PM Modi begins Cyprus, Canada, Croatia tour today, 1st foreign visit after Op Sindoor
Before arriving in Canada on Monday for the G7 Summit, PM Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus, the first by an Indian PM in over two decades, and will also travel to Croatia, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian prime minister. PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus, Canada and Croatia from June 15-19, the MEA said Saturday. PM Modi will visit Cyprus on June 15-16, on his way to Canada to participate in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on June 16-17, and conclude the five-day visit with an official visit to Croatia on June 18. This will be PM Modi's first foreign tour after Operation Sindoor. 'At the invitation of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus June 15-16. This will be the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades,' the MEA said. In Nicosia, Modi will hold talks with Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol. The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union, as per the MEA. Cyprus had condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and indicated that it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan at the EU-level discussions. The visit will be timely as Cyprus is set to take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026. In the second leg of his visit, PM Modi will travel to Kananaskis to participate in the G7 Summit, his sixth time in a row. On June 6, PM Modi received a call from Canadian PM Carney inviting him for the summit. At the summit, PM Modi will exchange views with G7 heads of states, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on global issues, 'including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues', the MEA said. The Modi-Carney meeting on the sidelines summit next week will be an opportunity to explore ways to reset ties, the MEA said on Thursday. The development comes after more than a year-and-a-half of strained diplomatic ties between the two countries, triggered by former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's allegations about the 'potential' involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. India rejected the charges as 'absurd' and 'motivated', and consequently, both nations expelled high commissioners and other senior diplomats. PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines, officials say, even as modalities are being worked out. The G7 Leaders' Summit will be held from June 15-17. In the final leg of his tour, PM Modi will undertake an official visit to Croatia and hold bilateral discussions with his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenković and meet the President of Croatia, Zoran Milanovic. The visit to Croatia will also underscore India's commitment to further strengthen its engagement with partners in the EU. In the wake of Operation Sindoor, the PM had cancelled his nation-nation tour to Europe, which included Croatia, Norway and the Netherlands. EdoT Israel-Iran conflict may be in focus Though the G7 Summit agenda this year was focussed on building supply chains for critical minerals, energy security, and countering foreign interference and transnational crime, the focus is likely to be on the Israel-Iran conflict and containing any escalation. PM Narendra Modi is likely to hold discussions with various stakeholders on the issue and express India's stance on dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward. Tej Pratap Yadav faces probe for entering Kashi Vishwanath temple's restricted ‘Red Zone'
Tej Pratap Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad's son, has courted controversy over a visit to the Kashi Vishwanath temple Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, where he allegedly stepped inside the restricted 'Red Zone'. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple administration has ordered an investigation over a video circulating on social media purportedly showing the former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav inside the temple's restricted 'Red Zone', according to a news agency PTI report. The red zone, where mobile phones are not permitted, refers to the area within the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor that also includes the temple premises. The video showing Tej Pratap Yadav inside the temple premises is doing rounds on social media since Thursday, officials said. Kashi Vishwanath CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra said that the temple administration recently got to know of the video through social media platforms and various newspapers. The temple administration said information has been shared with the CRPF and the local police, which are responsible for the temple's security. "Information has been sent to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local police administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and take action against the responsible personnel of the concerned agency," PTI quoted Mishra. "Both agencies have been requested to ensure strict adherence to the prescribed rules and guidelines within the temple premises. Their investigation will also verify the authenticity of the content circulated on social media and identify any personnel found to be at fault. If any violation of rules is found at any level, appropriate legal action against the concerned individuals, " Mishra added. Tej Pratap had hit headlines a few weeks ago as well when RJD president expelled him from the party, besides declaring that he "shall have nothing to do with the family", after a photo of him with a woman went viral. The move came on May 25, a day after Tej Pratap Yadav's Facebook post announced that he was "in a relationship for 12 years" with a woman, despite being married and his divorce petition still pending before a family court here. He, however, deleted the post a few hours later, claiming on X that his Facebook page was "hacked."

Tripura BJP stages rallies protesting attack on Tagore's ancestral house in Bangladesh
BJP state vice president Subal Bhowmik and general secretary Bhagaban Das led the protest rally near Agartala Integrated Land Customs Station condemning the attack on Tagore's ancestral house in Sirajganj district of Bangladesh. Thousands of party leaders, workers and supporters, holding party flags, participated in protest rallies in all the ten organisational districts of the state and raised slogans against the interim government in the neighbouring country for failing to protect the historic structure. Agartala, Jun 14 (PTI) The Tripura unit of the BJP on Saturday staged protest rallies across the state protesting the attack and vandalisation of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral house in Bangladesh. 'We took out rallies in all the organisational districts of the party, condemning the attack by fundamentalist groups. Under Muhammad Yunus, a chaotic situation has been created in Bangladesh and minorities are facing hardships,' Das told reporters. 'The attack on Tagore's ancestral house is an attack on Bengali heritage and our identity. If such attacks continue, we will launch massive protests in future,' he said. The party's media in-charge, Sunit Sarkar, said that under the Yunus regime, it appears fundamentalists have a free run in Bangladesh. 'The attack on Tagore's ancestral house is a glaring example of how fundamentalists have become active in the neighbouring country. The BJP will not remain silent if such a situation continues to prevail,' he said. Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma said, 'How do we expect that a nation, which could not show respect to its father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will tolerate Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore?' 'The library of Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya at Comilla was vandalised senselessly by fundamentalist groups. We strongly condemned the attack on Tagore's house. They forget that Bangladesh's national anthem is Tagore's creation. They should show him some respect,' he said. PTI PS ACD This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
