Scots vampire TikToker's goth alter ego 'helped her confidence after motherhood'
A young stay-at-home mum who presents as a vampire in her spare time, wearing corsets and fake fangs and filming in graveyards, has said this alter ego allows her to be 'more confident'.
Kat, 22, who is originally from Poland but now lives in West Lothian shares videos of her vampire alter ego 'Katarina' with her 14,000 TikTok followers under the handle @zokatsen.
Having been bullied as a child for being 'weird' and 'different', Kat says her online alter ego has helped her find her identity after feeling 'lost' in early motherhood.
She takes inspiration from Victorian-era fabrics, pairing black and red silk or lace with white linen and cotton pieces that feature Romantic details like flouncy sleeves, layering them with gothic-inspired jewellery adorned with bat motifs.
Despite receiving hate online and 'strange looks' in public for her appearance, Kat, who does not wish to disclose her surname for privacy reasons, has found a community of fellow goths and aims to inspire other mothers to pursue their passions.
Her dream would be for her online persona to lead to paid acting roles, and she will be going into her second year studying creative writing at university from September 2025.
'Even though Katarina is a character, she and I are two sides of the same coin,' Kat told PA Real Life.
'She allows me to be more confident, more outwardly somebody that maybe I don't feel so confident being in my own life.'
After moving to Scotland from Poland aged two-and-a-half, Kat's journey into the gothic subculture began in childhood, with a love of the film The Corpse Bride and the musical The Phantom Of The Opera.
At school, Kat said she was verbally and physically bullied by other girls for being 'outspoken', as well as for her Minecraft YouTube channel – her first foray into content creation.

'Throughout my childhood, there was definitely a pattern of me being considered weird and different, and people trying to stamp that out,' Kat said.
'In high school, that's when the more physical stuff started – pulling hair, standing on my shoes, walking behind me, following me, and then your usual yelling out abuse.'
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Kat began experimenting with her appearance, starting with dramatic eyeliner.
Her go-to products include Revolution SFX white base, NYX eyeshadow and Rimmel eyeliner – but she focuses on budget-friendly choices.
'I love Vinted – just these random gems that you find,' she said.
'I also try to alter any clothing that I maybe don't like any more, but I could make something else out of it.'
Kat's daughter, who she wishes to keep anonymous, was born in May 2023, and she initially threw herself into motherhood, sidelining other parts of her identity.
'For a long time, I felt really lost in myself, and I didn't really know how to express myself properly, or how to separate me from the mum that I had become,' she said.
'I felt like I had to completely lock away any of my desires, any of my needs, and just put my daughter first, because if I didn't do that, I wouldn't have been able to cope.'
Kat said she was still in a relationship with her daughter's father at the time, but they have since broken up.
She said she knows any future partner would need to support her alternative lifestyle.
'I probably would want to date somebody that is also in the subculture, maybe somebody that has also experienced being shunned for what they really enjoyed doing,' she said.
'Just because I wouldn't be able to be with someone that I didn't really relate to in that way, and I wouldn't want to dampen my own personality and how outwardly myself I have become.'
It is at night – when vampires typically prowl – that Kat finds time to create her TikTok content.
'Since I've been a teenager, I find it a lot easier to function at night,' Kat said.
She creates videos in which her comedic vampire persona Katarina 'navigates the world of human alternative culture'.
In one of her most popular videos, which has more than 340,000 views, Katarina visited Frankenstein's Bar in Edinburgh, acting confused by modern human customs.
She also films in graveyards, spaces Kat says she has always found 'peaceful'.
While Kat does occasionally use fake fangs in her videos, she uses special effects to edit red eyes in after recording, as she 'struggles' with contact lenses, and this also saves time as a busy mum.
Kat draws on her childhood experience as a youth theatre member to bring Katarina to life.
She also takes inspiration from vampire-themed media including Netflix's animated series Castlevania, and comedy mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows – with TikTokers drawing comparisons between her and Natasia Demetriou's character, Nadja.
'Katarina says that Nadja is one of her best friends from the United States, so they're kind of spiritual sisters in that sense,' explained Kat.
