City police arrest lawyer accused of assaulting junior woman colleague

The Hindu15-05-2025
The City police arrested advocate Beyline Das, who has been accused of assaulting his junior woman colleague J.B. Shyamili, at his office in Vanchiyoor last week.
Officials said a plainclothes squad took Mr. Das's custody from a location near Station Kadavu in the Puthenvelikara police station, near Thumpa, late Thursday.
They said the police would record his detailed statement and produce him before the Judicial First Class Magistrate court on Friday.
Mr. Das's arrest came hours after he moved to the Principal District Sessions Court, Thiruvananthapuram, seeking anticipatory bail.
The court posted the bail plea for hearing on Friday. Mr. Das faced charges of assault and use of criminal force against a woman, voluntarily causing hurt and outraging the woman's modesty under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, 2023.
Ms. Shyamili displayed the severe facial injuries she sustained in the alleged assault in front of television cameras on Tuesday, causing a huge public outcry.
A Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association office-bearer came under severe criticism from the legal fraternity and civil society for allegedly preventing the police from arresting Mr. Das from the latter's office in Vanchiyoor on the same day of the incident.
Ms. Shyamili alleged that the lawyer had maltreated her earlier for frivolous official reasons, even when she was pregnant. Public support surged for the young lawyer, with Law Minister P. Rajeeve and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Thiruvananthapuram district secretary V. Joy, MLA, calling on her to express the government's support and solidarity.
ICC in courts
Mr. Rajeeve called for the constitution of Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) in district courts. He said the person who prevented the police from arresting Mr. Das would face prosecution. He sought the legal community's support for Ms. Shyamili.
On Wednesday, the Bar Council of Kerala barred Mr. Das from appearing before any court, tribunal or judicial forum, pending investigation and disciplinary proceedings.
A general body meeting of the Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association on Thursday declared support for Ms. Shyamili. Earlier on Wednesday, the association had suspended Mr. Das's membership.
Political affiliations
Meanwhile, a political row erupted between the Congress and the CPI(M) over Mr. Das's party affiliations. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said that Mr. Das had contested the 2015 local body elections on a CPI(M) ticket. The CPI(M) clarified that Mr. Das left the CPI(M) to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and later the Congress.

CPI(M) flays economic priorities of State, Centre

Senior leaders of the CPI(M) flayed the State and the Central government for extending a red carpet to the corporates with the taxpayers' money while the burden of price rise was being borne by the poor. The CPI(M) leader U. Basavaraj said that though the people of the country pay ₹50 lakh crore in taxes to the Centre and ₹3-₹4 lakh crore is received by the State government, the amount was being used to benefit the corporate companies. He was speaking at the concluding programme of the political campaign organised by the CPI(M) Mysuru district committee at Gandhi Square here. Mr. Basavaraju said India ranked 105th in the Global Hunger Index, and the unemployment rate was high; hence, the claim that it was the fourth-largest economy was questionable. Though nearly 70 crore people were receiving rations through the public distribution system and nutritious food was being distributed through the Anganwadis, the scourge of hunger and malnutrition persisted and put a question mark on the claims of being the fourth largest economy, said Mr. Basavaraju. The economic policies of the Central and State governments also received flak, and the CPI(M) wondered whether the two were working for the corporates or the economically impoverished section of the population. District secretary Jagadeesh Surya said that no project has been introduced in the district for job creation. There is neither a government law college nor an engineering college in the district, and no government seems to be concerned about it, he added. The district ranks second in the State in terms of farmer suicides, but the State and Central governments are not focusing on improving farmers' lives here, he said. Mr. Jagadish Surya urged the government to establish ward-level clinics and strengthen primary health centres in the district. He also demanded that farmers cultivating gomala (common) and forest lands be issued cultivation rights. Homage was also paid to the former Chief Minister of Kerala V.S. Achuthanandan who died recently.

Election Commission wraps up enumeration phase in Bihar, 65 lakh voters out of draft roll due to...

Bihar Elections: A day before the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a batch of pleas challenging the Election Commission's decision to undertake a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, ECI On Sunday said that it has successfully concluded the enumeration phase of the Special Summary Revision (SIR) in Bihar, held from June 24 to July 25, 2025. In what is being hailed as one of the most comprehensive electoral exercises in the state, more than 7.24 crore electors – out of a total of 7.89 crore – submitted their enumeration forms, reflecting a massive outreach and high voter engagement. According to a detailed press release shared by the election commission, as many as 65 lakh voters will not figure in the state's new draft electoral rolls, which are to be published on August 1. This includes 22 lakh deceased electors (2.83 per cent), 36 lakh (4.59 per cent) who have permanently shifted or not found and seven lakh (0.89 per cent) who have enrolled at more than one place. This large-scale campaign, which began just a few months before the high-stakes Bihar assembly elections, was aimed at ensuring 'No Elector Left Behind', with a focus on first-time voters, urban populations, migrants, and vulnerable groups such as the elderly and persons with disabilities. All 12 major political parties actively took part in the exercise. The number of Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by political outfits increased by over 16 per cent during the campaign. Notably, CPI(M) and Congress recorded over 100% increase in BLA nominations, with CPI(M) showing a remarkable 1083% jump. BJP led the tally with over 53,000 BLAs, followed closely by RJD and JD(U). To ensure maximum inclusion, more than 5.7 crore SMS alerts were sent to registered voters, while the CEO of Bihar collaborated with counterparts across States/UTs to reach temporary migrants from Bihar. Around 29 lakh forms were submitted digitally, either through the ECI website or mobile app, signifying an increasing shift towards tech-savvy voter engagement. Similarly, 'electors whose Enumeration Forms were received were sent repeat SMSs, as an acknowledgement of submission of their form. A total of 10.2 crore SMSs have been sent since the beginning of the exercise,' the poll panel said. Young citizens turning 18 by October 1, 2025, are being encouraged to register from August 1 to September 1. 'ECI will conduct special campaigns across Bihar from August 1 to September 1 2025, to enrol such young electors, so that all eligible electors can be enrolled and no one is left out,' the ECI said. Volunteers and officials are assisting senior citizens and PwD voters in completing documentation. The draft roll will be made available both digitally and in print on August 1. Any inclusions, deletions, or corrections must be submitted during the one-month window. No name will be removed without a formal speaking order, and appeals can be made under Section 24 of the RP Act, 1950. With meticulous planning and mass involvement, the ECI's enumeration push in Bihar is being seen as a model for voter inclusion and electoral transparency.
