Dubai, United Arab Emirates: As the UAE advances toward its net-zero emissions target by 2050 and enforces stringent green building standards, the demand for eco-conscious construction materials is steadily rising. Spanish ceramic tiles are playing an increasingly prominent role in this transformation, known for their sustainable manufacturing processes, energy-efficient properties, and design versatility. Projects such as Abu Dhabi's Al Qana development exemplify how these materials combine durability, cultural sensitivity, and sustainability within the region's architectural landscape.
The 24th edition of the Tile of Spain Awards recognising excellence in Architecture, Interior Design, and Final Degree Projects (MTP) is now open for entries. Organised by ASCER (Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers' Association), the international competition champions innovation in the use of Spanish ceramic tiles across global design and architecture projects.
This year's awards present a timely opportunity for design professionals in the UAE, where material innovation is a growing focus. The inclusion of Spanish ceramics in local projects continues to align with the country's push for aesthetically distinctive, technically robust, and environmentally responsible design solutions.
The 2025 edition introduces new subcategories in the Architecture and Interior Design segments, distinguishing projects based on the type of ceramic used such as dry-pressed porcelain and other ceramics including mosaics, terracotta, and extruded stoneware.
The Tile of Spain Awards are supported by the Regional Ministry of Finance of the Generalitat Valenciana. The jury will be chaired by the architect Julio Touza Rodríguez and includes several leading figures from the fields of architecture and design.The deadline for submitting projects is 20 October 2025.

TikTok Launches 'Footnotes' Feature in US
Taarek Refaat TikTok has rolled out a new feature called 'Footnotes' in the United States for the first time, giving users the ability to add explanatory notes that provide context to videos. The tool allows creators to clarify complex topics, such as breaking down scientific concepts, adding updated statistics to an ongoing news story, or even choosing whether comments appear alongside the video. The move draws comparisons to community fact-checking tools already in use on other platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. X pioneered the concept in 2021 under the name 'Birdwatch,' which continued after Elon Musk's 2022 takeover. Octavio Vinhas, a researcher at Brazil's National Institute for Science and Technology in Conflicts and Information Sovereignty, said the initiative aligns with U.S. President Donald Trump's more liberal vision of free expression on social media. However, he noted that TikTok's Footnotes differ from X's approach, as TikTok still prompts users to cite sources for their notes, something not required on X. Scott Hale, associate professor at the Oxford Internet Institute, explained that the main challenge for all social media companies is ensuring that the right people see these notes. Platforms typically use similarity-based ranking systems, comparing what content a user receives with that of others, as well as accounts followed or videos watched. The algorithm also exposes content to users deemed 'different' from the note's author to test its usefulness. Only notes passing this evaluation appear publicly. But according to Vinhas, most notes never reach an audience. A June study by the Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA) found that over 90% of the 1.7 million English- and Spanish-language notes in X's public database had never been published online. While the average time to publish notes dropped to 14 days in 2025, down from 100 days in 2022, delays still persist. Hale added that discovering notes that challenge a user's perspective remains difficult, given social media's tendency to reinforce existing beliefs. 'It's very easy to lock ourselves into parts of networks that are similar to us,' he said. UK watchdog bans Zara ads over 'unhealthily thin' model photos - Style - Life & Style
Britain's advertising regulator on Wednesday banned two adverts by Spanish clothing group Zara for featuring models that appeared 'unhealthily thin', calling the images 'irresponsible'. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said it took action after it received a complaint about the ads, which were listed on Zara's website in May. One image showed a model with 'protruding' collarbones, with her pose and styling making her appear 'very slim'. Another featured a model who looked 'slightly gaunt' owing to a slicked-back hairstyle and that the lighting and clothing made her appear 'noticeably thin', the ASA said. The watchdog ruled the ads breached social responsibility rules and must not appear again in the same form. Zara told the ASA that the models were medically certified as healthy, in line with British guidelines. It also assured that only minor lighting and colouring edits were made on the images. The ads were removed after the ASA made the company aware of the complaint, Zara said in a statement. It added that Zara 'follow stringent guidelines and controls in the selection and photographing of models'.
