Driver caught doing 'record' speed on Germany's autobahn at 124mph over the limit
Police in Germany caught a driver on the autobahn doing 199mph (320kph) which was a staggering 124mph over the road's speed limit. The motorist was snared on a highway near to Berlin last month.
The Porsche driver was said to be motoring at close to three times the speed limit for that stretch of the road before being caught in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, west of Berlin. Their name and age have not been released.
German authorities said they issued a €900 (£785) fine and a three-month suspension of their licence. And the driver also had two points added from their licence.
If you rack up eight points in Germany, you can have your licence permanently revoked. As per the Independent, the speeding motorist was caught by a roadside radar stand which is known as a 'Enforcement Trailer' on the A2 highway near Burg on July 28.
And a reading from its display reportedly showed 'the highest record speed' of 321kph, police said.
Germany's autobahns, or motorways, are known for their lack of speed limit in places. However, there are some certain sections. The speed limits tend to be in areas with more traffic congestion.
Autobahns can also introduce limits when roadworks are in place. The speeder was caught in an area with a 75mph (120km/h) limit.
The lack of consistent speed limits on the autobahns has been the subject of debate over the years with authorities and driving clubs airing their views on whether they should be limited.
A poll in 2019 found that around half of Germans were opposed to speed restrictions on their highways.
Around a third of the autobahn network does have an upper limit of 81 mph (130kph), roughly 8,000 miles of road. But an eighth has no limit and is derestricted, according to Green Flag.

Speeds of up to 125 mph are said to be common on stretches of the autobahn which can make overtaking a risky business.
Green Flag say: "One moment you may see a wide open space in your rear mirror and pull out to overtake. The next there is an irate driver flashing his lights for you to move over."
Where there are speed limits, it is to regulate noise near urban centres and reduce safety risks on roads deemed unfit for unlimited speeding. In 2019, a poll found roughly half of Germans remain opposed to autobahn speed limits.
To combat excessive speeds on the autobahn, major German car manufacturers, except for Porsche, are said to follow a gentleman's agreement and limit the top speeds of their powerful cars.
However, these limiters can be deactivated.
Slower vehicles with a top speed of less than 60mph are banned from using the road network. Scooters and motorbikes with low engine capacity cannot use the autobahns either.

Sturgeon warned to urgently apologise for Salmond claims
Ms Sturgeon strongly denied she was involved in a "conspiracy" against her former mentor and insisted she was not part of the leak to the Daily Record. The excerpt published in The Times on Saturday said: "I do not know who leaked it, but it was not me or anyone acting with my authority or knowledge." However, she then said: "It crossed my mind many times that it might have been Alex himself or someone acting on his behalf. "To those with no experience of the dark arts of media manipulation, I know this will sound preposterous. However, in many ways it would have been classic Alex. "I had known him to make these kind of calculations in the past. If there is damaging information certain to emerge about you and there is nothing you can do to stop it, get it out in a way that gives you the best chance of controlling the narrative." Read more: However, David Clegg, the journalist who broke the story while political editor of the Daily Record, told BBC Scotland's the Sunday Show the claims by Ms Sturgeon were "not credible". Asked if there was any sense to Ms Sturgeon's comments, he said: "No would be my sense of that. "If it was Alex Salmond who had leaked it, when I phoned him up that night to put the claims to him, he did an incredible acting job of seeming surprised and shocked. "It always struck me as not credible and I would be very surprised if that was the case." He told the BBC programme that he does not know who leaked the documents as they appeared at the Record offices anonymously by post. (Image: PA) Mr Salmond, who suddenly in North Macedonia last year, was investigated by the Scottish Government in 2018 after two women made allegations of sexual misconduct against him. The findings were leaked to the Daily Record ahead of being published, with Mr Salmond then launching a judicial review of how the inquiry was handled. The Scottish Government initially defended the judicial review before dropping its defence. The review concluded the process was "unlawful, unfair and tainted by apparent bias," with Mr Salmond then awarded £500,000 in legal expenses. A separate police investigation and criminal trial followed in 2020. Mr Salmond was cleared of 14 charges, which included attempted rape, but his lawyer admitted during the trial that his client could have been a "better man". The fallout from the allegations ruptured the SNP and broke up one of the most renowned political duos in UK politics. Allies of Mr Salmond have reacted furiously to Ms Sturgeon's remarks, with former SNP minister Alex Neil stating: "Sturgeon should immediately issue a retraction and an apology to Moira Salmond for the hurt she has caused her." Read more: Former SNP MP Joanna Cherry - one of the fiercest critics of Ms Sturgeon - wrote on X: "On her own admission Sturgeon knew about the allegations in March 2018, And the idea that Alex leaked the existence of them to the Daily Record is ludicrous." Kenny MacAskill, who leads the Alba Party founded by Mr Salmond in 2021, accused Ms Sturgeon of "seeking to rewrite history and distorting the truth". He said: "It was Nicola Sturgeon's Government which was found to have acted unlawfully, procedurally unfairly, and tainted with apparent bias. It was for that reason that enhanced expenses were awarded against the Government. "Far from being some passive bystander Ms Sturgeon was at the centre of events that many see as a conspiracy. "It's why there has to be an inquiry into the role of the Scottish Government in their actions against Alex Salmond and the cover up that has been ongoing ever since. "History will judge her cruelly as her legacy is shown to be tawdry and failed but justice dictates that there is a full accounting for her role in this shameful episode." Meanwhile, Chris McEleny, former general secretary of Alba, accused Ms Sturgeon of "fabricating" the story in her memoir. In her memoir, the former first minister said Mr Salmond appeared at her home near Glasgow in April 2018, where he informed her of the allegations against him. "The substance of the complaints, one in particular, shocked me," she wrote. Mr Salmond, she said, initially appeared "upset and mortified" before "effectively" admitting the substance of one complaint. She said it was clear her predecessor wanted her to "intervene" to stop the investigation, adding that her refusal to do so "made the break-up of one of the most successful partnerships in modern British politics all but inevitable".

