Sotheby's to auction Jane Birkin's original Hermès bag

Yahoo06-06-2025
(NewsNation) — The original Hermès Birkin bag, a prototype made for actress and singer Jane Birkin, is going up for auction this summer.
The bag will be part of Sotheby's 'Paris Fashion Icons' sale taking place July 10. It will be on view at Sotheby's in Manhattan from June 6 to 10, and then on display at Sotheby's Galleries in Paris from July 3 to 9.

The Birkin bag's origin story comes from a conversation between Birkin and then-Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight. Birkin complained that she could not find a bag big enough to fit all the things she needed throughout the day, and the two began to sketch out ideas on a sick bag on the plane.
Dumas created the bag for her, and in 1985, Hermès offered the Birkin bag to her and asked for permission to name it after her.
'There is no doubt that the original Birkin bag is a true one-of-a-kind — a singular piece of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon that signals luxury in the most refined way possible,' Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's global head of handbags and fashion, said in a statement.

Tracee Ellis Ross Calls Out Barack Obama for Friendship Mistake: ‘You Failed As a Friend'

Tracee Ellis Ross thinks former President Barack Obama owes her an apology. 'I broke up with someone, and I remember running into the former president and he was like, 'I could have told you that,'' Ross, 52, recalled during a Thursday, August 14, appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. 'And I was like, 'Well, you failed as a friend!' Like, it was your job to say that before, you know what I mean?' she continued. 'Like, nip it in the bud.' Ross also revealed that despite their close friendship, she's never asked Barack or his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, to set her up on a date. 'I've never asked Michelle to set me up, which I think perhaps is dumb and I need to get on that,' she joked. Travis Kelce Says He Owes Erin Andrews 'Big Time' for Telling Taylor Swift to Give Him a Chance Ross also discussed her romantic life when she appeared on Michelle Obama's 'IMO' podcast in April 2025. She admitted to Michelle and her brother Craig Robinson that she usually dates younger men for one key reason. 'A lot of men my age are steeped in a toxic masculinity and have been raised in a culture where there is a particular way that a relationship looks,' Ross explained. 'Anything that starts to smell of that for me — I did enough of it where I was controlled and felt like I was a possession or a prize — I just have no interest in it. And I will not do it again.' Ross also said that she's just no longer interested in expecting men her age to behave appropriately. 'I have long been past the age where I feel like it's my job to teach somebody or grow them up,' she concluded. Though she's been open about being interested in having a romantic partner, Ross has also made no secret of the fact that she leads a full, dynamic life all on her own. She frequently travels (and looks amazing while doing so), something that is highlighted in her 2025 series Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross. The series debuted on July 25, 2025, and is available for free on the Roku channel. In an interview with the New York Times published the same day, Ross explained that she doesn't offer travel tips. 'I don't believe in advice. I offer experience and hope. And this is my version. My transparency is about how I can give you a jumping-off point,' she said. 'I say this in the Mexico episode: There's got to be something between cat ladies and Joan of Arc. You know what I mean?' Drew Barrymore Says Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce Inspired Her to Start Dating Again — And It Worked! She added, 'Like, I really wish I had some other pictures on the wall culturally and historically that would show me what it means to push up against the cultural norm and choose yourself — of the revolutionary act of joy, particularly for a Black woman, and of having the agency and the freedom to make choices that work for you, whether you have a partner or not.' How Kaylee Gonclaves' Brother Found Love After Sister's Murder

Originally appeared on E! Online Steven Goncalves is leaning on someone special. Nearly one month after Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder of Kaylee Goncalves and her three friends, her brother shared that he and Olivia Vitale—the reporter he met during the investigation—are now engaged. "I interviewed Steven's family," Olivia detailed to NewsNation's Banfield Aug. 18. "This was when Bryan was still not arrested yet." The independent journalist noted that Steve Goncalves—Steven and Kaylee's dad—and his wife Kristi Goncalves learned about her TikTok, which has amassed over 1.3 million followers, through their daughter and reached out to her through email. "Several days before she had passed, she had sent my page to Kristi and was talking about it," Olivia explained. "So they wanted to reach out and do a documentary with me." However, she didn't meet Steven until a year later while she was filming the demolition of the house on King Road, where Kaylee, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin had been murdered. "But we didn't start dating until almost even a year after that. We were friends first, and then I invited him to—I was filming a documentary with NBC—and I wanted Steven to be a part of it, and it was on set where we bonded." It was this January, while filming the project, that the documentarian and Steven got to know each other. "We were skipping rocks," she recalled. "That was really when we first really met, and we just became best friends after that. And it's history." For Steven, his relationship has been the silver lining of their family's tragic few years. "There is a bright spot," he told host Brian Entin. "I did meet Olivia. I do have my partner for the rest of my life and I'll hold on to that." As for what their future looks like? While Olivia is still interested in sharing compelling stories to help other families, she and Steven have been interested in putting down roots. "Eventually, we would like to homestead, get some chickens, raise a family together," she explained. "I probably won't have as much time to be on the road and I'll be more working for home. But we'll do some stories together and help other families, 'cause that's what it really boils down—helping other people and giving them a voice." Emma Heming Willis opens up about Bruce Willis' dementia diagnosis

Actor Bruce Willis' wife, Emma Heming Willis, is opening up for the first time about the actor's dementia diagnosis. 'I was so panicked, and I just remember hearing it and just not hearing anything else,' Heming Willis told Diane Sawyer about the 'Die Hard' actor developing frontotemporal dementia. The diagnosis forced Willis to retire from acting in 2023. Emma Heming Willis' 'journey' to being Bruce Willis' caretaker Her interview with Sawyer comes ahead of her new book, ' The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, ' which will release Sept. 9. The book is described as 'for anyone caregiving for a loved one with any form of dementia, and even for those caregiving for other conditions. … 'The Unexpected Journey' shows that you are not alone.'
