Austria's OMV finds chloride contamination in Azeri crude
Organic chloride contamination in Azeri BTC crude cargoes was discovered last week, sending price differentials to a four-year low and causing several days' delays to loadings from Turkey's BTC Ceyhan terminal.
In its statement on Friday, OMV said the contaminated crude had been discovered through its quality control procedures. It said it had not reached its refineries, and there had been no disruption of its refining operations or of its supply of fuel to the market.
OMV said it had worked to secure alternative crude from other sources to "ensure continuity and security of fuels supply," but it did not clarify what it planned to do with the contaminated Azeri crude.
Organic chlorides are used in the industry to boost extraction from oilfields by cleaning oil wells and to accelerate the flow of crude, but the compounds must be removed before oil enters pipelines.
In large concentrations, they can pose risks to refinery equipment, OMV said.
Italy's Eni told Reuters last week that it had detected organic chloride contamination in oil already in its systems.

Maurel & Prom's half-year core profit drops by 25% on lower oil prices
Aug 5 (Reuters) - French oil group Maurel & Prom ( opens new tab reported a 25% drop in its half-year core profit on Tuesday, hit by falling crude oil prices. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell to $140 million in the six-month period, from $186 million a year earlier. The group was hit by a 16% drop in the average sale price for oil products to $70.90 per barrel, after it warned in mid-June that weak prices would weigh on its quarterly revenue, echoing comments from TotalEnergies ( opens new tab, BP (BP.L), opens new tab and Shell (SHEL.L), opens new tab. "Despite the sharp fall in crude oil prices, M&P has once again demonstrated the strength of its business model and its ability to generate value," CEO Olivier de Langavant said in a press release, however. Crude oil prices fell in the second quarter after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies (OPEC+) in April began to unwind its self-imposed production cuts of 2.17 million barrels per day. The organization agreed on Sunday to raise oil production by 547,000 barrels per day for September, the latest in a series of accelerated output hikes to regain market share, as concerns mount over potential supply disruptions linked to Russia.

India's biggest refiner buys US, Middle East crude as Trump slams Russia purchases
SINGAPORE/NEW DELHI, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Indian Oil Corp ( opens new tab has bought 7 million barrels of crude from the United States, Canada and the Middle East, four trade sources said on Monday, as U.S. President Donald Trump ramped up his criticism of the country over its purchases of Russian oil. India is the biggest buyer of seaborne crude from Russia, which is under Western-led sanctions over its war in Ukraine. Its main refiners paused buying Russian oil last week as discounts to other suppliers narrowed after Trump threatened hefty tariffs on imports from countries that make any such purchases, Reuters reported last week. Indian government officials denied any policy change. On Monday, Trump said on Truth Social he would substantially raise the import levy on Indian goods, accusing the country of not only buying massive amounts of Russian oil but "they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits". India imported about 1.75 million barrels per day of Russian oil from January to June this year, up 1% from a year ago, according to data provided to Reuters by trade sources. IOC, India's largest refiner, bought crude via a tender from the United States, Canada and the Middle East for September arrival, the trade sources said on Monday. They declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media. The refiner bought 4.5 million barrels of U.S. crude, 500,000 barrels of Western Canadian Select (WCS) and two million barrels of Das oil produced in Abu Dhabi, the sources said. The higher-than-normal purchases are partly to replace Russian barrels, two of the sources said. Indian state refiners - IOC, Hindustan Petroleum Corp ( opens new tab, Bharat Petroleum Corp ( opens new tab and Mangalore Refinery Petrochemical Ltd ( opens new tab - had not sought Russian crude in the past week or so, Reuters reported last week. Indian companies do not comment on oil purchases. In IOC's tender that closed on Friday, P66 and Equinor ( opens new tab will each ship 1 million barrels of U.S. West Texas Intermediate Midland crude while Mercuria will ship 2 million barrels of the same grade, the sources said. Vitol will deliver 1 million barrels of WTI Midland and WCS, they added. Trafigura will deliver 2 million barrels of Das. Prices for the deals were not immediately available. U.S. criticism of India's oil purchases from Russia sharpened after New Delhi and Washington failed to reach an agreement on a trade deal, prompting the Trump administration to levy a 25% import tariff on Indian goods.

Nigeria's oil production topped 1.8 million barrels per day in July, regulator says
LAGOS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Nigeria's oil production surpassed 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) last month, with current average output at 1.78 million bpd, Gbenga Komolafe, chief executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, said at a conference on Monday. The West African country, Africa's largest oil producer, relies on crude oil for nearly two-thirds of government revenue and over 80% of foreign currency earnings, making production gains critical for stabilising its economy. However, widespread oil theft and years of underinvestment have curtailed output and strained public finances in recent years.
