Ravi Shastri opens up about Virat Kohli's retirement, says ‘I would've made him Captain straight after Australia'
Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, by posting a heartwarming note on his Instagram handle. The news spread like wildfire and speculations were made on the reasons for his retirement ahead of Team India's new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
While Kohli's Ranji coach Sarandeep Singh expressed shock by saying that the 36-year-old wanted to smash centuries in India's upcoming five-match Test series against England, there were some reports suggesting Kohli willfully took the decision to opt out. Former India coach and cricketer Ravi Shastri gave his take on the star player's retirement.
Ravi Shastri called out the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over Kohli's Test retirement. The former India head coach claimed that the situation should have been handled in a better manner with clear communication. He noted that if the situation were in his hands, he would have made the star batter captain of Team India after the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025.
"I feel sad that he's gone the way he has — suddenly. I think it could have been handled better, maybe with more communication. If I had anything to do with it, I would've made him captain straight after Australia," Shastri said.
"Virat has announced his retirement from Test matches, which is sad, you know because he's a great player. A great player. It's only when you go that people truly realise how big a player you were. Stats don't do justice — it's about the way he carried himself, especially as an ambassador for Test match cricket, particularly overseas. The way he played at Lord's, and how his team turned things around — it was unreal. And I'm glad I was a part of it," added Shastri in an interaction with Sony Sports.
Virat Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies in 2011. In his remarkable career, the 36-year-old played 210 innings in the Test format and accumulated 9,230 runs, with his highest individual score of 254*. He has smashed 30 centuries and 31 fifties in 123 matches that he was a part of, making him the fourth-highest run-getter for India in red-ball cricket.

WWE star Tiffany Stratton hilariously steals the show with wild first pitch at Mets Game
When WWE Women's Champion Tiffany Stratton stepped onto the mound at Citi Field, she wasn't there to fight, but she sure delivered a performance. Just not the kind Mets fans expected. The pro wrestler was in Queens on Thursday to throw the ceremonial first pitch ahead of the Mets' series against the Washington Nationals. Dressed in a custom Mets City Connect jersey bearing her name, Stratton made her way to the field ready for action. But her throw? Let's just say it missed its mark… by a mile. Stratton opted for a casual toss rather than a full windup. But despite skipping the theatrics, the throw flew skyward-well over the catcher's head. Spectators quickly drew comparisons between her attempt and an exaggerated slow-pitch softball lob. Some even joked it resembled an "eephus pitch", a term baseball purists use for high, looping, unpredictable pitches that confuse batters, reported TMZ. Even so, she wasn't phased. Stratton later posted about the moment on Instagram, writing: 'Put me in Mets.' A post shared by TIFFANY STRATTON (@tiffanywwe) Until this week, former NFL star Taylor Lewan held the internet's attention with his own embarrassing first pitch, thrown during a recent Cardinals game. Stratton's throw, however, gave his misfire serious competition. While Lewan's ball veered off wildly to the left, Stratton's missile simply cleared everything in sight. It didn't bounce. It didn't reach the catcher. It just… kept going. Naturally, the side-by-side comparisons poured in online. ALSO READ: WWE RAW brings bad news for John Cena fans For all the playful ribbing, Stratton can take solace in this: she's far from owning the worst ceremonial pitch at Citi Field. That title, baseball fans insist, still belongs to rapper 50 Cent, whose infamous 2014 throw veered dramatically off course and into viral infamy. As the moment made the rounds on social media, many users reminded everyone: there's always next time. And if there's one thing WWE stars are known for, it's comebacks. Q1: Who is Tiffany Stratton?Tiffany Stratton is the current WWE Women's Champion known for her high-energy performances and glamorous wrestling persona. She has quickly become one of WWE's most talked-about stars. Q2: When and where did she throw the pitch?Stratton threw the ceremonial first pitch on Thursday at Citi Field in Flushing, Queens, during the Mets' final game of their series against the Washington Nationals. Q3: How did people react to her pitch? The pitch missed the catcher by a wide margin, leading to good-natured comparisons to Taylor Lewan's recent throw. Social media had a field day, but Stratton took it in stride and even asked to be put in the Mets line-up.

New fitness plan for Tamil Nadu's Ranji Trophy hopefuls
CHENNAI: In a bid to ensure the Tamil Nadu men's probables for the Ranji Trophy are in the best shape at the start of the domestic season, the Robin Singh-led TNCA Academy and new head coach M Senthilnathan have devised a programme with focus on fitness and workload. As part of the programme, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) franchises have been requested to let certain players follow the prescribed routine on their 'rest' days. 'After the players join the Ranji Trophy camp around the start of September, I want to use the time to hone their skills, formulate strategies and prepare for the matches ahead. We cannot allot a lot of time just for fitness,' Senthilnathan told TOI. 'We will try to follow the same (programme) at the beginning of the next TNCA first division campaign and during the Buchi Babu tournament (invitational red-ball event hosted by the TNCA). We want to set a base and gradually improve the players' fitness so that they report fully fit before the domestic season,' Senthilnathan added. Senthilnathan, who replaced L Balaji at the helm, said that the TNPL franchises have considered the bigger picture – TN performing well in domestic tournaments – and have been 'cooperative'. The first leg of the TNPL concluded on Wednesday in Coimbatore, while the second phase will begin on Friday in Salem. 'The TNCA had a summer camp for about 40 boys. The selectors then prepared a list of other boys, including the regulars. The plan is to monitor them during the TNPL. We have been in touch with the teams, players and coaches,' Senthilnathan said. 'On an average, the players have three days in between the TNPL matches, and we want them to make the best use of those. We have asked the players to follow the routine on certain days. While the TNCA Academy trainers have created a fitness routine, I have prepared a workload plan for batters and bowlers.' For Senthilnathan, 'volume' is key. 'A batter may face a maximum of 300 balls during the course of the TNPL. We do not know the number of balls he plays in training. Similarly, the fast bowlers will not have enough overs under their belt. When they are asked to suddenly bowl about 15 overs in a day (in a Ranji match), they struggle and get injured sometimes. We do not want such things to happen,' Senthilnathan explained. No Ranji group games at Chepauk The MA Chidambaram Stadium will not host any Ranji group games due to outfield renovation. 'Until the end of the T20 World Cup next year, there will be no other matches at Chepauk. The renovation work will get over in January and the TNCA will then have to hand over the venue to the ICC,' said a TNCA source. It means that the MAC stadium will miss out on Ranji group matches for the second season in a row. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
