How to open a Zerodha demat account online? A step-by-step guide

Mint3 days ago

Opening a new demat account is the essential initial step for anyone in the country aspiring to invest or trade in equities, mutual funds or other securities. Zerodha, one of India's largest and most widely used discount brokerage firms, provides a streamlined process for opening a new demat account and facilitating trading online.
It caters to both professional and new investors. The entire procedure of opening the demat account remains fully digital and can be completed in just a matter of minutes for most applicants.
All one needs to do is to collect all the necessary documents such as PAN card, Aadhaar card, bank statements along with other required documents.
The process of opening a demat account with Zerodha is a simple, straightforward process. It requires nearly no paperwork. Applicants must ensure their Aadhaar card is linked to a mobile number for OTP based verification. The five key steps are elaborated below: Visit the official Zerodha account opening portal. Enter your mobile number, email address along with other details. Verify both via OTP. Provide your PAN card details, Aadhaar details and correct date of birth. Upload bank proof, such as a cancelled cheque or statement, and complete the e-signature process. Submit the application, then wait for verification; account credentials are typically issued within 24 to 48 hours on working days.
To comply with Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) rules and regulations, applicants must submit: PAN card.
Aadhaar card (linked to a mobile number)
Bank proof (cancelled cheque, bank statement, or passbook)
Income proof (only if opting for derivatives/F&O trading)
Scanned signature in blue or black ink.
In person verification (IPV) might be required. This can be completed online through webcam or physically if required. For those individuals whose Aadhaar is not linked to a mobile number, an offline process has also been set up. It is crucial to note that the offline process might take a little longer and even attract a nominal fee.
Zerodha charges ₹ 200 for online account opening for individuals. Annual maintenance charges range from ₹ 0 to ₹ 300 based on holdings. For non-individual accounts, opening costs ₹ 500 and AMC ranges from ₹ 300 to ₹ 1,000 per year. Further, BSDA holders may be eligible for reduced or zero AMC depending on their holdings.
The brokerage firm supports Basic Services Demat Accounts (BSDA) accounts, provides seamless Kite and Console platforms and integrates tools such as Coin for mutual funds and Sensibull for options trading.
Note: The charges discussed above are illustrative in nature. For the updated terms, conditions and charges refer to the official website of Zerodha. Aadhaar must be linked to an active mobile number for online account opening.
Income proof is mandatory only for F&O trading.
Account verification and activation generally occur within 24 to 48 working hours.
Offline account opening incurs a fee and takes longer.
Regulatory compliance with SEBI and KYC norms is strictly enforced.
This simple yet effective digital process aligns with the broader efforts of Indian regulators including Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and SEBI to foster financial inclusion, transparency and accountability in capital markets.
Hence, as retail participation continues to surge, platforms such as Zerodha are instrumental in making the equity markets more democratic, efficient and retail investor friendly and assist them with proper investments and compounding of their wealth.
Disclaimer: Equity investments are subject to market risks. Please read all scheme-related documents carefully before investing. Charges, processes, and eligibility may vary; refer to Zerodha's official website for the latest details.

Senior Taiwan official visits site of new Alaska LNG project

TAIPEI, - A senior Taiwanese official said on Saturday he had this week visited the site of a potentially enormous new liquified natural gas project in Alaska that the Trump administration has been pushing hard to allies in Asia as a supply option. Energy developer Glenfarne had said on Tuesday that 50 firms had formally expressed interest in contracts worth more than $115 billion from its Alaska LNG project, a massive infrastructure deal championed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Writing on his Facebook page, Pan Men-an, secretary-general to Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, said he had attended an energy conference in Alaska at the invitation of U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and visited the state's North Slope. Phase One of the project is expected to deliver natural gas about 1,230 km from the North Slope to the Anchorage region. "Despite the freezing temperatures, we talked enthusiastically about building resilience and responsibility as democratic partners in the face of global climate change and the challenges of authoritarianism," Pan wrote. "In the face of trade challenges and international turbulence, we have no choice but to rise to the occasion," he said, without mentioning whether he had signed any deals while there. The presidential office said late on Friday that Pan had been accompanied by Fang Jeng-zen, chairman of Taiwan's state-owned energy company CPC. CPC in March signed a non-binding agreement to buy LNG and invest in the project, a move Taiwan's president has said would ensure the island's energy security. If built, the Alaska LNG project will export up to 20 million metric tons of the superchilled gas a year. It would open direct access for U.S.-made LNG to Asian markets without having to go through the Panama Canal or around the Horn of Africa, reducing transit time and costs. Taiwan has pledged to massively ramp up its purchases from the United States, including energy, to reduce a yawning trade surplus that has angered Washington.

Haryana: Affordable housing e-draw portal to be linked with Aadhaar to tackle irregularities

GURUGRAM : Govt's online portal for drawing of lots in affordable housing schemes will directly cross-check and verify applicant details with information in the Aadhaar card to make the process more transparent and eliminate chances of duplication or manipulation. Officials of the department of town and country planning (DTCP) said on Friday that the updated portal – called TCP Haryana – will fetch applicant details such as name, address and mobile number from the Aadhaar card. This will prevent manual data entry errors and manipulation while ensuring that only eligible candidates are considered for allotments. The move comes in response to irregularities uncovered in the 2023 housing draw of Aster Avenue 36 in Sector 36, Sohna. During the draw of lots for 702 flats at the society, those with addresses given as 'Sohna City' were considered eligible for the scheme, limiting the pool to 2,200 entries out of 51,000 applicants. This was blamed on a technical error. Cross-checking with Aadhaar would do away with chances of such errors, officials said. The Aster Avenue draw was cancelled after an internal probe, and a fresh draw was conducted. But 26 applicants were found to have been repeated in both the shortlists, raising more concerns about fairness and the integrity of the system. "Going forward, the Aadhaar-linked system will automatically populate the applicant's details and verify if they have previously been allotted flats under any affordable housing scheme. If found ineligible, their application will be auto-rejected by the system," said Renuka Singh, senior town planner, DTCP. "All past applicant data from earlier schemes is now being integrated into this upgraded software," Singh said. Additionally, the system will prevent any duplicate entries and ensure that no one can bypass eligibility rules. The new mechanism is expected to significantly reduce the administrative burden and potential biases associated with manual data handling. The Aster Avenue 36 matter is currently pending before the Punjab and Haryana high court, and the next hearing is scheduled for July 9. Applicants who were declared successful in the original draw have yet to receive refunds, while allotment letters for 702 flats drawn in the second round remain on hold because of ongoing legal proceedings.
