Talking about mental wealth

Talking about money can be taboo for many. That's despite money often being on our minds, enmeshed in a host of emotions — good and bad.
If you've ever wondered why, an upcoming event is an opportunity to gain insight and even ask a few burning questions on your mind about your mental wealth.
Money on Your Mind, an event presented May 4 by Jewish Child and Family Service (JCFS) at the Asper Jewish Community Campus, offers the opportunity to hear from a world-renowned authority on the subject: Winnipeg's own, Dr. Moira Somers.

The author of Advice that Sticks: How to Give Financial Advice that People Will Follow and a soon-to-be-published book on the psychology of fraud, Stumbles, Snakes and Scandals: Understanding and Preventing Financial Misconduct, Somers is a clinical neuropsychologist specializing in financial psychology and founder of the practice Mind, Money and Meaning.
The two-hour event won't involve Somers talking about financial psychology so much as being an audience-guided discussion.
It's likely a lot of people are feeling stressed about money lately, says Alexis Wenzowski, chief operating officer at JCFS.
'We are always looking to offer programming on issues impacting individuals and a lot of people are losing sleep because of financial worries lately,' she says, noting the event was jointly conceived by JCFS's mental health and addiction services group and its Asper Empowerment Program.
The Asper program is a relatively new initiative at JCFS, funded by a $100,000 grant from the Asper family to provide services such as free tax return preparation, budgeting and employment development, while addressing other economic issues such as food security in the city's Jewish community.
'We recognized that financial stress ultimately causes disruption in family relationships … and so we were looking at how we could foster a serious conversation about how mental wellness intersects with financial wellness,' Wenzowski says.
It's a growing area of interest, including among wealthier families in North America who might at first glance have few money problems. Yet they, too, often face challenges dealing with the sometimes fiery emotions that arise around money.
'Financial psychology really cuts across all demographics,' says Somers, a sought-after speaker across North America, who also works with Blackwood Family Enterprise that provides financial services to families with successful businesses.
After all, we all share common biology, she adds.
'A lot of what goes on with financial well-being really does lie in the brain regarding our relationships to money and so we really have to get our heads straight before we can get our behaviour straight.'
Often, views about money are so deeply embedded in our psyche, we have difficulty recognizing them for what they are.
'A lot of the things we learn about money we learn when we're young, watching the grown-ups,' Somers says. 'And we're great observers, but we're lousy interpreters.'
As children, we can witness emotional conversations about money without entirely understanding what they're about and whether the ideas they convey about money are even healthy.
'Sometimes, money messages we learn aren't the right ones like 'money is bad,' or 'money is the most important thing,'' Somers says.
These black-and-white ideas about money often foster inflexible mindsets we carry into adulthood — buried deep within and yet insidiously impactful.
Consider the widely held notion that talking about money is taboo.
'If we hold this belief, then we might not negotiate our salary; we might not talk to our dates about what we believe is important in life and that can lead to showing up in marriage with all kinds of unspoken assumptions,' Somers says.
Recognizing and unpacking emotions underpinning money is a good first step toward dealing with financial challenges in a constructive way.
'For example, it's generally healthy to know how money is coming in and out of your life,' Somers says. 'That's being financially conscious.'
Yet many people don't look at their credit card statements 'or they have no idea how much it's costing them to live their life.'
That's not our fault entirely. We're hardwired to face what's in front of us and employ a bevy of mental constructs just to get us through the day. Trying to see the big picture might be too much to bear.
'Procrastination is the enemy of progress, but it can feel so good at the time to just kick that can down the road,' she adds.
Success toward better financial well-being can seem unattainable because finances and our emotions are so complex. Problems appear daunting and insurmountable.
So start small, Somers suggests. 'What is one small thing you can do that can get you closer to what it is that you're trying to accomplish that will make a difference?'
That can be as simple as reading a financial news article every day or having a regular conversation with someone you trust about money.

The event May 4, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., might be a good first step. Tickets are $18 — though if that's too rich for your budget, contact JCFS, which may be able to help you still attend, Wenzowski says.
'The event is meant to be open to everyone,' she adds.
'It's a chance to have an honest conversation with someone specializing in this area, where, hopefully, people can learn some skills to cope with money stress and ultimately feel more empowered.'

