TMC enters Kerala politics, fields PV Anvar in Nilambur by-election
New Delhi: The Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday announced its debut electoral foray into Kerala by deciding to contest the upcoming by-election in Nilambur, an Assembly constituency under the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat currently held by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The by-election, scheduled for later this month, was necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA PV Anvar, a Left-backed independent who stepped down after falling out with chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Anvar has since joined TMC and has been appointed its state convenor. On Sunday, he formally declared his candidacy, positioning himself as a potential game-changer in a high-stakes battle between the CPI(M)-led
Left Democratic Front
(LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) ahead of next year's state election.
Nilambur, part of Malappuram district, is one of seven Assembly segments within the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, which spans across Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts. Anvar, 58, comes from a family with deep roots in the Congress and ties to the Indian freedom movement. Over his political career, he has been affiliated with the Congress, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and the Left before aligning with TMC. A businessman-politician known for his maverick style, Anvar has long worked to cultivate Nilambur as his personal political stronghold, leveraging his local influence to sway the contest between UDF and LDF. The constituency is demographically diverse, with significant Muslim, Hindu, and Christian populations.

With Anvar as its face in Kerala, TMC's entry into the state is being closely watched-especially in light of its uneasy relationship with the Congress.

Pakistan Admits Wider Damage From India's Operation Sindoor, Dossier Reveals 8 More Targets
India's 'Operation Sindoor' caused more damage to Pakistan than initially revealed, impacting eight additional locations, a Pakistan dossier has revealed. Pakistan has admitted it suffered more damage than it earlier acknowledged, during India's 'Operation Sindoor' on the intervening night of May 6 and 7. According to a confidential Pakistani dossier on its internal military Operation 'Bunyan un Marsoos', at least eight more of its locations suffered damage in the Indian strikes. A map in the dossier shows Indian strikes in Pakistan damaged structures in Peshawar, Jhang, Hyderabad in Sindh, Gujrat in Punjab, Gujranwala, Bhawalnagar, Attock, and Chor, on the intervening night of May 9 and 10. The mentioned eight locations were not mentioned by the Indian Armed Forces during the press briefings held after the May 7 counteroffensive. Another map revealed locations struck by India on the intervening night of May 7 and 8. On May 10, nearly three days after India launched 'Operation Sindoor' against terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), the Shehbaz Sharif-led country extended a call for a ceasefire to India. A couple of days after the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, satellite images captured by Maxar Technologies revealed significant damage to four air bases in Pakistan – Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi, PAF Base Mushaf in Sargodha, Bholari Air Base, and PAF Base Shahbaz in Jacobabad. More than 100 terrorists, taking shelter in Pakistan, were also killed in the Indian operation. The operation was launched to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which was later claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba. The attack resulted in the killing of 26 tourists. Survivors later said the terrorists had asked them about their faith, and shot dead those who said they were non-Muslims. The terrorists also asked the tourists to recite a ' Kalma ' (an Islamic phrase) to confirm if they were non-Muslims, before shooting them point-blank. After IWT abeyance, Pak weaving threat narrative of ‘what if China stops Brahmaputra flow': Himanta
In an X post titled 'What If China Stops Brahmaputra Water to India? A Response to Pakistan's New Scare Narrative', he said, 'After India decisively moved away from the outdated Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan is now spinning another manufactured threat: What if China stops the Brahmaputra's water to India?' 'Let's dismantle this myth — not with fear, but with facts and national clarity,' he added. He clarified that though China has not announced any such move, but even if it happens, it would in fact help mitigate the annual Assam floods. He said that most of Brahmaputra's flow is generated due to downpour in northeast India while glacial melt and limited Tibetan rainfall contribute to only 30-35 per cent of the river's water flow. Guwahati, Jun 3 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that after India put the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) in abeyance, Pakistan is weaving a new 'manufactured threat' narrative of what will happen if China stops Brahmaputra's flow into the country. Sarma pointed out that even if China were to 'reduce water flow (unlikely as China has never threatened or indicated in any official forum), it may actually help India mitigate the annual floods in Assam, which displace lakhs and destroy livelihoods every year'. 