Pedro Pascal Dramatically Yanked Joaquin Phoenix's Arm Down On A Cannes Red Carpet, And People Think They Know The Sad Reason Why
In case you missed it, Cannes Film Festival kicked off last week, and Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix's latest movie, Eddington, premiered to a five-minute standing ovation on Saturday.
But internet sleuths are more interested in what happened on the red carpet before the screening, with Pedro being filmed dramatically yanking down his co-star's arm as he waved to fans.
In the footage, Joaquin can be seen waving directly in front of him, but then straightens his arm out as he turns to the side. Pedro grabs Joaquin's arm and pushes it down.

Joaquin looks flustered as Pedro says something indecipherable to him — and then seemingly mutters 'oh my god' to himself before going back to posing for the waiting paparazzi.
After the video emerged online, some began to speculate that Pedro was stopping his friend from being photographed inadvertently performing a Nazi salute. This is defined as a salute where the arm is inclined upwards with the hand open and palm down.
It's worth noting that Joaquin was waving with his left arm at the time, but there is no doubt that an unfortunately-timed photo would not have looked too great for him.
One person shared the video to a pop culture Reddit forum with the headline: 'Pedro Pascal pulled down Joaquin Phoenix's arm before an accidental salute,' and it certainly sparked conversation. In fact, at the time of writing, the thread has over 68k upvotes and more than 2000 comments.
Many agreed with the OP and expressed how sad it is that this is something a famous person has to consider when out and about. One popular comment reads: 'What a time to be alive. JFC that Pedro even had to consider this. And Joaquin obviously immediately understood. Fuck.''The alt-right has spent YEARS taking stills from videos of people waving to pretend they were giving nazi salutes,' somebody else explained, while another added: 'It started as a wave, but he was unknowingly edging towards it straightening out and moving upwards. And I don't think that's a gesture you want to be photographed making.'
"You can see how innocent the move actually is by the look on Joaquin's face, and also how quickly he understands the point,' one more insisted. What a sad time we live in.'
'I feel like this is pretty clearly a wave and not a salute,' another argued, before reading the rest of the comments and adding: 'Edit: you guys are right, I didn't consider photos, and the current right-wing gotcha moment since Elon [Musk]'s salute.'
'this seems unnecessary and weird to me,' somebody else wrote, to which another corrected: 'It's necessary and weird. That's the problem.'
While this theory does appear to be pretty popular, not everybody was convinced that this is what was going on in the video.
'I have no idea why Pedro pulled his arm down but it definitely wasn't because he thought Joaquin was saluting,' one cynic wrote. Another added: 'He was clearly waving. People these days. Smh.'
'Reads to me more like an exaggerated goof between them, especially with Phoenix's reaction,' somebody else wrote.

It's one of the most indelible scenes in all of Italian cinema. In Michelangelo Antonioni's L'Avventura (1960), the actress Monica Vitti walks pensively down the streets of Noto, Sicily, as more and more men gaze in her direction. Like much of the rest of the film—about a woman who goes missing on a remote Italian island—the moment has been endlessly scrutinized for its striking imagery and subtext. The White Lotus even replicated it, shot for shot, during Season 2, with Aubrey Plaza standing in for Vitti—a performer widely regarded in her native country as the 'Queen of Italian Cinema.' 'She was the type of artist and icon that comes once in a lifetime,' her nephew Giorgio Ceciarelli tells Vogue of Vitti, who died at the age of 90 in 2022. 'It's a proud legacy we always took for granted, but as we grew up, we realized she's a national treasure.' Monica Vitti and Michelangelo Antonioni at the Cannes Film Festival in 1960. Throughout her multi-decade career, Vitti staked a claim as one of Italy's most luminous and beloved cinematic exports, alongside the likes of Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Antonioni, and Federico Fellini—all of whom shot to global prominence in the 1950s. Born in Rome in 1931, Vitti was both a striking beauty and a true artist. She became Antonioni's muse (and, for a time, his lover), also working with him on such atmospheric classics as 1961's La Notte, with Mastroianni and the French actress Jeanne Moreau, and 1964's Il Deserto Rosso (Red Desert). The range of her talent is currently on display in Monica Vitti: La Modernista (June 6–19), a 14-film series at Film at Lincoln Center co-organized with the storied Italian film house Cinecittà. It marks Vitti's first-ever American retrospective. 'She transcends time,' says Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of Cinecittà. 'She is truly modern because you can't pin her down to a fixed, predictable—even if beautiful—type; Vitti instead represents change. And this applies not just to her films, but to her way of being a woman. In this sense, she embodied the changes of an entire country and remains relevant across genres and decades.' Vitti's legacy as a fashion icon may be just as robust as her impact on cinema. A 1966 profile in American Vogue described her much-mimicked, intriguingly 'international' mien, characterized by a 'definite, wiry quality which could be American, but a pink-and-white complexion and clear amber eyes which look as though English mists and Devonshire cream have been at work. On the other hand, that artfully disarranged hair'—a point of reference even now—'and a smart Italian cachet could only come out of post–World War II Rome.'

