5 golfers who shockingly missed the cut at the 2025 Scottish Open

USA Today11-07-2025
The 2025 Genesis Scottish Open continues on this weekend from The Renaissance Club in North Berwick with a number of big names in contention.
American Chris Gotterup (-11) holds a two-stroke lead over the field after two rounds while Ludvig Aberg (-8), Matt Fitzpatrick (-8), Rory McIlroy (-7) and Xander Schauffele (-6) lurk behind him. But just as notable as the names battling it out on Saturday and Sunday are some of the names who didn't even make the cut.
The Scottish Open serves as a warm-up for The Open Championship next week at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. Hopefully these stars put the extra rest to good use.
Collin Morikawa (+4)
Pre-tournament odds: 25-1 to win
Easily the most shocking name on the list if only because Morikawa seemed safely inside the cut line when the day began. The American shot a 68 on Thursday, was one-over through nine to start his Friday and then completely collapsed to shoot six-over on the back nine — including three straight bogeys to end the round. He finished with a disappointing 76 and will look to rebound at The Open next week.
J.J. Spaun (+2)
Pre-tournament odds: 60-1 to win
It wasn't a bad week for Spaun, who shot an opening-round 70 to remain at even par, but he trended the wrong way with a two-over 72 on Friday with three bogeys. on just one birdie.
Aldrich Potgieter (+2)
Pre-tournament odds: 100-1 to win
What a rollercoaster few weeks for the 20-year-old South African. After taking T6 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Potgieter won the Rocket Classic, then withdrew from the John Deere Classic after three rounds for undisclosed reasons. Now he's cut from the Scottish Open after shooting 70-72 through two days.
Max Greyserman (E)
Pre-tournament odds: 80-1 to win
Greyserman tied for runner-up at the Rocket Classic at the end of June after quite a few promising starts. That just couldn't continue on as the tour moved across the Atlantic. The American went 70-70 and had birdie putts on his final two holes on Friday that he may be thinking about quite a bit this weekend.
Sungjae Im (E)
Pre-tournament odds: 80-1 to win
Im also went 70-70 in his first two rounds to miss the cut in what's been a pretty strange season overall for him. He has just three Top 10 finishes in 21 events this year while missing the cut in a third of his starts — including the John Deere Classic, RBC Canadian Open, PGA Championship and Genesis Invitational. Im did finish tied for seventh at The Open last year, so maybe he's due for another good week in a few days.

Nets to host preseason game against Israeli team

Brooklyn will have more than just two Israelis on the floor at Barclays Center this season. The Nets — who drafted Israeli citizens Ben Saraf and Danny Wolf in the first round — will now host a preseason game against Hapoel Jerusalem on Oct. 4. Advertisement The news was first reported by Basketball News Australia. It's not the first time the Nets will host an Israeli team, playing an exhibition game against Maccabi Ra'anana in the 2023-24 preseason. But this one may be a little different. Advertisement The Nets selected Saraf with the 26th pick in the June draft, then took Israeli-American big man Wolf minutes later at No. 27. It was the first time Jewish players had ever been picked by one team in the same round, and they will be only the second Israeli teammates in the league after Sacramento's Jordan Farmar and Omri Casspi back in 2016. Brooklyn will also face the Suns in two preseason games in Macao on Oct. 10 and 12, in the NBA's return to China for the first time since 2019.

Léon Marchand tries to break his own 200 IM world record at the swim worlds in Singapore

Associated Press SINGAPORE (AP) — Léon Marchand of France is out to break his own world record in Thursday's 200-meter individual medley at the swimming world championships in Singapore. If you missed it, Marchand only set the record on Wednesday in the semifinals at the worlds — 1 minute, 52.69 seconds. That shattered the old mark of 1:54.00 held by American Ryan Lochte since 2011. Of course, Marchand's victory is almost assured. The only question is by how much. A four-time gold medalist a year ago in the Paris Olympics, Marchand will share the stage on Day 5 with Canada's Summer McIntosh. McIntosh will go for her third medal in Singapore, this time in the 200 freestyle. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia and American Regan Smith are the main rivals. She has already won gold in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle. McIntosh is bidding for five individual gold medals in Singapore after winning three individual Olympic gold medals in Paris. Yu Zidi, the 12-year-old Chinese swimmer, is the eighth-fastest qualifier in the field as she tries to reach the podium. She was fourth in the 200 IM. Three other finals are on the day's program and the Americans have shots. The United States has won only three gold medals in Singapore with the team battling a stomach bug picked up in training camp in Thailand. Head coach Greg Meehan has suggested team health is improving. In the men's 100 freestyle, American Jack Alexy and Romanian David Popovici were the quickest qualifiers. Popovici has already won the 200 free in Singapore. He was the gold medalist at 200 in Paris, and took bronze in the 100. American Regan Smith has the quickest time in the 50 backstroke followed very closely by Lauren Cox of Britain, American Katharine Berkoff, and Wan Letian of China. The last final of the day is the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay. __ AP sports: recommended Item 1 of 3