'Meanwhile, Pakistan, which has exploited 74 years of preferential water access under the Indus Water Treaty, now panics as India rightfully reclaims its sovereign rights,' he said. Sarma claimed that Brahmaputra is a river that grows in India and does not shrink. He pointed out that China contributes only 30-35 per cent of the Brahmaputra's total flow — mostly through glacial melt and limited Tibetan rainfall. The remaining 65-70 per cent is 'generated within India, thanks to the torrential monsoon rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya'. Major tributaries like Subansiri, Lohit, Kameng, Manas, Dhansiri, Jia-Bharali, Kopili also contribute to it while additional inflow comes in from the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia Hills via rivers such as Krishnai, Digaru, and Kulsi, Sarma said. 'At the India-China border (Tuting), the flow of the river is ~2,000-3,000 m³/s while in the plains of Assam like Guwahati, the flow swells to 15,000-20,000 m³/s during monsoon,' he added. The Brahmaputra is not a river India depends on upstream — it is a rain-fed Indian river system, strengthened after entering Indian territory, Sarma said. 'Brahmaputra is not controlled by a single source — it is powered by our geography, our monsoon, and our civilisational resilience,' he added. BJP MP Alok Sharma accuses Bhopal's Muslim gym trainers of ‘love jihad', fuelling Bajrang Dal's campaign
Speaking to the media Sunday, Sharma said, 'There are many gyms in Bhopal and we are also preparing a list where the trainers are allegedly Muslims. There should be women trainers too.' Sharma's statement came just days after members of the Bajrang Dal visited gyms in Bhopal's Ayodhya Nagar locality, searching for Muslim trainers. They later submitted a memorandum to the Ayodhya Nagar Police Station, alleging that Muslim trainers in the city's gyms are involved in 'love jihad'. Bhopal: Alok Sharma, BJP MP from Bhopal, has stirred controversy once again by stating that a list of gyms employing Muslim trainers is being compiled and will soon be submitted to the police. 'We are making a list and will be submitting it to the police. The police will do their work, the law will do its job and in Madhya Pradesh there is Dr Mohan Yadav's government and no one has the permission to indulge in love jihad or land jihad. The law will take stringent action against such people. This is all I want to say,' added Sharma, elected as MP in 2024. He has previously served as the mayor of Bhopal and is known for his hardliner image. Last month, Sharma had demanded that the government sterilise those accused of 'love jihad'. In January this year, he proposed exploring Bhopal's iconic lake in search of remnants of a Vedic city he believes lies submerged beneath it. He made this suggestion during a meeting at Delhi's Sansad Bhawan, held to assess the heritage potential of cities for conservation efforts. In the past, Sharma has called for enforcing a uniform 10 pm closing time for all shops across Bhopal. He noted that while commercial areas like New Market and Sarafa adhered to the deadline, several parts of old Bhopal, like Qazi Camp and Laxmi Theatre area, remained open until midnight. The areas pointed out by Sharma are dominated by Muslim community. Sharma also claimed that the late-night markets were 'spoiling children'. Also read: MP CM transfers 3 senior cops after chaos at Modi's inauguration of Datia airport. Here's what happened Muslim gym trainers face heat The crackdown on gym trainers in Bhopal began after a Muslim man, identified as Mohsin Khan, was booked by Indore Police on charges of sexual misconduct. Khan, who runs a private shooting range in Indore, was booked along with two others following allegations by a minor girl accusing them of rape, cheating, and molestation. According to the minor, she began working at Khan's house during the pandemic. She alleged that she was raped, shown obscene videos, and held captive for about 15 days. Last week, members of the Bajrang Dal visited several gyms in Bhopal, asking those working out to disclose their names and identities. Later that day, they submitted a memorandum to the police, demanding action against 'outsiders' who, they alleged, entered the city posing as Hindu men to befriend Hindu women as part of a 'love jihad' campaign. Following reports of these visits, Sub-Inspector Dinesh Sharma was deployed to monitor the situation and ensure there was no law-and-order issue. However, a video later surfaced showing the sub-inspector sitting with Bajrang Dal members, saying that Muslims should neither be hired as gym trainers nor be allowed in as clients. After the video came to light, he was transferred from the police station and attached to the reserve force. Speaking to The Print, Mahesh Lilhare, State House Office at Ayodhya Nagar, said, 'After the video came to our knowledge, an inquiry was initiated. As of now, Dinesh Sharma has denied making any such remarks and the authenticity of the video is under investigation.'
