Surge protectors help prevent damage to electronics such as computers and televisions by blocking excess power when power is restored. The good news about these devices is that they have a limited lifespan and can be replaced every 3-5 years. UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLIES
Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) help provide backup power during an outage. This helps with minimising the risk of data loss and safely shuts down devices, according to Tech.
According to Jasonwrightelectric, Generators can be toxic if not used properly. It is advisable to use a generator outdoors. They must be at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, and windows. Use extensions that are heavy-duty, outdoor-rated, and in good condition.

Warm weather expected in Gauteng with fire risks

Gauteng will experience warm conditions tomorrow, 22 August, although motorists are urged to remain cautious due to early morning fog patches. The South African Weather Service has warned of possible runaway veld fires in the province's northeastern areas. Forecaster Phemelo Zonke confirmed that most of Gauteng will see clear skies and warm conditions. Johannesburg is expected to reach a maximum of 28°C, with Pretoria peaking at 29°C. 'Warm conditions are forecast across the province, with highs of up to 34°C in Musina,' Zonke said. Overnight, Johannesburg can expect lows of around 11°C. Despite the chilly start, daytime conditions will remain warm and sunny. Motorists travelling early tomorrow morning should exercise caution due to reduced visibility from fog, especially along the eastern escarpment. Zonke urged drivers to remain alert. 'Fog patches are expected to reduce visibility to less than a kilometre in some places, so drivers must maintain safe following distances,' she advised. The weather service also raised concerns about high fire danger in Gauteng's northeast. Zonke warned that strong winds could worsen the risk. 'Runaway veld fires are possible overnight, particularly in the northeastern areas, and residents must avoid open flames,' she cautioned. Hot weather expected in KwaZulu-Natal with coastal showers

KwaZulu-Natal will see partly cloudy conditions with scattered showers along the coastal regions, while inland areas remain warm. The South African Weather Service has issued a marine warning for rough seas, with damaging waves posing navigation difficulties. According to forecaster Phemelo Zonke, rain will persist along the coastline, stretching into the interior. 'Isolated showers are expected over Durban, East London, and Port St. Johns, with maximum temperatures around 22°C,' Zonke explained. Despite occasional showers, much of the interior will experience mild to warm weather. Zonke highlighted that damaging waves could impact navigation along KZN's coastline. 'Damaging waves are forecast along the southern coastal regions, making navigation difficult at sea,' he said. The weather warning comes as the cold front pushes strong north-westerly winds into the southern oceans. Despite the rain along the coast, KZN's interior faces fire concerns due to dry and windy conditions. Zonke urged vigilance, stating: 'High fire danger conditions remain in the northeastern parts of the province, where runaway veld fires are possible.' Residents are advised to remain cautious near open fields and avoid activities that may ignite fires, while coastal communities must prepare for unsettled sea conditions.
