'Didn't Die An Ordinary Death': Pahalgam Victim's Kin Seek Martyr Status Ahead Of PM Modi's Visit

Shubham Dwivedi, 31, was killed by terrorists on April 22 and his family says he should be recognised as a martyr for his courage and sacrifice
'He took the first bullet, but saved many lives. He stood fearlessly before the dreaded terrorists and didn't hesitate to reveal his identity. 'I am a proud Hindu,' he said, and the next moment, they shot him. He didn't die an ordinary death," said Sanjay Dwivedi, the father of 31-year-old Shubham Dwivedi, who was killed in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on May 30, the family of the 31-year-old is clinging to the hope that their son will be recognised as a martyr for his courage and sacrifice.
Sitting in their modest Kanpur home, Sanjay Dwivedi, a retired schoolteacher, recalls the horrifying details shared with the family by eyewitnesses. 'Shubham did not try to run. He faced the terrorists. He stood in front of them and said, 'I am a Hindu.' And he was shot point-blank in the head. That courage is not ordinary — it is heroic," he said.
The family believes Shubham's defiance and composure in the face of death allowed others to survive. 'His presence of mind gave others a few seconds to escape the area. Those seconds saved lives. We just want his sacrifice to be remembered by the country. That is all we ask for," Shubham's father told News18.
The Dwivedis say they have only one demand from the government. 'The country should give him the honour of a martyr. That is not just for us, but for every Indian who believes in dharm, in courage, and in standing for what is right," said Sanjay.
Shubham had married just weeks earlier on February 12 and was on vacation in the picturesque Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam with his wife and her sister when terrorists opened fire on tourists. Shubham was killed on the spot after being shot in the head.
His wife, Aishanya Dwivedi, has since been inconsolable. 'I only have one hope now that my husband is given the status of a martyr. It would mean everything to me," she said.
Family's Request Routed Through Kanpur MP
The Dwivedi family first conveyed their wish to meet the prime minister to Kanpur MP Ramesh Awasthi, who responded immediately. 'We requested our parliamentarian and he not only supported us but also sent an official letter to the Prime Minister's Office," said a family member.
Though no official confirmation has arrived yet, reports suggest the PM may meet the Dwivedi family during his Kanpur visit on May 30. 'Just the possibility has given us some hope and strength," the family said.
A Targeted Attack on Identity
The April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam claimed 26 lives, including that of a Nepali tourist. Shubham's family maintains that he was targeted for being a Hindu.
'Our son wasn't caught in random violence," a family member said. 'He was targeted for his faith. And he did not hide it — he embraced it, even in front of terrorists. That is the spirit of Bharat."
Operation Sindoor Brings Some Closure
The government's military response to the Pahalgam killings, Operation Sindoor, was launched on May 7 and targeted terror infrastructure across the Line of Control in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The family called it a step that 'brought peace to Shubham's soul."
MP Ramesh Awasthi, in his letter to the PMO, also mentioned the family's gratitude for the operation.
Shubham was cremated with full state honours in his native village on April 24. The cremation was attended by Uttar Pradesh ministers Yogendra Upadhyay and Rakesh Sachan. Later, chief minister Yogi Adityanath personally visited the family and assured them of 'every possible support." On April 30, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met the family and expressed support for their demand to recognise Shubham as a martyr, making it a rare instance where grief united political leaders across party lines.
Awaiting National Recognition
Despite overwhelming local and political support, the family is clear that their final hope rests with PM Modi. 'We have faith in our prime minister," Sanjay Dwivedi said. 'He understands the pain of families like ours. We are not asking for money. We are asking for samman—honour for our son who gave his life for others."
As the date of the prime minister's visit nears, the Dwivedis await a moment they hope will transform personal tragedy into national remembrance.
'We haven't received official confirmation, but media reports say the PM is coming to Kanpur. We're hopeful. If he recognises Shubham's sacrifice, it won't just honour our family — it will honour courage itself."

