Durban's Luke Thompson realises dream with Ballito Pro victory

Durbanite Luke Thompson fulfilled a childhood dream by winning the prestigious Ballito Pro Challenger Series event, held from 22 June and concluding this past weekend.
The 21-year-old, who took up surfing at the age of 10, said it was only after progressing through the heat stages that he truly began to believe he could go all the way.
'The entire beach was going mad,' he said. 'It was definitely the proudest moment of my life so far.'
After three years of hard work and relentless training to compete on the Challenger Series, Thompson finally captured his first tour win — and did so on home soil. The Ballito Pro is regarded as the world's oldest and longest-running professional surf event.

With his maiden Challenger Series victory now under his belt, Thompson is aiming for a top ten finish in the global standings. The World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series draws elite talent from Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, Tahiti Nui, North America and South America, all vying for international recognition and future qualification for the Championship Tour.
Thompson's standout performance at Ballito marks a significant turning point in his young career and is likely to attract attention from global sponsors and brands.
'This was my first win on the Challenger Series — in fact, it was my first time even making the final,' he said. 'I've been competing at this event for three years but never made it past the round of 16. It's always been a dream of mine to win here because I basically grew up surfing this beach.

Tahiti's Olympic surfing gold medallist Kauli Vaast was among the standouts on Thursday as the Lexus Tahiti Pro got under way in huge, perfect waves at his home break of Teahupo'o, with California's Griffin Colapinto also starring in the heavy tubes. The venue for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Teahupo'o again delivered stellar conditions for the world's top surfers in the final event of the regular season. The top five men and women surfers at season's end win a spot in the World Surf League's one-day, winner-takes-all Finals in Fiji later this month. Vaast, who competes on the second-tier challenger series, was given a wild card and consistently found himself on the heaviest waves, racking up a two-wave total of 16.30 out of a possible 20. 'I really want to win here,' said Vaast, who made the final of the championship tour event in 2022. 'I have a second place to better. I'm surrounded by great people ... they cheer for me and I'm really proud they are here and I want to do good for them again.' Brazil's Tokyo Olympic gold medallist and reigning Tahiti Pro champion Italo Ferreira was another standout in the first heat of the morning, but it was Colapinto who finished with the highest heat score of the day with 18 points for two long, deep tubes.

Promising growth for Kingsway's hockey girls
LOCAL hockey girls of Kingsway High School (KHS) made history at the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls' Hockey Challenge on July 26 and 27 at St Mary's DSG in Kloof, when they made their debut appearance, going toe-to-toe with hockey giants from across the province. Also read: Cross-country action in Amanzimtoti For the first time in 15 years the KHS first team reached the regional finals. While they did not get far in the grand finals of the star-studded hockey championship, their prowess and sportsmanship made a powerful step forward for the school's hockey legacy. 'They may not have brought home the trophy, but they brought heart, grit, and a new legacy to Kingsway hockey,' said coach Anthony Haiden. SPAR publicist Sophie Thompson said they did incredibly well to place ninth overall in KZN. 'In their opening game they took on Epworth School from Pietermaritzburg, notching up their first defeat, going down by a handful of goals. KHS, unable to find their feet, lost 0-4 to Ferrum High School. Their third big game was against the defending champions, St Mary's DSG, who were on the prowl for their seventh victory. St Mary's didn't spare any might, claiming a convincing 7-0 win. St Mary's DSG did in fact go on to defend their title,' said Thompson. The final pool game played under floodlights was against St Patrick's College from Kokstad and Kingsway lost by one goal. Thompson added that throughout their games, the Amanzimtoti team played with grace and great spirits. Also read: South Coast Sun 01 August 2025 Kingsway finished fifth on the log and on Sunday took on Wartburg Kirchdorf School. At the end of the positional game, the score was 0-0. The conclusion of the game moved to a round of eight seconds penalty shootout. 'Leading by example, captain, Keiyona Achary netted Kingsway's all-important goal in the penalty shootout. Having gone first, Wartburg's three attempts didn't pass Kingsway's goalkeeper, Nosipho Mhlongo. Kingsway's first attempt didn't find the back of the goals, but Keiyona slotting in her attempt claimed ninth place for her team,' said Thompson. After the tournament, Keiyona said that the weekend was a mix of highs and lows, but overall a great experience. 'Things didn't go exactly according to plan, we had hoped for a few better results, but we learnt a lot along the way. Playing against the top schools was definitely tough. You can see why they're known as the big names in school hockey. Their structure, speed, and skill really test you. But at the same time, it pushed us to raise our game and take note of ways to improve our hockey. I think we had some strong moments, and it was inspiring to see how far we've come as a team. Winning winter break for Ashton sports teams
Ashton International College Ballito's senior college stars enjoyed a successful school holiday sports campaign. While most people were enjoying the Ballito Pro or away in the Midlands and Drakensberg, Ashton's youngsters were participating across KZN at various winter festivals. There were provincial caps and awards handed out too – read on for a snapshot of the school's recent sports activities. The Ashton girls' 1st football team competed at the Kearsney Festival and won the Plate Final after beating Trinity House 3-0 in the Plate final at the Kearsney Festival last weekend. Kitari van Straaten and Nonkosi Xaba were selected for the Girls' Tournament XI. Hockey stars Jaiden Krambeck and Kaiden Webster were part of the 16-man KZN squad – coached by Ashton 1st team head coach, Keegan Gibbon – which achieved bronze at the 2025 Regional Inter-Provincial Tournament at Michaelhouse. Sasha-Lee Smaldon and Madison Uys – captain and vice-captain of the U19 iLembe Netball team – finished third in the Telkom Netball League. Jared Scheepers represented the Sharks XV at the Reitz VKB U19 Week and was selected as the 'Best Lock'. Jessica Kock (Form 3) and her doubles partner Courtney Kemp were runners up in the girls doubles final at the recent American Express Super 8 KwaZulu-Natal tennis tournament. Emmerson van Zijl was part of the U16A girls' KZN Coastals team that went undefeated and clinched the national title at Hilton College, beating Eastern Province 4–2 in the final.