How an Auschwitz Prisoner Saved the Lives of Twins Targeted for Nazi Medical Experiments
Eighty years after the liberation of Auschwitz, Nazi Germany's biggest killing center, a new documentary screening on June 6 focuses on a 29-year-old prisoner who cared for young twins who were subjected to Nazi medical experiments—giving them hope in a situation that seemed completely hopeless. Narrated by Liev Schrieber, The Last Twins starts screening on June 6 at the Quad Cinema in Manhattan. The documentary marking a grim milestone in World War II history happens to be on the 81st anniversary of D-Day, a turning point in the Allied forces' road to victory. The documentary features survivors who sing the praises of their guardian angel Erno 'Zvi' Spiegel, a Hungarian Jewish prisoner ordered to look after them. Spiegel's daughter, Judith Richter, also speaks in the film about the present-day lessons from her father's courageous acts. Here's what we know about the medical experiments on twins in Auschwitz and how The Last Twins tells Zvi's story. Why did Auschwitz conduct experiments on twins? Nicknamed 'the angel of death,' Josef Mengele was 'the most notorious of the Nazi doctors,' as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum puts it. Mengele sought out twins who arrived at Auschwitz in order to subject them to medical experiments. Spiegel, a twin, was separated from his twin sister Magda, and at Auschwitz, Mengele tasked him with looking after a group of male twins and escorting them to Mengele's office for experiments. It's unclear exactly what kinds of medical experiments were performed on these boys. 'There's very little evidence of exactly what was done,' says David Marwell, author of Mengele: Unmasking the Angel of Death, who did not work on the documentary. The survivors in The Last Twins are among the few left. Many of the twins who were subjected to the experiments did not live to talk about it. The twin prisoners in Auschwitz did not give their consent, and the experiments were not conducted by scientific research standards. If a twin died during one of the experiments, Mengele ordered the surviving twin be executed so their bodies could be autopsied and compared. Twins may have been saved from death by the gas chamber, but many who survived the experiments ended up permanently maimed. One survivor, Ephraim Reichenberg, who appears in the doc describes how he and his brother were subjected to injections in the neck. His brother was discovered to have a beautiful singing voice, but he did not have one, and the Nazis focused experiments on their necks. A year after the war, his brother died a painful death, and in 1967, Ephraim's throat and gullet were removed. He speaks in the documentary with a voice amplifier. Spiegel, he says, 'gathered all of the young children around him and took care of them, taught them, and watched over them.' How Spiegel helped the twins While Spiegel couldn't stop the experiments, he did his best to keep the boys alive. In a place where prisoners were known by numbers tattooed to their arms, he made sure the boys called each other by their real names. If one boy found a piece of food, then he had the youngster share it with the rest of his peers so everyone could enjoy some of it. He even taught them math, history, and geography in the barracks. 'He was a father figure to us,' says survivor Tom Simon. 'We had no father there.' The documentary also features a man that Spiegel snuck in as a twin to save their lives. Gyorgy Kun says he and his brother were directed to the twin medical experiments, even though they weren't actually twins. Instead of turning them away, Spiegel changed the birthdates for the Kun brothers so that, on paper, it looked like they were born on the same day, and therefore they wouldn't be sent to the gas chambers. Mengele was never prosecuted for his crimes and lived in fear that authorities would come after him. Marwell says he didn't find 'any specific evidence that he was in any way remorseful.' Mengele fled to Brazil after the war. TIME's 1985 obituary called him "the most hated man in the world." After Auschwitz was liberated, Spiegel moved to the Czech city of Karlovy Vary and lived near his twin sister Magda, who also survived Auschwitz. He got married, had a child, and immigrated to Israel in 1949. LIFE magazine featured him in a 1981 article about Mengele, and surviving twins started to reach out to him. He always took their calls. He died in 1993 at the age of 78. Richter says her father used to tell his children that Nazis 'could take away your family, your house, everything, but they would never be able to take what you have learned and your knowledge.' She cites Spiegel as a reason why she pursued a career in academia and set up a program that schools young people in the basics of medicine. Now she is the co-founder and active chairperson of Medinol, a medical device company, focusing on ethical forms of medical treatment, in stark contrast to the unethical medical treatments that her father saw in Auschwitz. She hopes viewers will inspire them to act and help others. 'One person matters,' she says, explaining that she hopes that her father's story will empower people to be courageous in dark times. 'This film is not just a Holocaust film. It's a universal story about the human spirit triumphing over evil. It's a story of resilience…not just of surviving, but protecting others.'
