Ex-Yankees Starter Now Mentoring Young Player on Division Rival
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
The New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles have been having polar opposite seasons. The Yankees have looked like one of the best teams in baseball, while the Orioles have disappointed their fans and underachieved.
The Orioles have Coby Mayo playing first base in the wake of Ryan Mountcastle's injury. Mayo had 73 starts at first base in the minor leagues, but playing the position in the big leagues is a different story. However, according to the Baltimore Sun's Matt Weyrich, May has a former Yankee mentoring him in Anthony Rizzo.
"When I got drafted, (Rizzo) immediately wanted to start working out with me," Mayo told The Baltimore Sun's Weyrich. "He pushed to work out with me. He wanted to kind of get me in his corner, and it's been nice to have somebody like that, a potential Hall of Famer, World Series winner, a great guy in the clubhouse, just be with him and how hard he works. He's just an unbelievable person."

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - JUNE 01: Coby Mayo #16 of the Baltimore Orioles reacts after striking out against the Chicago White Sox at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on June 01, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland.Mayo said Rizzo is "in his corner," and he's a great person to lean on. Rizzo is a four-time Gold Glover, Platinum Glover and three-time All-Star. His time with the Yankees was not as glamorous.
Some injuries derailed his tenure with the Yankees. Ultimately, he played in 370 games across four seasons, slashing .234/.326/.409. Mayo is a young player and has made most of his starts in the big leagues at third base. However, he is now having to adjust to being a first baseman until Mountcastle is back.
Mountcastle is a trade candidate as the Orioles continue to struggle. If he is dealt, Mayo could see even more time at first base. Luckily for him, he has a strong relationship with one of the best first basemen of this generation.

2025 NBA Draft: Ranking the best guards in the class, led by Rutgers star Dylan Harper
Let's run down the top prospects in the 2025 NBA Draft by position. Here are the best guards in the class. You can also find the entire Big Board, plus a full two-round mock draft and scouting reports for every single prospect, in the 2025 NBA Draft Guide. Height: 6-5 • Weight: 213 • Class: Freshman • Age: 19.3 Advertisement Harper is a big-bodied lefty combo guard with NBA blood in his veins, as the son of Ron Harper, who was a 20/5/5 guy before winning five titles as a role player. Like his father, Harper has a high-floor with the skill, poise, and playmaking instincts to dictate the game at his pace. But the fate of his jumper will determine whether he's an All-Star or just one of the NBA's many solid guards. (Grant Thomas/Yahoo Sports Illustration) Height: 6-5 • Weight: 190 • Class: Freshman • Age: 19.3 Johnson is a clutch shot-maker who can catch fire from all over the floor, drilling step-backs and off-screen jumpers with ease. But he needs to continue developing his point guard skills while also honing his shot selection and dramatically improving his defense. Height: 6-5 • Weight: 205 • Class: Freshman • Age: 18.7 Advertisement Fears is a dynamic guard with a twitchy attacking style and a knack for coming through as a clutch shooter. He was one of college basketball's youngest freshmen, and it showed with his shaky decision-making as a shooter and passer. But he has a feel for shot creation and a handle that lets him get anywhere on the floor, so he may only need time to emerge as a star. Height: 6-5 • Weight: 205 • Class: Freshman • Age: 19 Jakučionis is a slick shot-creator with a creative passing gene and a fearless scoring ability, carving up defenses with crafty finishes, step-back jumpers, and jaw-dropping passes. But as a freshman he'd follow up those highlights with turnover brain-farts that derail the hype train. Height: 6-1 • Weight: 178 • Class: Freshman • Age: 19.7 Advertisement Richardson is a skilled combo guard with a lethal midrange game and a poised pick-and-roll feel, looking like he downloaded the experience of his NBA veteran father, Jason Richardson. Jase didn't inherit his father's height or dunk contest athleticism though, so his smaller stature could cap his upside. You can find the entire Big Board, plus a full two-round mock draft and scouting reports for every single prospect, in the 2025 NBA Draft Guide.

Former Mets All-Star pitcher Noah Syndergaard attempting MLB comeback with White Sox
The Chicago White Sox have signed Noah Syndergaard to a minor league contract nearly two years after the former All-Star pitcher last pitched in an MLB game. The White Sox confirmed to media Tuesday that Syndergaard has reported to the team's spring training complex in Glendale, Arizona. It's not clear where within the White Sox system Syndergaard will go from there. Advertisement Syndergaard, 32, is an eight-season MLB veteran who made his name with the New York Mets thanks to an imposing fastball and effective curveball that he leveraged with his 6-foot-6 frame. He made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2015 at 22 years old and was a starter as the Mets advanced to the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. He made an All-Star team the following season while posting a career-best 2.60 ERA with 218 strikeouts and 43 walks in 183 2/3 innings. Advertisement Syndergaard left New York in free agency ahead of the 2022 season to sign a one-year, $21 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels traded him that season to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Syndergaard ahead of the 2023 season, then traded him to the Cleveland Guardians before the trade deadline. The Guardians released him after six starts. Syndergaard posted a 6.50 ERA with the Dodgers and Guardians in his last MLB season. For his career, Syndergaard has a 3.71 ERA and 1.196 WHIP with 928 strikeouts in 941 1/3 innings pitched. The White Sox are rolling the dice that Syndergaard can regain some of his previous form.

Rangers left-hander Cody Bradford will have elbow surgery after setback in rehab
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers left-hander Cody Bradford will have elbow surgery Wednesday after a setback during his rehab from a left elbow sprain that has kept him out all season. Chris Young, the team's president of baseball operations, said Tuesday that Bradford felt something in his elbow when he resumed throwing after a recent flu bug. He then saw team physician Dr. Keith Meister, who will do the surgery. The 27-year-old Bradford is 10-6 with a 4.28 ERA in 34 games (21 starts) for Texas the past two seasons. He was expected to be part of the starting rotation this season, but was shut down during spring training in mid-March because of elbow soreness. As a rookie, Bradford was 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in five relief appearances during the 2023 playoffs when the Rangers won their first World Series title. He pitched a scoreless inning in Game 1 and another in Game 4 against Arizona in the World Series. Young said the team would have a better idea of a timeline for Bradford's recovery after the surgery is done, and that it would depend on the extent of the procedure. 'A tough blow for the team, but more importantly for Cody. He had worked extremely hard, looked great this spring,' Young said. 'Obviously was going to be a big part of our season this year, and to lose him today is tough news. ... We look forward to helping Cody get back to full health and contributing in the future.' ___ AP MLB:
