German FA chief defends Nagelsmann over Under-21 no shows
German Football Federation managing director Andreas Rettig has expressed surprise at critical media reports regarding national coach Julian Nagelsmann's absence from the Under-21 European Championship.
Antonio Di Salvo's Germany have reached the semi-finals in Slovakia, where they meet France on Wednesday. Senior squad coach Nagelsmann says he will come to Bratislava if they make the final, but media reports have suggested he should have been there earlier.

"This is a bit of a German phenomenon. Jogi Löw was criticized as national coach for supposedly only watching games in Freiburg. When it came to Jürgen Klinsmann, the country practically fell apart because he wasn't diligent enough in sitting in the stands at matches. And so on. I don't want to take part in this discussion," Rettig told Sky Sport.
Gennaro Gattuso, who recently took over as coach of the Italian senior team, has been in Slovakia. But Rettig pointed out that the coaches of England and France have not.
"I watched the games on site. I didn't see Mr Tuchel, Mr Deschamps or other coaches. Mr Gattuso was there because he had just started his new job," Rettig said.
The former player and Bundesliga sporting director emphasised that Nagelsmann is deeply engaged with the Under-21 team.
"You can be sure that Julian not only takes a great interest but also assesses the games in detail," Rettig said.

Edmonton Oilers' Leon Draisaitl marries Canadian actress Celeste Desjardins in fairytale wedding: 'Magical weekend'
Maid-of-honour Lauren Kyle McDavid shared behind the scenes photos from the couple's opulent nuptials. Edmonton Oilers centreman Leon Draisaitl and Canadian actress Celeste Desjardins are officially married. The pair, both 29, tied the knot on August 2 at Cháteau d'Estoublon, a historic property and vineyard located in France that was built in the 15th century. Although the couple has yet to release official wedding portraits, guests, including maid-of-honour Lauren Kyle McDavid, have shared photos from the fairytale event to social media. On Thursday, McDavid shared a series of photos to Instagram of 'the main event' that featured a behind-the-scenes look of the bridal party getting ready inside the luxurious venue. The interior and fashion designer shared a portrait of Desjardins wearing an ivory coloured strapless gown that featured a corseted bodice and slight draping on the neckline. The look was paired with a diamond earrings and tennis bracelet and minimalist veil. McDavid and the rest of the bridal party wore cream and ivory coloured silk gowns for a monochromatic, classic aesthetic. The post earned praise for the festivities from guests and followers alike. "Magical weekend," wrote actress Sarah Fisher who was a member of the bridal party. "Stunning!" a follower added. The wedding was planned with the help of Ashley Piggott Events and bridal stylist Olivia Ivey Bannock; both of whom worked with McDavid for her 2024 nuptials to Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid. Following the ceremony, Desjardins changed into a silk gown with plunging neckline and statement diamond pendant necklace to enjoy an outdoor dinner with guests. Once the sun had set, the bride slipped into a cream coloured lace mini dress with corseted bodice to dance the night away. Mara Teigen, who's engaged to former Oilers player Evander Kane, who was picked up by the Vancouver Canucks during the offseason, shared footage of the newlyweds sharing their first dance to 'Take My Heart' by the Teskey Brothers. McDavid previously shared photos from the garden-themed welcome party prior to the nuptials. The maid-of-honour wore an Art Nouveau floral Oscar de la Renta gown as she posed with guests and husband Connor in a taupe coloured suit with white button down shirt and sneakers. "Draisaitl wedding part 1," McDavid's caption read. "Welcome party of dreams." Fellow bridesmaid Mikayla Nurse, who's married to Oilers player Darnell Nurse, also shared photos from the festivities to social media, which included a photo with Desjardins prior to the wedding. "The most amazing weekend celebrating the best people," Nurse wrote. "Honoured to have stood beside you through it all." Following the wedding festivities, the newly married Draisaitls set out for a honeymoon with the McDavids in tow. The wedding comes a year after Draisaitl and Desjardins became engaged during a trip to Mallorca, Spain. The Sudbury-born actress shared photos from her seaside proposal that featured the German athlete down on one knee with ring in hand. "The easiest yes," she captioned the photos. "I love you forever." While it's unclear how the pair met, they first went Instagram-official in 2018. Prior to their wedding, Desjardins jetted to Mykonos for her bachelorette with her bridal party. She shared a carousel of images that featured the bride-to-be enjoying a night out dancing with friends, a cooking class and watching the Oilers play from her laptop in her hotel. "Somehow survived 72 hours in Mykonos!" she wrote on Instagram. "Thank you to my girls for the most unforgettable trip. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world! Love you all so much."

