Crypto Week Is Here. Should You Buy MicroStrategy Stock?

MicroStrategy (MSTR) shares closed higher on Monday following SEC filings that confirmed the Virginia-headquartered firm has loaded up on another 4,225 Bitcoin (BTCUSD).
MSTR spent nearly $43 billion to increase its overall BTC holdings to 601,550 between July 7 and July 13. The Bitcoin-proxy made the purchase using proceeds from at-the-market offerings.

MicroStrategy stock has been in a sharp uptrend over the past three months, and is currently up some 96% versus its year-to-date low.
MSTR shares are inching up also because U.S. lawmakers are set to debate three major pro-crypto bills: the CLARITY Act, the GENIUS Act, and the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act between July 14 and July 18.
The so-called 'crypto week' in the House of Representavies may prove a major tailwind for MicroStrategy as it could legitimize cryptocurrencies, potentially attracting institutional capital and reinforcing the company's BTC-centric strategy.
Investors' optimism is already being reflected in the price of Bitcoin that rallied past $120,000 on Monday – momentum that may soon translate into further upside for MicroStrategy stock.
BTIG analysts are convinced that MicroStrategy shares have more room to the upside despite their monster rally since the first week of April.
According to the investment firm, the annual 'Strategy World' conference showcased the firm's deep commitment to BTC and shareholder value creation.
Additionally, it sees untapped upside in MicroStrategy's fixed-income instruments STRK and STRF, which could further enhance equity value through financial engineering.
In its latest research note, BTIG explained that the market is underestimating the strategic potential of MicroStrategy's debt and investment vehicles as well.
Its analysts expect MSTR stock to hit $620 over the next few months as MicroStrategy is no longer just a software firm, but a Bitcoin-native financial entity with asymmetric upside.
Investors could take heart in the fact that, much like BTIG, the majority of other Wall Street firms also believe it's not yet too late to invest in MicroStrategy stock.
The consensus rating on MSTR shares currently sits at 'Strong Buy' with the mean target of $535 indicating potential upside of another 19% from current levels.

OpenAI releases lower-cost models to rival Meta, Mistral and DeepSeek

OpenAI on Tuesday released two open-weight language models for the first time since it rolled out GPT-2 in 2019. The text-only models are called gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, and are designed to serve as lower-cost options that developers, researchers and companies can easily run and customize, OpenAI said. An artificial intelligence model is considered open weight if its parameters, or the elements that improve its outputs and predictions during training, are publicly available. Open-weight models can offer transparency and control, but they are different from open-source models, whose full source code becomes available for people to use and modify. Several other tech companies, including Meta, Microsoft-backed Mistral AI and the Chinese startup DeepSeek, have also released open-weight models in recent years. "It's been exciting to see an ecosystem develop, and we are excited to contribute to that and really push the frontier and then see what happens from there," OpenAI President Greg Brockman told reporters during a briefing. The company collaborated with Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Cerebras, and Groq to ensure the models will work well on a variety of chips. "OpenAI showed the world what could be built on Nvidia AI — and now they're advancing innovation in open-source software," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. The release of OpenAI's open weight models has been highly anticipated, in part because the company repeatedly delayed the launch. In a post on X in July, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company needed more time to "run additional safety tests and review high-risk areas." That came after a separate post weeks earlier, where Altman said the models would not be released in June. OpenAI said Tuesday that it carried out extensive safety training and testing on its open-weight models. It filtered out harmful chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear data during pre-training, and it mimicked how bad actors could try to fine-tune the models for malicious purposes. Through this testing, OpenAI said it determined that maliciously fine-tuned models were not able to reach the "high capability" threshold in its Preparedness Framework, which is its method for measuring and protecting against harm. The company also worked with three independent expert groups who provided feedback on its malicious fine-tuning evaluation, OpenAI said. OpenAI said people can download the weights for gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b on platforms like Hugging Face and GitHub under an Apache 2.0 license. The models will be available to run on PCs through programs such as LM Studio and Ollama. Cloud providers Amazon, Baseten and Microsoft are also making the models available. Both models can handle advanced reasoning, tool use and chain‑of‑thought processing, and are designed to run anywhere — from consumer hardware to the cloud to on-device applications. Users can run gpt-oss-20b on a laptop, for instance, and use it as a personal assistant that can search through files and write, OpenAI said. "We're excited to make this model, the result of billions of dollars of research, available to the world to get AI into the hands of the most people possible," Altman said in a statement Tuesday.