India-EU free trade pact could be concluded before year end: Piyush Goyal

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday said that negotiations for the proposed comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU) are progressing at a rapid pace and the deal could be concluded before the year end. He also said that India will raise its concerns over certain EU's regulations such as carbon tax and deforestation rules in the trade talks. "We have certain concerns about EU practices and regulations, likewise they have certain areas which they would like to discuss. All issues are on the table and we will negotiate a fair, balanced and equitable FTA," Goyal told reporters here. He added that all of these issues will come up for discussions, so that both sides can come up with a robust agreement that will support market access and promote easier trade. The minister is here for a two-day visit. He will meet French leaders and business representatives to promote trade and investments between the two countries. When asked about the expected timeline for conclusion of talks on the FTA, he said: "We never had a deadlines for a FTA, but looking at the rapid progress that we (India and the EU) are making, my sense is that we could do it faster than the year end". He said that there are not too many issues where both sides have divergence of opinions. "We have both complimentary economies. In most cases what is of offensive interest to India does not hurt the EU economy, likewise goods and services that Europe would like to provide to India only support our growth story," he said. However, the minister added that in any trading relationship, there are certain sensitive issues on both sides, "which is what we have to resolve amicably". Further, he said that India does not shy away from discussing issues pertaining to gender and sustainability in such trade pacts. "We will off course have a comprehensive FTA covering all subjects of mutual interest... Subject like gender, India bats on the front foot, and when it comes to subjects like sustainability, India is right at the fore front. India does not shy from any subject for discussions," Goyal said. Goyal will hold a bilateral meeting with EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Marcos Sefcovic on June 2 on the agreement. There are discussions for an early harvest or an interim trade agreement between the two sides that could include issues like intellectual property rights (IPRs), government procurement, tariffs, and non-tariff barriers. Besides demanding significant duty cuts in automobiles and medical devices, the EU wants tax reduction in products like wines, spirits, meat, poultry and a strong intellectual property regime. Indian goods exports to the EU, such as ready-made garments, pharmaceuticals, steel, petroleum products, and electrical machinery, can become more competitive if the pact is concluded successfully. In June 2022, India and the 27-nation EU bloc resumed negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement, an investment protection agreement and a pact on geographical indications (GIs) after a gap of over eight years. The negotiations stalled in 2013 due to differences over the level of opening up of the markets. On February 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the European Commission President agreed to seal a much-awaited free trade deal by the end of this year. The India-EU trade pact negotiations cover 23 policy areas or chapters, including Trade in Goods, Trade in Services, Investment, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, Technical Barriers to Trade, Trade Remedies, Rules of Origin, Customs and Trade Facilitation, Competition, Trade Defence, Government Procurement, Dispute Settlement, Intellectual Property Rights, Geographical Indications, and Sustainable Development. India's bilateral trade in goods with the EU was $137.41 billion in 2023-24 (exports worth $75.92 billion and imports worth $61.48 billion), making it the largest trading partner for goods. The EU market accounts for about 17 per cent of India's total exports, while the EU's exports to India make up 9 per cent of its total overseas shipments. In addition, the bilateral trade in services, in 2023, between India and the EU was estimated at $51.45 billion. Dispute settlement system Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday said that finalising and restoring a dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) quickly is important to maintain the core philosophy of the Geneva-based multi-lateral body. He said that a mini-ministerial meeting of the WTO will be held on June 3 where trade ministers of all the major economies would discuss ways to strengthen the multilateral trading systems, WTO reforms, and work towards open and expansive international trade. "It is very important that we finalise and restore a dispute resolution mechanism quickly so that the principles of the WTO can be adjudicated upon and justice can be delivered," he told reporters here. Total Energies investment Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday held a meeting with Total Energies CEO Patrick Pouyanne and discussed the company's investment plans for India. Goyal is here for a three-day visit. "Met Mr. Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman & CEO of @TotalEnergies. Discussed the company's investment plans for India and avenues for deeper collaboration in the renewable energy sector," Goyal said in a post on X. Op Sindoor inspired by Ahilyabai's principles of self-defence: Yogi

Lucknow: Chief Minister on Sunday said that India's strong retaliation to through was inspired by the principles of self-defence espoused by Maratha ruler Ahilyabai Holkar while protecting the nation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "When under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the brave Indian jawans destroyed the air defence system of Pakistan through Operation Sindoor and compelled the enemy to bow, it was inspired by the actions and principles of self-defence that the Lokmata Ahilyabai espoused during her reign," Yogi said, addressing a programme held in Agra to mark the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled the Malwa region in the 18th century. "Our armed forces strike back with strength, as seen in surgical and air strikes against terrorism. When Pakistan supports terrorists, our country responds across the border. Our air force even destroyed their air defence system," he said. "The BJP-led double-engine govt is following the path of good governance shown by her (Ahilyabai) in carrying out development and public welfare works, various women empowerment schemes and restoration of temples in Uttar Pradesh," he said. "During the Mughal period, when foreign invaders destroyed and corrupted the symbols of India's identity and faith, especially the temples, Devi Ahilyabai did the great work of their revival two and a half centuries ago," he said. Yogi added that when a society takes inspiration from its national icons, no force can become an obstacle in its path. "Her work for women, craftsmen, artisans, farmers, youth and the cultural heritage of India is unforgettable. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now She renovated many religious places including Puri's Jagannath Temple, Gaya Temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Kedarnath Dham, Mahakal Temple, Omkareshwar Temple, Somnath Temple, Bhimashankar Temple and Rameswaram Temple with her personal funds instead of using state assets," he said. Hitting out at the previous govt, Yogi said that earlier some people used to nurture mafias which created problems for law and order. "Some people used to change the name of the degree college built in her (Holkar's) name, but we are honouring her legacy," he said, adding that she lived for only 70 years, but her personality continued to guide and inspire the people. "As a mark of respect, a medical college in Auraiya has been named after Ahilyabai," he said. He praised Devi Ahilyabai's contributions to women and handloom artisans, noting how she brought global recognition to Mahishmati sarees — on the lines of Banarasi sarees.

TMC enters Kerala politics, fields PV Anvar in Nilambur by-election

New Delhi: The Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday announced its debut electoral foray into Kerala by deciding to contest the upcoming by-election in Nilambur, an Assembly constituency under the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat currently held by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The by-election, scheduled for later this month, was necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA PV Anvar, a Left-backed independent who stepped down after falling out with chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Anvar has since joined TMC and has been appointed its state convenor. On Sunday, he formally declared his candidacy, positioning himself as a potential game-changer in a high-stakes battle between the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) ahead of next year's state election. Nilambur, part of Malappuram district, is one of seven Assembly segments within the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, which spans across Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts. Anvar, 58, comes from a family with deep roots in the Congress and ties to the Indian freedom movement. Over his political career, he has been affiliated with the Congress, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and the Left before aligning with TMC. A businessman-politician known for his maverick style, Anvar has long worked to cultivate Nilambur as his personal political stronghold, leveraging his local influence to sway the contest between UDF and LDF. The constituency is demographically diverse, with significant Muslim, Hindu, and Christian populations.