Milieu Market refills clean need

Wolseley's newest bar is self-serve. However, ales and stouts don't gush from its taps. Laundry detergent, dish soap and fabric softener flow out. Milieu Market opened its first Winnipeg storefront over August long weekend. It's a sharp turn from the United States expansion owner Jules Plett had envisioned. 'We needed to focus on staying in Canada,' Plett said, recalling early-2025 tariff threats from our southern neighbour. The store got its start in Steinbach four years ago, and this is the first Winnipeg location. Instead of unrolling her company's lotions and soaps in the U.S., she's filled dispensable jugs and stocked 992 Portage Ave. Free containers are stacked in one corner. One-gallon bottles of hand sanitizer gel and body wash sit on shelves near natural deodorants and skincare products. Plett, 28, began her refill business four years ago. She'd begun using refill stations while travelling in an effort to reduce waste; upon returning to Steinbach during the COVID-19 pandemic, she found her options limited. Milieu Market's first storefront appeared in Steinbach. It now has a refill station in Altona Mall. Wolseley holds the third shop, with spouts for household products protruding from a refill bar. 'I'm just excited to be here,' Plett said. U.S. President Donald Trump's warnings kept her focused on Canada; the spring closure of Planet Pantry, a similar business at The Forks, led her to see a gap in the Winnipeg market. (Another refill company, Refill Market, operates at 634 Notre Dame Ave.) Milieu Market sold wares at the Wolseley Farmers Market in past years. 'The people, the community in this area, they're just so passionate about what I'm doing,' Plett said. 'I want to be closest to where the customers are.' So when the 900-sq.-ft. space opened — with a kitchenette in the back for soap making — Plett leapt. Nearly all the items inside Milieu Market are Canadian-made. Plett launched her in-house brand, Greenland and Co., in 2022. She began selling Greenland and Co. shampoo and conditioner bars on Aug. 1, in part, because U.S. products have become too costly. 'Tariffs are bouncing on and off, but not for personal care,' Plett relayed. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS Plett aims to open more refill shops, or help others to do so, to help reduce waste and pass the savings on to customers. She'd been working with a formulator for roughly a year on shampoo and conditioner bars. She hadn't found a Canadian product she loved, she said, and the U.S. brand she stocks has since increased in price through Canadian counter-tariffs. What was a roughly $42 bar has jumped to a cost of $50. 'We didn't want to cut them from our line, but it did get really expensive,' Plett said, noting she hasn't added the full 25 per cent cost increase to the customer price. Prism Kombucha joins the local businesses represented within Milieu Market. It has its own refill station in a corner. 'We're excited to be part of Milieu Market,' said co-owner Colin Rémillard. 'It's an awesome way to have people consuming more kombucha… but it's also reducing packaging.' Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. Milieu Market is a welcome addition to the Portage Avenue strip, said Heidi Bao, an employee at neighbour business Brite Agencies. 'It makes more convenience for the community,' Bao said. Plett aims to open more refill shops — either her own or by helping others. 'Any way we can do that, that's definitely my goal,' she said. Conference boom keeps Manitoba convention facilities busy

As scores of events shift dates, Manitoba's fall conference season — already busy with the Grey Cup — has gotten busier. (Tony Nardella photo) His company EventCamp operates software that groups use for conference registrations and sponsorship fees. Several events have pushed their dates. Attendance sizes range from hundreds to upwards of 1,000 people, Dion relayed. Moving is a large undertaking: host organizations must negotiate with hotels, ensure new transport for guests is available, reschedule activities. Contracts might be broken; it can be costly. Finding new space is 'definitely a challenge,' Dion said. Both he and The Fort Garry Hotel's owner have clocked a general spike in events post-COVID-19 pandemic. Last year was The Fort Garry's best fall yet for event bookings, said Ida Albo. 'Does this year look better than last year? So far, it looks better,' Albo continued. Roughly six conferences on The Fort Garry's books required rescheduling this summer. Not all could be accommodated, Albo said, adding some have been penciled in for September, December and next year. 'Everyone — both from our side and from the customer side — worked really hard to try to rebook,' Albo said. '(We did it with) a complete understanding that the priority was to free up space, when it was possible, to house people that were being displaced.' The downtown hotel began housing wildfire evacuees in early June. The financial impact isn't yet fully known; evacuees are still on site. 'Something terrible happened, and we just do what we have to do to make things work,' Albo said. The number of conferences that have postponed their dates or switched to an online format hasn't been counted. Nearly 7,300 evacuees were in Manitoba hotels as of Thursday; 2,615 hotel rooms were booked. Last month, the Manitoba Hotel Association's president told the Free Press he expected most conferences would be having conversations with their venues. 'In the Winnipeg context, it was already a fairly busy fall,' Michael Juce said in a Thursday interview. 'This could add, (the) events being pushed back.' In November alone, the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg expects to see thousands of people. Some 2,500 delegates should amalgamate for The College of Family Physicians of Canada's Family Medicine Forum, happening Nov. 5 through 8. The RBC Convention Centre has hosted wildfire evacuees since July. There were 872 evacuees staying there Wednesday night. (Mikaela MacKenzie / Free Press files) The Canadian Football League's championship festival, the Grey Cup, will occur in Winnipeg from Nov. 10 to 16. The convention centre will house concerts and a gala dinner, likely drawing thousands of attendees. Another 1,600 people are slated to come for Indspire, a national gathering for Indigenous educators, Nov. 19 through 21. Four days later, the Association of Manitoba Municipalities' fall convention is scheduled to draw roughly 1,000. 'Everything that we have on the books… (was) booked years ago,' said David Chizda, the RBC Convention Centre's director of sales and business development. National conferences and regular events like Comiccon lead up to November. One convention — the Indigenous History and Heritage Gathering — has moved from June to March 2026 to accommodate wildfire evacuees, Chizda said. (The RBC Convention Centre has hosted evacuees since July. It held 872 evacuees Wednesday night.) 'Our team is booking '27, '28 and '29 right now,' Chizda said. 'I don't see future wildfires as a concern. 'If they happen, we will deal with it as we did this year, but we're just continuing to book as we always have.' Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. Dion will keep an eye on wildfire season trends. 'If I'm noticing after five years that July is forest fire season, then I would encourage the client to choose another month,' the event manager said. Conference attendees' spending spans accommodations, transport, restaurants and retailers, both Chizda and Juce noted. In its 2024 report, Tourism Winnipeg estimated 76 future events and conferences it attracted would generate at least $53.3 million in direct spending. Battery-electric buses finally ready to roll

