Zara's death exposes systemic failures: LDP

Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: 'This is not just about one child's death. It is about whether we are willing to confront systemic failures and take real action to ensure this never happens again,' Chin said. Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir exposed systemic failures in protecting children and delivering justice. 'This is not just about one child's death. It is about whether we are willing to confront systemic failures and take real action to ensure this never happens again,' said its President Chin Shu Ying. Advertisement The Attorney-General's Chambers has ordered the exhumation of Zara's remains for a fresh post-mortem examination, which LDP welcomed as important for establishing the truth and restoring public confidence. However, he said the incident must catalyse broader institutional reforms beyond a single investigation. The party called for the establishment of an independent investigation panel comprising legal experts, child protection advocates, medical specialists and civil society representatives to ensure impartial oversight. On school safety, it called for mandatory 24-hour warden coverage in all boarding facilities, closed-circuit television installation in common areas and secure access controls. It also advocated compulsory anti-bullying education programs and annual safeguarding training for educational staff as well as confidential reporting channels for students to raise concerns without fear of reprisal. The party's reform agenda extends to legislative changes, including strengthened laws imposing clear accountability on educational institutions for student safety and stricter penalties for negligence or cover-ups by responsible parties. Also mandatory public reporting of serious school incidents with accompanying action plans. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MCE Holdings eyes expansion phase amid contract wins

PETALING JAYA: MCE Holdings Berhad is entering a multi-year growth phase, underpinned by landmark contract wins, strategic global expansion and a diversification into high-value automotive electronics. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research has initiated coverage with a 'buy' rating and a target price of RM2.40, implying a 66.7% capital upside. It sees MCE as 'a resilient, scalable proxy to Malaysia's transition towards high-value auto electronics and the global 'China + N' supply chain realignment'. At the heart of MCE's growth outlook is its breakthrough entry into the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain for Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua). HLIB Research reported that the company secured contracts to supply high-value infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), raising potential revenue per vehicle to approximately RM3,000, which is 10 times its traditional content value. The research unit estimated annual revenue from this programme to reach RM39.8mil to RM59.7mil, or up to 38% of turnover for the financial year ended July 2024 (FY24), if Perodua meets its targeted sales volumes. MCE is also accelerating its international presence, with significant wins in the US market. Contracts with Nasdaq-listed Dorman Products and Michigan-based JVIS USA will add a combined RM30.3mil in annual revenue at full ramp-up. HLIB Research noted that these contracts were secured via competitive global tenders, underscoring MCE's 'technical credibility and global competitiveness'. Beyond automotive, the group is also moving into new verticals. A joint venture with Hong Kong's Sounding Industries will produce non-automotive products with minimal capital expenditure, while a partnership with China's Nanjing Chuhang Technology will position MCE in the fast-growing mmWave radar segment for ADAS. In addition, HLIB Research reported that financially, MCE has turned around its pre-FY22 losses, supported by Proton Holdings Bhd's sales recovery and deeper supply ties with Perodua. Core earnings are forecast to grow at a 15.8% compounded annual growth rate between FY25 and FY27, reaching RM27mil by FY27, with full-year contributions from EV, export and non-automotive contracts. The group's balance sheet remains strong, with net cash of RM83.6mil, or about 42% of market capitalisation.

MACC probe ongoing in citizenship bribery case involving Home Ministry officers

KUALA LUMPUR: The bribery case involving two officers from the Home Ministry and a member of the public, related to expediting citizenship applications, is still under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said in line with the MACC Act 2009, the commission is prohibited from disclosing any details of the ongoing investigation. "This case is still under investigation by the MACC," she said in a parliamentary written reply. Azalina said this in response to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who enquired about the development of the case. On May 8, MACC confirmed the arrest of two officers from the Home Ministry and one member of the public to assist in investigations into a bribery case involving efforts to expedite applications for citizenship. Meanwhile, commenting on MACC's investigation into former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin and former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Azalina said such details of the case could not be disclosed by the commission as one of the cases is still under the court's consideration. "Therefore, this question concerns a matter that is sub judice, which is contrary to Standing Order 23(1)(g) of the Standing Orders of the Dewan Rakyat and should not be answered. "Based on feedback received from the MACC, the commission is also not bound to disclose any details relating to the ongoing investigation, in line with the act," she said in response to Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong), who enquired on the status of the MACC's investigation into Daim and Ismail Sabri. In July, MACC filed a notice of application at the Sessions Court to forfeit more than RM169 million linked to Ismail Sabri. It was also reported that MACC has moved to seize and forfeit more than RM3 billion worth of assets allegedly linked to Daim, his widow Toh Puan Na'imah Khalid, their family members, and close associates, in 11 countries.
