New York Liberty return home struggling after disappointing road trip
Help is on the way, though, as Leonie Fiebich will return from playing in the EuroBasket tournament for Germany. That will give New York back one of its two missing starters. Jonquel Jones still is recovering from a sprained ankle and is out for a few more weeks.
The team really has missed the two starters as its defense has struggled lately, giving up at least 89 points in three of the four road contests — including all three defeats.
The schedule also gets kinder to the Liberty with an eight-game homestand for most of July. With the All-Star break thrown in, New York doesn't leave Barclays Center until a game at Dallas on July 28. The Liberty will welcome Caitlin Clark and the Fever twice over that span as well as rival Las Vegas.

The WNBA All-Star starters were announced led by captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier. The pair will draft their teams after the reserves are revealed. Both are first-time captains. Clark, by virtue of receiving the most fan votes, will have the first pick in the draft. Other starters included Nneka Ogwumike, A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Aliyah Boston and Satou Sabally in the front court. Sabrina Ionescu, Allisha Gray and rookie Paige Bueckers got the nod in the backcourt.

Minnesota still is the No. 1 team with Phoenix and Atlanta behind the Lynx. New York, Golden State and Las Vegas were next. Seattle dropped three spots to seventh. Indiana and Washington followed the Storm. Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and Connecticut rounded out the poll.
Expanded footprint
The WNBA announced three new teams will be joining the league with Cleveland set to begin play in 2028, Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030. That will give the league 18 teams — the most it's ever had since it first started play in 1997.
Player of the week
Angel Reese of Chicago averaged 19.7 points, 17 rebounds and five assists to help the Sky win two of their three games last week. Other players receiving votes were Napheesa Collier of Minnesota, Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana and A'ja Wilson of Las Vegas.
Game of the week
Seattle at New York. The Storm play a three-game East Coast trip stopping in Atlanta, New York and Connecticut. They dropped two of their last three games and will try and get back on the winning track.

Cardinals' Contreras sustains left hand contusion when hit by pitch from Pirates ace Skenes
PITTSBURGH (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras sustained a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch by Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes while leading off the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to the Pirates. Contreras stayed in the game to run the bases and was thrown out at home plate by Pirates left fielder Tommy Pham to end the inning while trying to score from second base on Pedro Pages' single. Contreras had X-rays on the hand, and they came back negative. He and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said it is doubtful that the three-time All-Star will play in the teams' series finale on Wednesday. Contreas was replaced in the bottom of the fourth by Alec Burleson, who shifted from left field. Garrett Hampson took over in left. Contreras is hitting .248 in 82 games with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. The 33-year-old Contreras sustained a season-ending fractured left middle finger last Aug. 24 when he was hit by a pitch. 'When I get hit in the arm or hand, I get a little worried,' Contreras said. 'I think I'm going to be OK, just a day or two (off).' ___

Missing Clark, Fever soar past Lynx 74-59 to win WNBA Commissioner's Cup
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Natasha Howard had 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists on Tuesday night as the Indiana Fever defeated the Minnesota Lynx 74-59 in the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. The Fever were missing All-Star guard Caitlin Clark , who has been sidelined since June 24 with a strained groin. That didn't slow down the Fever, who overcame an early 13-point deficit with balanced scoring and a stout defensive performance against the team with the best record in the league. Minnesota had its worst offensive performance of the season, shooting 34.9% from the floor and making 4-of-16 3-pointers after averaging 9.4 3-pointers this season. Sophie Cunningham scored 13 points while Aliyah Boston, Aari McDonald and Kelsey Mitchell each scored 12 points. Alanna Smith led Minnesota with 15 points. Napheesa Collier had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Courtney Williams added 11 points but had six of the team's 16 turnovers. Smith hit a 3-pointer and made an acrobatic layup to cap a 12-0 run that gave Minnesota an 18-9 lead. The Lynx stretched their lead to 27-14 early in the second quarter. But they were held scoreless for the final 8:17 of the half, gong 0 for 10 from the floor as the Fever stormed back. Cunningham hit a pair of 3s as Indiana closed the quarter on an 18-0 run to take a 32-27 lead at the half. The Fever built their lead to double figures as Howard scored 10 points in the third quarter and the Lynx never got closer than seven the rest of the way. When Minnesota rallied to cut their deficit to 60-51 midway through the fourth quarter, Cunningham buried her third 3-pointer of the night to silence the crowd and send the Fever on their way.