Roughly six months after the city unveiled its first zero-emission bus, Winnipeggers will finally be able to start riding one. Winnipeg Transit announced Thursday its first 60-foot (18-metre) battery-electric bus will go into 'limited service' next week. The service received its first hydrogen fuel-cell battery-electric bus in February and initially expected to have some zero-emission buses operating in April. It now has eight fuel-cell battery-electric buses and eight battery-electric ones. 'We only have one room in our facility that's been retrofitted to do service and maintenance on … fuel cell buses,' she said. 'So, we can only basically work on them one at a time.' Cooke said the large number of buses Winnipeg Transit has received in the last year has put a lot of strain on its system. 'We're used to getting 30 buses a year. We've received 105 buses in the last six months or so,' she said. Cooke said it took extra time to get buses ready for service, which includes preparing fare boxes and radios, as well as training staff members. Charging infrastructure for electric buses and hydrogen fuelling options were already in place. The hydrogen fuel cell buses can drive up to 24 hours without refuelling, while the battery electric ones can drive for 10 to 15 hours without recharging. Cooke said Thursday a total of six green buses are 'ready to hit the streets.' 'We should be seeing the remainder of the buses, within the next two weeks or so, starting to get into limited service,' she said. Ruth Bonneville / Free Press Another 24 zero-emission buses are expected to arrive in early 2026. A news release notes the initial limited service period for zero-emission buses will last 30 days. During that time, they will run only weekdays during the peak morning and early afternoon rush hours. Cooke said easing the buses into broader service will allow the city to test the vehicles and address any bumps along the way. 'We want to make sure that we're operating them in hours that we have technicians on site, ready to go and respond if there's any problems,' she said. The bus unveiled Thursday will be the first 18-metre battery electric bus to operate in a Canadian city's fleet, Winnipeg Transit said. 'We are proud to be leading the charge … when it comes to sustainable transportation in the country,' Coun. Janice Lukes (Waverley West), chairwoman of council's public works committee, said. Another 24 zero-emission buses are expected to arrive in early 2026. Overall, Winnipeg Transit is slated to receive 90 zero-emission buses as part of a $280-million funding agreement between the city, province and Ottawa. A member of Parliament said the investment is key to reducing air pollution. 'All summer long, this has been the worst recorded air quality in the history of the City of Winnipeg (because of forest fire smoke). We all … have a responsibility to do our part to contribute towards the combating of climate change. This is a wonderful example of how we're doing that at the local level,' Ben Carr, MP for Winnipeg South Centre, said. Transit has been slow to add green buses to its fleet so far, after first testing out four leased electric buses in a pilot project from 2015 to 2018. City council voted earlier this year to return to buying only diesel buses after its tri-government funding deal wraps up. When asked if that decision will prevent the city from reaching its goal to switch the entire Winnipeg Transit fleet to zero-emission models by 2045, Mayor Scott Gillingham said new senior government funding could still make that possible. 'The cost of the zero-emission buses is substantially more than a diesel bus … So, we as a city, would need assistance from the federal and provincial governments to be partners once again … to procure more zero-emission buses in the future,' he said. Cooke said earlier this year that a 12-metre diesel bus cost around $900,000, while the city will pay about $1.56 million for each electric bus of the same size and $1.9 million per fuel-cell version. Winnipeg Transit now has about 640 buses, its website states. The chairperson of the city's climate action and resilience committee said he's concerned green buses and other environmental initiatives aren't being deemed as urgent as other city priorities. 'It does seem to be a frustrating pattern here, that we don't seem to be able to get these environmental initiatives up and running,' Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) said. As an example, Mayes noted the city now expects a long-awaited plan to convert potent landfill gases into renewable energy, if council approves it, won't be implemented until at least 2028, instead of a previous 2026 target. 'I'd like to see some more priority (given to environmental projects) or at least, let's pick up the pace.'
