Jinkx Monsoon Calls Out J.K. Rowling's Name

Buzz Feed2 days ago
When it rains, it pours.
This is Broadway star and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Jinkx Monsoon, and she had a few cleverly-placed words for the author best known for creating the Harry Potter series.
In a clip for her upcoming interview with Ziwe, Jinkx answered a cheeky question about whether or not J.K. Rowling would "make a good Roxy Hart in Chicago."
In addition to winning Season 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race and Season 7 of Drag Race All Stars, Jinkx has starred on Broadway as Ruth in Pirates! A Penzance Musical, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, and "Mama" Morton in Chicago. She is set to take over as Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! in August 2025.
Jinkx feigned confusion about J.K.'s identity, seemingly addressing a larger conversation surrounding the British author's anti-trans politics.
"Who is Jake? Who is he? Jake Hay Rowling?" Jinkx asked.
When Ziwe pointed out that J.K. was a "she", Jinkx immediately said, "Oh, dear. That is not a feminine name in the slightest."
Jinkx then suggested that J.K. intentionally misled readers about her gender. "I know that oftentimes, female authors use initials so that people assume it's a male writer," Jinkx said, before adding, "I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived."
Ziwe and Jinkx locked eyes for a moment, and she responded, "Gagging."
In a July 2017 Teen Vogue interview, J.K., whose real name is Joanne, revealed that her publisher for Harry Potter suggested she "disguise" the fact she was a woman so the book "might appeal" to all genders. The author said it didn't last long because once she got a lot of publicity and an advance from America, she was "outed as a woman." Notably, J.K. also writes The Cormoran Strike series under the pen name Robert Galbraith.
Over the last few years, J.K. has made headlines for her anti-Trans comments and active campaigning against laws in the UK that would allow transgender people to change their legal gender. Earlier this year, when the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the legal definition of a woman only applied to those whose biological sex is female, J.K. shared a photo with the caption, "I love it when a plan comes together."

The full interview airs on July 31 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

This Caribbean Island's Sunken City Was a Pirate Stronghold—and Now It's a New UNESCO World Heritage Site

Talk about a transformation. Formerly known as the "Wickedest City on Earth," the once pirate-controlled town of Port Royal, Jamaica, has been named a new UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rich historical and cultural legacy. The history of Port Royal encapsulates the most dramatic extremes of the colonial-era Caribbean. Located at the tip of a sandbar extending into the mouth of the harbor in Kingston, Jamaica, the city was considered one of the most strategically significant destinations for early colonial powers in the region. Once the British took over in the 17th century, it quickly became one of the wealthiest cities in the Caribbean. Less savory characters soon saw the city's strategic value, too, with notorious privateers and pirates like Captain Henry Morgan and Calico Jack setting up shop in Port Royal. Within just a few decades, Port Royal was transformed into a haven for pirates and the rum-fueled celebrations they brought with them. In 1692, Jamaica was struck by a devastating earthquake, sending the sandy foundations of nearly two-thirds of the city sinking beneath the sea in an instant. Port Royal was never able to return to its former glory (or infamy), with most survivors fleeing to the site that would become modern-day Kingston. View of inside Fort Charles. Jamaica National Heritage Trust "Port Royal's recent designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is significant, validating the relevance of its history to Jamaica and the world," said Michelle and Suzanne Rousseau, the creative duo behind Two Sisters, which explores Jamaica's rich heritage through culinary and cultural experiences in a restored country estate. "Port Royal is a part of Kingston life, and like most Jamaicans, we love it for its beauty and history and for all that lies beneath the surface of its blue waters that was lost." Orlando Bloom fans may recognize Port Royal for its central role in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. While the city is referenced heavily in the film, historic Port Royal didn't serve as the film's backdrop. Instead, crews recreated the 17th-century city near the black-sand beaches of Wallilabou on the island of St. Vincent. Fans can still visit the St. Vincent film sets today, but there's even more to see in the true Port Royal, now protected in perpetuity with its UNESCO designation. Visitors can explore the historic Fort Charles, the only fort in Port Royal to survive the 1692 earthquake, now open as a museum. The fort is also home to Nelson's Quarterdeck, where Horatio Nelson once lived, and Giddy House, a half-submerged artillery store constructed in 1888 that was almost swallowed up in yet another devastating earthquake, which struck in 1907. Aerial view of Fort Charles. Jamaica National Heritage Trust Port Royal joins just one other UNESCO site in Jamaica: the Blue and John Crow Mountains. Coffee lovers will recognize Jamaica's Blue Mountains as home to some of the best coffee in the Caribbean, but the mountains hold an important ecological richness and historic heritage as well. A refuge for Indigenous Taino people and Africans fleeing slavery, this densely forested mountain range north of Kingston became home to some of the spiritual, religious, medicinal, and cultural traditions that define the nation today. Port Royal's official UNESCO designation is a welcome addition for the nation, which has long celebrated the multifaceted historic and cultural legacy of this formerly pirate-controlled city. Locals hope it's another reason for visitors to get beyond popular sites like the island's white-sand beaches, too. "This is just another reason to make Kingston a part of any visit to our island, and we are so thrilled," say the Rousseau sisters; Port Royal is just a 20-minute drive from the heart of the island's capital. The pirates may be long gone, but the rum is still flowing, and now, Port Royal has even more reason to celebrate.

