Will Mustafizur Rahman join Delhi Capitals for rest of IPL 2025? Bangladesh pacer takes flight to Dubai instead of India

Mint15-05-2025

Delhi Capitals on Wednesday named Mustafizur Rahman for the rest of Indian Premier League (IPL) as a replacement for Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk but the Bangladesh pacer's participation is still uncertain as he is yet to get an No-Objection Certificate from his board.
His doubtful participation became more relevant when Rahman was pictured boarding the flight to Dubai for Bangladesh's two-match T20I series against UAE on May 17 and 19. The IPL 2025 came to a one-week halt due to the rising India-Pakistan tensions across border.
With the immediate ceasefire announced by both the countries, the BCCI decided to resume IPL 2025 with a revised schedule for the remaining 17 matches. According to the revised schedule, Delhi Capitals play Gujarat Titans (May 18), Mumbai Indians (May 21) and Punjab Kings (May 24).
Based on a Cricbuzz report, giving Mustafizur a NOC to play IPL would put the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in a fix with regards to two other players who are also playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Rishad Hossain and Nahid Rana were playing in the PSL before the tournament was suspended for a few days due to India-Pakistan tensions. PSL is resuming on May 17. Notably, Rishad and Nahid are also a part of the Bangladesh team for UAE T20Is.
If Mustafizur gets the NOC, the BCB would be forced to do the same with Rishad and Nahid too. "We are not saying that we won't let Mustafizur play in the IPL for the Delhi Capitals but at the same time, there is a thing called national commitment and he needs to fulfil that," a BCB official was quoted as saying to the website.

'Along with that, if we had released him in that case, what would we have done with the two cricketers who took part in PSL, as they could have asked why we were not releasing them? We don't want to be in a position that allows any Board to point a finger at us,' he said.
Delhi Capitals are placed fifth in the IPL 2025 points table with 13 points. They need to win all their final games to be in contention for a place in the playoffs which start on May 29.

‘You expect India to be here, but same could be said of South Africa too': Pat Cummins on WTC final

Australia captain Pat Cummins has said he expected India to be in the World Test Championship final while brushing aside any notion that South Africa had an easy way to the showpiece event set to begin at Lord's from Wednesday. Having already won the 50-over World Cup and a WTC final in succession, Cummins has the opportunity to make history by becoming the first captain to win successive WTC. Defending champions Australia start as firm favourites against South Africa and Cummins when asked if he was surprised about the opponent for the final said, 'In some ways you expect India to be around. England have been quite strong at home and New Zealand always seem to get to finals. But the same case could be made for South Africa in ICC events. We just don't see a lot of them in Test cricket but it's nice and different to an Australia-India final.' Soon after South Africa qualified for the final, former England captain Michael Vaughan ridiculed their road to Lord's saying they beat a team of nobodies pointing to the fact that they didn't play Australia and England in the current WTC cycle. But Cummins chose to keep aside all of it. 'You can only beat who you come up against. Our route to the final was pretty tough but I don't blame South Africa for having a different route,' Cummins said. Coming into the final, there is a bit of unknown about how these two teams which enjoy a storied rivalry would face-off at Lord's and Cummins said he expects nothing less from South Africa. 'It's hard to say because there are so many unknowns. We haven't played them much [with their last Test series ending in an easy Australian victory at home in 2022-23] but you've got to be really well balanced to make the final. Their bowling has always stood out and it's no different now. [Keshav] Maharaj is a really solid spinner and they've always got plenty of quick bowlers who pose a challenge.' A win at Lord's would also be a high point for Australia's attack which includes the famous four of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Cummins. The upcoming Ashes could well turn out to be the last time all four could play and the Lord's final is certainly the first big match all the four will feature in. 'We've got quite a few players who are past their mid-30s and there seems to be a natural attrition rate into the late‑30s. If you'd asked me a year or two ago I would have said: 'It's going to be a huge change. There's a little bit to be worried about.' But we've seen Josh Inglis, Sam Konstas, [Nathan] McSweeney debut throughout [Australia's] summer. [Beau] Webster's come in plus a few others have debuted in white-ball cricket. I don't think the transition will be as jarring as we first thought,' Cummins added.

Back In Kent, Pacer Arshdeep Singh Focussing Rhythm Ahead Of England Tests

India left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is delighted to be back in Kent where he had earlier played county cricket as he looks to rediscover his red-ball rhythm ahead of the five-match Test series against England beginning June 20. The 26-year-old is eyeing his maiden Test appearance after being named in the Indian squad. The team is playing a four-day tour match against India A at the Kent County Cricket Ground at Beckenham from June 13. Primarily known for his white-ball exploits, Arshdeep, who represented Kent in the County Championship two years ago, had a notable season in the IPL 2025 with Punjab Kings, who finished runners-up. "As for today's training session, my only motivation was to get a feel for the rhythm -- how the body feels, how the red ball is coming out of the hand -- because all the players have been playing with the white ball for quite a while. So I really enjoyed it," he told "Going forward, as we keep progressing step by step, the intensity will keep increasing, and we'll keep making it more and more difficult for the batters to face the ball." India, without the services of retired Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will be led by new skipper Shubman Gill. The team includes a crop of young batters such as Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Arshdeep said he is enjoying bowling to his team-mates as he sharpens his red-ball skills. "It was fun bowling to the batters. They looked quite compact, and there was a competitive spirit—even though we were just working on rhythm, they were fully competing. So that made it even more fun," he said. "We had to grind properly and try to get them out with a solid plan. Sai has joined the team for the first time, and he looked very compact too. The skipper looked in good touch. I'll try my best to keep improving and get them out more often going ahead." 'When your attack includes Bumrah, comparison doesn't exist' Arshdeep said he is focused on enhancing his skills while training alongside pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. "Whenever I hold the ball, I always feel that I am the best. But everyone knows—when you're in an attack that includes a player named Jasprit Bumrah, then the word 'comparison' doesn't even exist," he said. "So, the focus is on how we can improve each other's game, each other's skill sets—and how we can help the team. That's where my focus lies." Reflecting on his earlier stint in Kent, Arshdeep said: "It feels really good to be here. At first, you get that 'homely' feeling, that yes, I've spent two months here before, so it feels great. I'm really looking forward to creating many more memories here. "It's a small place, very peaceful. Not many people around. If you need peace of mind, this is the best place—because there's always a cool breeze blowing, a soft warmth from the sun, and when you sip hot chocolate in that setting, it's pure bliss. "And if you have a sweet tooth, make sure to have some churros with it," said Arshdeep. The opening Test begins in Leeds on June 20.