Bitcoin Recovery at Risk Amid Macro Headwinds

Bitcoin's slow strut over the weekend has partially undone last week's losses, but analysts remain cautious. While the top crypto is up 1.5% from Saturday's low of $112,692, its recovery may be short-lived due to mounting headwinds, and a sharp reversal is possible, according to experts Decrypt spoke to on Monday. The first major headwind is an overexposed US equity market. Nomura data shows that Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA) positions are at 110% long equity exposure—a level not seen in four years. This has driven "market momentum," as Han Qin, CEO of tokenized investment platform Jarsy, told Decrypt, but he adds that this also makes the market "more vulnerable to sharp reversals." A broad equity pullback triggered by CTA deleveraging could cause risk assets, including Bitcoin, to face short-term pressure. This pressure from traditional markets is coupled with sustained selling from within the crypto space itself. Sean Dawson, head of research at on-chain options platform Derive, toldDecrypt that options traders are bracing for a pullback, targeting $100,000 to $80,000 puts. These traders are expecting a price reversal of somewhere between 10% and 30% over the next month. The outlook is made even more sensitive by recent macroeconomic data. The downward revisions of the Nonfarm Payrolls for May and June by 258,000 have put the market on edge. A Period of "Chopsolidation" Amidst these bearish signals, not everyone anticipates a dramatic crash. Maarten Regterschot, a CryptoQuant analyst, told Decrypt that he doesn't expect Bitcoin to break below $112,000. Instead, he anticipates a period of "chopsolidation" following the recent short-term holder selling spree, suggesting a period of sideways trading is more likely than a full-blown price collapse. While some analysts are hinting at a more aggressive Fed pivot, that potential catalyst is still months away. "Fed pivot is coming," said Fundstrat Capital CIO Tom Lee in a tweet, acknowledging the severity of the downward revisions to jobs data. This sentiment is echoed by Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group, who told Fortune that there "might be a 50-basis-point" rate cut. Crypto Rises Alongside Stocks as Fed Pivot Bets Build

U.S. stocks rebounded Monday, lifting risk assets broadly, including crypto. But analysts remain cautious, citing persistent macroeconomic uncertainty and growing signs of excess across markets. The tech-led rally saw the Nasdaq and Russel 2000 indexes jump 1.84% and 2.35%, respectively. Bitcoin, on the other hand, saw a modest uptick of 0.74%, according to CoinGecko data. Market gains tracked a sharp shift in sentiment following a 258,000 downward revision to May and June jobs data, fueling expectations of a Federal Reserve pivot. The probability of a 25 basis point rate cut in September has surged to over 90%, up from 63.1% a week earlier, according to the CME's FedWatch Tool. 'The bounce today looks fairly machine-driven,' Jake Ostrovskis, Wintermute's OTC trader, told Decrypt. He warns there are 'plenty of signs of froth' and 'high levels of risk taking' in both the traditional finance and crypto markets. The main challenge to the market's rebound is that the U.S.-focused issues behind last week's selloff remain unresolved. President Donald Trump's abrupt dismissal of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer has done little to ease macroeconomic uncertainty. The move, seen by some as political interference, has added to investor unease amid ongoing tariff tensions and policy unpredictability. Options contracts for Bitcoin are reflecting that outlook with "put demand" seen in the $105,000 to $110,000 range, Ostrovskis said. He added that investors are positioning for downside protection rather than speculating on a correction. Regardless, the uptick in uncertainty amid soaring U.S. stocks, high levels of CTA exposure, and the crowded short U.S. dollar trade are all signs that could signal a correction. Ostrovskis cautioned that "these levels of risk taking can often go on for a while," and warned that if the U.S. stock market "rolls over, crypto will follow suit."