Mob boss Mark Richardson 'only letting right-hand man visit him in prison'
The gangland kingpin's empire has been under siege since March with machete murder bids, firebombings on businesses and properties linked to him. Feared Edinburgh crime boss Mark Richardson is only letting his right hand man visit him in prison. The gangland kingpin's empire has been under siege since March with machete murder bids, firebombings on businesses and properties linked to him, and masked gunmen targeting his closest associates, reports Edinburgh Live. The brutal wave of attacks is believed to be orchestrated by Dubai based Ross McGill, a former Rangers ultra who fled to the Middle East years ago and is said to have the backing of several underworld figures. McGill, sources claim, vowed to unleash violence on Richardson and anyone connected to him after the 38-year-old's crew allegedly paid for a drugs stash with fake notes. Friends and even Richardson's former partner have been caught up in the blood feud in recent months. In July, we told how McGill was "lying low" after a police crackdown on gang violence saw 55 arrests made under Operation Portaledge. One source said McGill had been running out of foot soldiers in the capital after the spate of arrests linked to physical attacks and petrol-bombings on homes and cars. Now a second source has confirmed Richardson is only allowing close ally David Togher to visit him at HMP Low Moss. Back in March, it was claimed Togher was chased through the street by machete-wielding thugs but managed to escape. In 2017, the ex-soldier was caged for six years for a broad daylight blade attack on notorious gangster Sean "Lugs" McGovern, just hours before McGovern was due to return to prison from home leave. Togher is now understood to be one of Richardson's most trusted lieutenants and the only person allowed into visits. He has also been spotted taking DVDs in for the mob boss. A source told Edinburgh Live: "It has all gone quiet recently but Togher is the only one Richardson is allowed to visit him in prison. He was taking him in DVDs and other items. "Richardson is keeping his cards close to his chest. He is remaining tight-lipped regarding any mention of reprisal attacks for what has happened in recent months. "One thing that is certain is Richardson thinks he has had the p**s taken out of him by McGill and there will be repercussions but he is keeping his nose clean in prison."

Man killed in horror incident after tractor ploughs into parked cars at vintage car show
The show remains closed today following the incident on Saturday night. A man has died in a horror accident after a tractor ploughed into parked cars at a vintage car show. The incident at the event in Fiddington, near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, saw the tractor, which had been driven through fields beforehand, collide with "hedges and some stationery vehicles" at around 11.25pm on Saturday, August 9. The man, a passenger in his 50s, sustained serious injuries. Members of the public provided first aid before emergency services arrived, but paramedics were unable to save him. His family and the local coroner have been notified of his death, the Mirror reports. Gloucestershire Constabulary said in a statement that a man in his 20s had been arrested afterwards, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The force added that the show, which was immediately halted following the crash, would remain closed on Sunday. A spokesperson said: "A man aged in his 20s, who is believed to have been driving the tractor, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through alcohol. "The Severn Vale Vintage Club annual show had taken place at the location yesterday. Due to the incident, the organiser has said the event will be closed today." An appeal for information has since been launched, with police requesting anybody with information or who witnessed the incident to come forward. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! In an unrelated incident, a Fatal Accident Inquiry into the tragic death of a Glasgow schoolboy at a building site has concluded. Shea Ryan, 10, died from a head injury on July 16, 2020 after he climbed through an unsecured fence within the site in Drumchapel, and fell 20ft down an incomplete manhole. A sheriff has ruled that two contracting firms failed to take 'reasonable and sufficient measures' to protect the public from danger at the site. The sheriff identified multiple precautions that could 'realistically have resulted in the accident and Shea's death being avoided".