Charles Busch Reacts To ‘Psycho Beach Party' Joining Criterion: 'Kind Of Wild'

After 25 years, a far-out queer cult classic by Charles Busch is getting the Criterion treatment this month. The Psycho Beach Party creator and star recently reacted to the 2000 beach party parody joining the Criterion Channel this month in honor of its 25th anniversary, reflecting on the 'kind of wild' journey from its 1987 off-Broadway origins. More from Deadline 'Yellowjackets' Star Liv Hewson Talks 'Beautiful Meta' Moment With Lauren Ambrose & Potentially 'Fascinating' Lesbian Drama Ahead 'Burnt Milk:' Criterion Channel Acquires Venice Biennale Film By Joseph Douglas Elmhirst 'Yellowjackets' Co-Creator Ashley Lyle Says "I Relate Deeply" To Deceased Character: "A Little Bit Of Me" 'It's funny, it started off as a spoof of beach party movies, and the more I worked on it, I thought there was a little more to it,' he told IndieWire. 'That maybe it is a little bit personal about how, when you're young, and you don't quite know who you are, and you feel like you're a different person with your parents, your friends, at your school, it's a bit of a metaphor for that.' Busch added, 'I believe the Criterion Collection has taken on the movie. I was just looking through their catalogue and, my god, to think of it… [to be] in the same collection as the greatest films by Fellini and Kurosawa and Truffaut. It's kind of wild. These movies can kind of disappear, and I'm hoping this will lead to Criterion taking on my follow-up picture, Die, Mommie, Die!, which I'm very proud of.' Originally titled Gidget Goes Psychotic, before it was changed due to copyright reasons, Charles originated the lead role of 16-year old Chicklet in the play when it first debuted. Busch then wrote and appeared as Captain Monica Stark in the 2000 feature adaptation, which starred Lauren Ambrose as Chicklet Forrest, a tomboy struggling to fit in with a '60s Malibu surfer crowd. Meanwhile, her split personality begins popping up as a serial killer picks off her friends. In February, Ambrose reflected on the film's 25th anniversary and working with 'the amazing Charles Busch' on Psycho Beach Party. 'That's a film that came from Charles' one-man show in a walkup theater in New York that he did like every weekend for years and years, and played all the characters,' Ambrose told Deadline. 'And then I got to play a version of Charles Busch in the film when I was a kid, and it was an amazing time.' The film also starred Thomas Gibson, Kimberley Davies, Matt Keeslar, Nicholas Brendon, Beth Broderick, Amy Adams, Kathleen Robertson and more. In addition to joining the Criterion Collection, Psycho Beach Party's original producer and distributor Strand Releasing is planning a physical re-release in the near future.