Out of some of the more mainstream vampire series, Kat prefers The Vampire Diaries to the Twilight franchise.
'I watched The Vampire Diaries when I was younger, and I really enjoyed that,' said Kat.
'However, Katarina would hate Twilight because she thinks that it is a completely inaccurate representation of vampires and that it spreads a lot of misconceptions about her kind.'
She added: 'I really enjoy acting. That love for theatre has stuck with me – it's a core part of who I am.
'Even though I'm playing a character, I try to incorporate my own values, my belief system and who I am.'
Despite the growth of the channel leading to opportunities including an advert for ITVX's vampire collection, Kat's appearance – online and in real life – has not been without backlash.
'I don't get many comments (in real life), but I do see disapproval on some people's faces,' Kat said.
'Online, I've had hate comments from 'putting on eyeliner doesn't make you goth' to 'you can't be a good mum looking like that'.
'There is no filter online – people just say the most horrible things, and they have no repercussions for that.'
As a young single mum, Kat said she initially turned to the internet for help with her parenting journey but quickly felt 'overwhelmed' by influencer culture.
'When my daughter was born, I really felt a lot of pressure to live up to that outwards appearance of a put-together mum,' she said.
'I had a lot of difficulties with breastfeeding and had to combi-feed… but I eventually realised that every child is so unique, and there is no right way to be a mum.'
Kat intends to keep her daughter's life private until she is old enough to make an informed choice about being online – although she would 'love' to make mother-daughter content one day if her daughter wanted to.
Her advice to other young or alternative mums is simple: be yourself.
'Nobody should be forced to change who they are to be a good mother – it's not sustainable,' Kat said.

Tammy Hembrow talks 'falling in love' again as she admits 'going at slower pace'
Tammy Hembrow has wowed fans by sharing some gorgeous new photos of herself in a blue printed dress as she spoke about 'finding love' again and 'going at a slower pace' Australian fitness model and Instagram influencer Temmy Hembrow has been hitting the headlines recently after she announced she was divorcing husband Matt Zukowski last month. The 31-year-old confirmed their split in a TikTok video, as she spoke opening about her 'heartbreak' over their decision to divorce. Tammy and Love Island Australia star Matt, 29, got engaged in December 2023 after just three months of dating. They then married on November 23, 2024, however decided to split and file for divorce just seven months later. Mum-of-three Tammy has now spoken about finding love again, however it isn't with a man. Instead, the social media star said she has "fallen in love" with where she lives again – which is Queensland, Australia. However, despite this, some fans still speculated she could have found romance again already, or is rekindling things with Matt. Tammy wrote in the Instagram post: "Lately I've found myself falling in love with where I live all over again. "The slower pace. The way so many people here have similar mindsets. Being by the ocean. Little moments of kindness from strangers (Had about 100 yesterday.) "I don't think I ever stopped noticing but lately it just feels impossible not to. And I just appreciate it more." She added: "The beauty is always there. sometimes we just have to slow down enough to see it. "(Also I feel like it should now be a universal rule to do scissors paper rock instead of fighting over a car park x)." She shared the caption alongside pictures of herself in a plunging baby blues printed dress as well as a photo of the ocean, her kids, coffees and a dessert. People were loving the post, as one person agreed: "A little kindness can honestly make my whole day." While another added: "Beautiful moments add up to a blissful life." A third chimed in: "Beautiful inside and out! We love this era of Tammy! All the blues too." However, others speculated the post was about her relationship status too. One person said: "I see signs you're falling in love with someone. I may be wrong." While another asked: "Are you back with Matt?" A representative for Tammy Hembrow has been contacted. Announcing their split on June 21, Tammy said in her TikTok: "This is giving me so much anxiety … I wanted to finally tell you guys that I am going to be getting a divorce." She then said that she didn't want to go into details about the split or 'bring anyone down." Tammy added: Did I think this was gonna happen? Did I want this? No. Obviously, when you marry someone, you do it thinking that it's gonna be forever. "And I blame no one but myself, to be honest. "I feel like I've made not the best choices when it comes to relationships. And I feel like I'm really good at putting on rose-colored glasses or just getting swept up in it all." Tammy previously told Vogue Australia that she and Zukowski had 'an instant connection' after meeting online. She said: "From the very first conversation, there was something that sparked between us,' she told the outlet. 'We were inseparable from that very first date!' Tammy has two children – son Wolf, 10, and daughter Saskia, eight – with her ex Reece Hawkins and three–year–old daughter Posy, shared with her former partner Matt Poole.

