On Sunday, the city reported two Covid-19 deaths—a 14-year-old girl with kidney disease and a 59-year-old woman with cancer—at civic-run KEM Hospital, Parel.
Health officials maintained the patients died due to their preexisting conditions.
Mumbai has seen a rise in Covid cases in May, with 177 of the city's 183 total cases for the year reported this month. Some patients were admitted at Seven Hills Hospital, Marol, for isolation, but none are critical.
Meanwhile, neighbouring Thane city has reported 10 Covid-19 patients in the last three days. "They have mild symptoms and are being treated at home," said Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao.

Mumbai: City health authorities revised the Covid-19 death toll in the recent surge from two to three, following the delayed reporting of an earlier fatality.
"It was an old death that is reported now," said BMC's executive health officer, Dr Daksha Shah.

Govt planning to set up organ retrieval centres at MCHs
Bhubaneswar: Odisha govt has decided to set up non-transplant organ retrieval centres at medical colleges and hospitals (MCH)s, Umakant Satapathy, nodal officer for organ transplant and additional director of medical education and training (DMET), said on Monday. Among state-run hospitals, only SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, has this facility. "After the brain stem death of a person, a team from SCB will visit the MCH immediately, and with the help of the concerned MCH doctors, organs will be retrieved from the brain-dead patient. Later, they can be transplanted at SCB and other hospitals. The organ retrieval centres will immensely help us to get organs from deceased donors," Satapathy said. He said the govt is prepared to start heart transplant at SCB soon. "This type of transplantation is not a scheduled event like a planned surgery. Screening for heart transplantation is ongoing. We will conduct the transplant whenever we get a deceased donor and an eligible receiver," he added. The govt signed an MoU with a Chennai-based hospital on Oct 23 last year to start heart transplant at SCB. On July 31, Orissa high court had directed the govt to take urgent steps to resume liver transplant at SCB, which was stopped in April following the expiry of the MoU with a Hyderabad-based institute. The court also sought a report from the govt regarding proper functioning of bone marrow transplant (BMT) procedures. Satapathy said the govt will follow the high court order and soon resume liver transplant at SCB. "The earlier agency from Hyderabad, whose agreement ended a few months ago, is not showing interest in another MoU to continue the liver transplant activities at SCB. The govt is exploring other ways, like roping in an experienced hospital in Chennai, to resume the transplant work," he added. Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Tuesday issued key directions to the state govt on three separate public interest litigations concerning public safety, welfare, and infrastructure. A bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin directed the state to submit, within two weeks, details of measures being taken to safeguard the Kaleshwaram irrigation project and protect people from potential flood-related disasters during the ongoing monsoon. The bench was hearing a 2020 PIL filed by Cheruku Sudhakar and another petitioner, initially focused on remedial measures under the Disaster Management Act during the heavy rains and floods of that year. Counsel Chikkudu Prabhakar recently filed a memo seeking similar safeguards for Kaleshwaram, citing the National Dam Safety Authority's report and earlier court directives. PMC launches campaign to control stray dog population amid rising bite cases
1 2 Prayagraj: The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a largescale campaign to sterilise the city's over 1.13 lakh stray canine population amid increasing dog bite cases. The action follows a National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP) data that showed a staggering 1,98,964 people were bitten by dogs in the city over the last two years. Of these, 58,948 were reported in 2023 and a whopping 1,40,016 in 2024, showing a concerning surge. In 2023, dog scratches accounted for 31,237 cases, 24,152 victims suffered bleeding injuries and 3,559 were severely wounded. In 2024, the numbers grew more alarming with 33,258 people getting scratched, 97,893 sustaining bleeding injuries and 8,865 seriously injured. February 2024 alone recorded 2,800 serious dog bite injuries, the highest in any month. The rising number of incidents has highlighted the challenge of managing stray dog populations. To handle the situation, the PMC is setting up an animal birth control (ABC) centre in Shams Nagar Kareli (Haddigodam) where sterilisation and vaccination procedures would begin this month. The facility can sterilise up to 32 dogs per day. In addition, a largescale vaccination and sterilisation campaign has been launched, with the tendering process already underway. Dr Vijay Amritraj, veterinary and welfare officer of PMC, said the centre has the capacity to house 200 to 250 dogs at a time. "Currently, Prayagraj has an estimated 1.13 lakh stray dogs, out of which only 4,540 have undergone vaccination and sterilisation. The city has also completed construction of two dog shelter homes, which are set to be operated by specialised agencies chosen through a tender process," said the official. Authorities have assured that laws that prevent cruelty towards animals will be strictly followed in these facilities, he added. Sources at PMC said catching stray dogs is no easy task, with municipal teams often facing resistance from locals and animal welfare groups. These confrontations have made it difficult for municipal corporation to efficiently carry out sterilisation and relocation drives. But now efforts are in full swing to ensure the safety of the city residents while maintaining ethical treatment of animals.
