Who is the ideal candidate to replace Virat Kohli at No. 4 ahead of England Tests?
NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli's Test retirement has forced the selectors to find a new, long-term option for the No. 4 slot. Kohli manned the position for over a decade after taking over from Sachin Tendulkar in 2013.

India's batting has worn a vulnerable look since Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane started fading away and Kohli and
subsequently hit a prolonged rough patch. There is a strong possibility that Shubman Gill, touted as India's next long-term captain, could be asked to take responsibility of the No. 4 spot to hold the batting together.

However, it is not a straightforward call.
Gill has been known to be a reluctant middleorder batter. It took much effort from previous head coach Rahul Dravid to convince him to give up the opening slot in Tests. One of the reasons behind the move was to prepare him for possibly taking up the No. 4 position when Kohli eventually vacated the spot.
WV Raman, former India opener who coached India U-19s when Gill played, believes his spot should not be disturbed. 'Gill has opened or batted at No.
3 all his life. KL Rahul is the most experienced batter in the lineup. We don't have anyone to match the stature of Kohli and Tendulkar. In that scenario, the most experienced batter has to be given the responsibility of batting at No. 4,' Raman said.
The selectors are also considering including Rajat Patidar in the squad. Karun Nair too could be in England for the India A tour. It will be interesting to see if the committee looks at
, who has previously struggled overseas.

Former India selector Devang Gandhi believes Rahul will do a good job at No. 4 given his experience in the middle order. 'Rahul's career has revolved around fitting in places where the team needed someone to fill in. At the moment, Sai Sudharsan is in form and has the confidence. Let him open,' Gandhi told
TOI
, 'If the team management feels Rahul is settled at the top, then they should see Gill as the option to bat at No. 4. Gill has the game of a good middle-order batter.
We saw that during his days with India 'A'. And if he becomes captain, it could be a long-term responsible role.'

Ravi Shastri opens up about Virat Kohli's retirement, says ‘I would've made him Captain straight after Australia'
Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, by posting a heartwarming note on his Instagram handle. The news spread like wildfire and speculations were made on the reasons for his retirement ahead of Team India's new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. While Kohli's Ranji coach Sarandeep Singh expressed shock by saying that the 36-year-old wanted to smash centuries in India's upcoming five-match Test series against England, there were some reports suggesting Kohli willfully took the decision to opt out. Former India coach and cricketer Ravi Shastri gave his take on the star player's retirement. Ravi Shastri called out the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over Kohli's Test retirement. The former India head coach claimed that the situation should have been handled in a better manner with clear communication. He noted that if the situation were in his hands, he would have made the star batter captain of Team India after the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025. "I feel sad that he's gone the way he has — suddenly. I think it could have been handled better, maybe with more communication. If I had anything to do with it, I would've made him captain straight after Australia," Shastri said. "Virat has announced his retirement from Test matches, which is sad, you know because he's a great player. A great player. It's only when you go that people truly realise how big a player you were. Stats don't do justice — it's about the way he carried himself, especially as an ambassador for Test match cricket, particularly overseas. The way he played at Lord's, and how his team turned things around — it was unreal. And I'm glad I was a part of it," added Shastri in an interaction with Sony Sports. Virat Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies in 2011. In his remarkable career, the 36-year-old played 210 innings in the Test format and accumulated 9,230 runs, with his highest individual score of 254*. He has smashed 30 centuries and 31 fifties in 123 matches that he was a part of, making him the fourth-highest run-getter for India in red-ball cricket.

India will come with high hopes, England looking forward to battle: Brendon McCullum
England head coach Brendon McCullum said the young Indian Test team will arrive with high hopes, but he remains clear about the direction he wants to take his side in as they gear up for a challenging five-match home begin their new World Test Championship cycle with a five-Test series against England, starting at Headingley on 20 June. India, without the services of the retired Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will be led by new skipper Shubman Gill. The squad features a promising crop of young batters, including Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi are aiming for their first Test series win in England since 2007. "It's important the guys refresh. We know where we want to get to as a Test team," McCullum told Sky Sports bowling resources have taken a hit ahead of the series. Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the first Test, Mark Wood is unavailable for the entire summer due to injury, and Gus Atkinson is still recovering from a hamstring strain sustained during the one-off Test against Zimbabwe a fortnight Woakes used the India A match as preparation, bowling 32 overs and picking up five wickets. Josh Tongue, who is "likely to be part of the Test XI at Headingley," chipped in with two wickets."There are some quality bowlers unavailable, but we have a nice, varied attack with Chris Woakes, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, and Josh Tongue providing the high-pace also have Shoaib Bashir, who is growing in confidence with every Test. We know we're going to be tested against India, and they will arrive well-prepared."They're an outstanding cricketing nation, they'll come here with high hopes, and we're looking forward to the contest."The England coach also praised young all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who returns to the 14-man group after impressing in New Zealand over the winter with three fifties from the No. 3 spot."Bethell has a good life in front of him," McCullum added."For a 21-year-old, he's got a real poise, and that allows him to go out there and be present and show off his flair and talent. The world is his oyster. He's already becoming a leader in the dressing room, which is what you want."Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett have reminded me of Duckett and Zak Crawley in the Test game. We know how good Duckett is, but the power that Smith possesses is amazing. These guys are fearless, and if you add the craft, then you hope you end up with a rounded player." You May Also Like