Bayern Munich ends commercial sponsorship deal with Rwanda, shifts to football development
German football giants, Bayern Munich has officially ended its commercial sponsorship agreement with the government of Rwanda, concluding a partnership that had aimed to promote the East African nation as a tourism and investment destination. Bayern Munich concluded its sponsorship agreement with the Rwanda government, transitioning to a developmental partnership. The revised three-year deal focuses on expanding Bayern's Youth Academy in Kigali for football talent development. Criticism regarding Rwanda's human rights record and DRC conflict influenced the change in the partnership. The deal, which had drawn scrutiny in both Germany and Rwanda, has now been restructured. According to a statement on FC Bayern Munich's official website, the club and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) have agreed to a new three-year arrangement that shifts the focus from tourism promotion to football development. Under the revised partnership, Bayern will expand its Youth Academy in Kigali, transitioning the relationship from a marketing sponsorship to a developmental initiative centred on talent cultivation and social impact. 'In constructive talks about our future direction, we agreed that a very special part of our relationship with RDB was the developmental nature of our work in Kigali through the FC Bayern Academy, ' said Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of FC Bayern Munich. ' We are therefore transforming our commercial partnership into a talent programme and expanding the FC Bayern Academy in Kigali together with the RDB as both a football and social initiative. This remains perfectly aligned with our strategic objective of developing playing talent in Africa. ' While the club's statement avoided directly addressing the reasons behind the change, German media widely reported that the decision followed increasing criticism of Rwanda's human rights record and its alleged support for armed groups involved in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Human rights, DRC conflict may have spurred Bayern exit Launched with Arsenal and PSG before extending to Bayern in 2023, the 'Visit Rwanda' campaign aimed to position the country as a global tourism hub. Rwanda reportedly paid Bayern €10 million annually for branding and youth football programs. While not officially stated, Bayern's withdrawal is widely linked to growing criticism of Rwanda's human rights record and its alleged role in the DRC conflict. The decision comes amid growing scrutiny in Germany of partnerships with authoritarian-leaning governments, particularly those involving state-funded tourism campaigns. In February, Bayern Munich supporters publicly expressed their disapproval, displaying a banner at a home match that accused the club of 'betraying its values' through the Rwanda partnership. Kigali has faced sustained allegations of suppressing dissent and supporting rebel groups destabilizing eastern DRC. This, combined with pressure from German media, civil society groups, and political figures, intensified calls for Bayern to reconsider its ties. The DRC government also urged international partners to distance themselves from Rwanda as violence in the region escalated. For Rwanda, the termination represents a reputational blow. The Kagame government has prioritized sports diplomacy, most notably through high-profile sponsorships with clubs like Arsenal, PSG, and Bayern, as a tool to reshape international perceptions and attract tourism.

German soccer club defends pulling out of buying Israeli player Shon Weissman over his Gaza posts
DÜSSELDORF, Germany (AP) — The chairman of Fortuna Düsseldorf has defended the German soccer club's decision to pull out of signing Israeli player Shon Weissman after fan backlash over his contentious social media posts about Gaza, and said it's 'absurd' to accuse the second-division team of antisemitism. Düsseldorf announced Tuesday that it would not sign Weissman from Spanish team Granada despite having been in advanced negotiations. Fans had opposed the planned signing of the 29-year-old Weissman because of his social media posts expressing support for Israel's conduct in Gaza following the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Weissman's Instagram account was set to 'private' on Saturday. In the social media post on Tuesday announcing the decision, the club did not say why it had called off the transfer. But Fortuna issued a statement on Friday saying Weissman's 'statements on social media and the subsequent handling of them were not consistent with our values.' Chairman Klaus Allofs defended the club's decision before the team's match against Hannover on Saturday, but acknowledged that a faster process to reach the decision would have been preferable. 'I wouldn't say it was a mistake. We tried to sign a player and I think that's legitimate,' Allofs said. 'It's also part of our values, that we don't limit ourselves with prejudices and rule things out from the start.' Allofs said the club deliberately waited to consult with Jewish community members in Düsseldorf before deciding against the signing. Asked about accusations of antisemitism, Allofs said: 'It's absurd, to put it bluntly." Israel's air and ground campaign has killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza, displaced most of the population, destroyed vast areas and pushed the territory toward famine. Hamas-led militants triggered the war when they stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and abducting 251 people. Shortly after those attacks, Weissman sat out Granada's Spanish league game at Osasuna over security concerns. Authorities had been worried about a potentially hostile atmosphere created by Osasuna supporters angered by Weissman's social media posts.