'I was dress coded by a flight attendant and it left me on the brink of tears'
"It was literally so embarrassing, just being s*** shamed in front of everybody" A woman claimed she was "dress coded" and "sl** shamed" by a flight attendant for what she was wearing on a plane. Singer Jacy boarded a Southwest Airlines flight in 2022 wearing a corset top. Due to the hot weather, with the temperature around 39C at the time, Jacy and many of her fellow flyers were wearing light clothing. But she was left on the brink of tears after the confrontation. She alleges that the cabin crew member approached her in front of other passengers and asked her to cover herself up. Not only was she hurt by the comment, Jacy felt she was "more clothed than half the plane". In a TikTok recorded after the incident, she said that the majority of travellers were wearing shorts and tank tops due to the heat, so she didn't understand why she was picked out - or her outfit deemed inappropriate. Another passenger, an actor called Melinna Bobadilla, stood up for Jacy - and claims she was thrown off the flight for doing so, The Mirror reports. Both women turned to social media in the aftermath of the 'dress coding' incident to tell their stories. Jacy, who goes by the TikTok username @maybejacy, said she was approached before getting on the plane. She said that the flight attendant tapped her on the shoulder and asked whether she had a jacket or another item of clothing she could use to put over the corset top. Jacy refused and the Southwest Airlines employee said she would get a T-shirt for the flyer to wear over her clothes. Jacy said she wouldn't wear it and boarded the plane as planned. Posting about the incident, she said: "I was literally going to cry. I was about to cry. It was literally so embarrassing, just being s*** shamed in front of everybody. If it wasn't for this lady [Melinna], my angel, I love her." Her TikTok video has accrued more than 620,000 likes since being posted. In it, Jacy is sitting in her seat holding up the T-shirt in question. She wrote: 'Bro I got dress coded on a flight? Are we in high school? Are you upset about my shoulders? It's 102F? My torso is fully clothed. And it caused a scene because some sweet lady stuck up for me and then got kicked off the flight." She captioned the video: "Give me my money back... or send me a bottle of expensive champagne." Melinna has since come forward on X, formerly Twitter, to tell her side of the story. She alleged that the flight attendant "became defensive when I asked about what rules the young woman was breaking." According to Melinna: "She responded with 'She is wearing a corset and this is a family company. Some people find it offensive.' I then told the employee that I felt threatened and offended by the man directly behind me wearing a 'Let's Go Brandon' shirt, and she did not care." She added: "Basically, Southwest Airlines s*** shamed a young woman of colour for wearing a tank top they deemed offensive, forced her to wear a company-issued sweater, removed me for questioning their misogynistic policy, exercised a double standard when enforcing an alleged offensive attire rule "The raggedy folks at Southwest Airlines in Sacramento disrespected two women of colour, endangered one by needlessly calling the cops, and went out of their way to protect a conservative white man. Yup, that tracks. Southwest Airlines is steamy, stale trash. Go out of business already." Southwest Airlines replied to Melinna's thread, which has been widely retweeted, advising her to message them directly with any further details about her experience. However, Melinna replied: "I don't have faith that this can be rectified via DMs Brenna, unless you are authorised to issue an official apology, reimburse me for all costs incurred related to booking new travel, and issue a check for damages and emotional distress." Melinna went on to claim she had called up the airline, only to be placed on hold for more than an hour on two separate calls, meaning she was unable to resolve the matter. She also advised she will be seeking legal counsel. The Mirror approached Southwest Airlines for comment when the story first came to light in 2022. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
