya stated.
Special teams have been constituted at every police station in the district, with detailed briefings provided to ensure a coordinated and efficient operation. The campaign is being closely monitored by additional superintendents of police (ASPs) and circle officers (COs), signaling the administration's firm resolve to address the issue.
'This is the first time such a strict and systematic effort is being undertaken in Bareilly against Rohingya and Bangladeshi infiltrators,' SSP Arya added. 'We will not tolerate the illegal stay of such individuals under any circumstances. Those especially living in tents and shanties will be identified, verified, and action against them will be completed within the stipulated time.'

13 Bangladeshis with ‘suspected political links' held in West Tripura
Thirteen Bangladeshi citizens, including two women, were detained from Hapania on the outskirts of Agartala in West Tripura district on the suspicion that they had entered India illegally, police said on Wednesday. After a long interrogation by police and security agencies, they were handed over to the mobile task force. In the preliminary probe, it was found that they had crossed the international border illegally via Raishyabari in Dhalai district. Some of the male Bangladeshis had bandages on their legs. According to sources, they were suspected to have connections with the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), a political group in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts. They allegedly travelled more than 170 km from the border to get medical treatment in Agartala. However, there is no official statement about their political identity. In January, the police arrested a Bangladeshi national in possession of illegal firearms, ammunition, and Indian and Bengali currency notes from the Milanchakra area of the Tripura capital. Tripura shares an 856-km-long border with Bangladesh, much of which is covered with barbed-wire fences, except for a few patches.

Contribute now New Delhi: The Union government announced on Wednesday (June 4) that the population census along with the enumeration of castes will be conducted in two phases starting October 1, 2026. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a statement said that the reference date for the population census will be 12 am on March 1, 2027, while for the Union territory of Ladakh and the non-synchronous snow-bound areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 12 am October 1, 2026. This will be the first time that the population census will be conducted after a gap of 15 years. The last population census was conducted in 2011, with the exercise in 2021 delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 'All the preparations for the first phase of the Census to be conducted in 2021 were completed and field work was scheduled to begin in some States/UTs from April 1, 2020. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the census work was postponed,' the MHA statement said. Opposition questions delay Opposition parties have questioned the government's move to delay the population census further by announcing its commencement in October 2026. 'There is really no reason to delay the Census that was due in 2021 for another 23 months. The Modi Govt is capable only of generating headlines, not meeting deadlines,' said Congress MP Jairam Ramesh. Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin said that the BJP's move to delay the census to 2027 (when it will be conducted in most of India) makes clear its plan to reduce Tamil Nadu's parliamentary representation. 'The Indian constitution mandates that #delimitation must follow the first Census after 2026. While announcing the cabinet's decision on April 20, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said that the move demonstrated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to the values and interests of the society and country. He had accused the INDIA bloc of using the caste census as a 'political tool' and said that Congress governments have 'always opposed caste census'. However, the Union government's decision was a sharp reversal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s stance in the 2024 election campaign, when it had dismissed the demand for a caste census as a move to divide society. Samajwadi Party chief and Lok Sabha MP Akhilesh Yadav tied it to the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections due in 2027. 'Meaning, when PDA government comes to power in UP, only then will the caste census begin,' he said referring to his 'Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak' plank introduced during the 2024 elections.
