Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, whose on-pitch chemistry dazzled at Barcelona and Inter Miami, have embarked on a new venture, co-founding Deportivo LSM, a club set to compete in Uruguay's professional football structure. The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks a significant step for the Uruguayan project Suarez started in 2018.
A Shared Vision
Originally founded as Deportivo LS in Ciudad de la Costa, the club focused on nurturing local talent and creating community opportunities. Rebranded as Deportivo LSM to honour Messi's involvement, it will now enter Uruguay's fourth division under the Uruguayan FA (AUF). 'This project is the perfect place to continue sharing our vision of football,' Suarez said in an Instagram video, revealing he invited his 'friend' Messi to join the professional venture.
From Pitch to Project
The duo's partnership, forged during six trophy-laden seasons at Barcelona, saw them claim 13 major titles, including the 2015 Champions League and four LaLiga crowns. Reunited at Inter Miami in 2023, alongside ex-Barcelona stars Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, they led the MLS side to the 2024 Supporters' Shield. Now, their off-field collaboration aims to build a legacy in Uruguay, with the pair overseeing operations and appointing a local sports manager.
Suarez's Dream Expands
Suarez, Uruguay's record goalscorer, launched Deportivo LS to give back to his homeland, growing it to over 3,000 members with robust infrastructure. 'A family dream that started in 2018,' he called it, expressing pride in its expansion into professional and youth competitions. Messi, 37, thanked Suarez for the opportunity, vowing to 'contribute as much as I can to continue growing' the club.
A New Chapter for Uruguay
Deportivo LSM's entry into professional football signals ambition for Uruguayan football's lower tiers. With Messi and Suarez's global stature, the project is poised to inspire young players and elevate the sport's profile in the region. As the duo swap the spotlight of the pitch for the boardroom, their enduring friendship continues to shape football's future.

The Special Squad

July 31 - August 6 ,2025 By Melissa Nazareth A new comic series, dedicated to children with special needs has been launched in Bahrain, expressing solidarity and empathy with them and their caregivers, writes Melissa Nazareth. The Special Squad is the latest initiative of Shahzaib's Club House, a local community of differently abled people, and tackles topics like regulating difficult emotions, common apprehensions felt by differently abled individuals and pursuing ambitions against the odds, among others. The comics are brought alive as conversations, inspired by real-life dialogues the children at the club house have had with their parents, teachers or others. 'While the comic series was born in Bahrain, its heartbeat is universal, and we're thrilled to have started it in collaboration with a creative agency in Pakistan,' club house founder and director Amena Shahrukh told GulfWeekly. 'The Special Squad is a visual story world where children of determination aren't pitied or 'managed'. They take centre stage and are bold, tender, hilarious, curious and unapologetically themselves. Each comic is a real conversation. These stories reflect what really happens at Shahzaib's Club House,' she added. Amena started the club house, registered under Bahrain Mobility International, three years ago, as an extension of her personal journey with her late son, Mohammed Shahzaib Lali, who was differently abled. He died of pneumonia at the age of 21. Talking about plans for the comic series, Amena revealed that she hopes to publish them as a book and eventually launch themed merchandise. 'We will be releasing merchandise for special children, designed to uplift, inspire and represent them like never before,' she added. To read the comics, follow @shahzaibsclubhouse on Instagram.

Xhaka, Wearside, and the Shock Return

Granit Xhaka's unlikely Sunderland switch sends tremors through the Premier League In one of the more surprising moves of the summer, Granit Xhaka has signed for Sunderland on a three-year deal, marking a dramatic return to the Premier League after two seasons away. The 32-year-old joins the newly-promoted club from Bayer Leverkusen, where he played a central role in a historic Bundesliga title win and a Europa League final run. Now, he's swapping Champions League football for a different kind of challenge in red and white. From Xabi to Stadium of Light Xhaka's exit from Leverkusen comes just a week after Erik ten Hag, newly in charge of the German champions, publicly insisted the Swiss midfielder was 'too important to lose.' That only shows how determined Sunderland were to get their man. Reports suggest the fee was £17.3 million, a statement signing for a side returning to the Premier League after a long, hard slog through the lower divisions. Leader in the Room Speaking to the club, Xhaka made his intentions clear. 'I'm very proud to be here,' he said. 'I felt the energy, the mentality, it just felt right.' It's a significant acquisition for Sunderland, both symbolically and practically. With 225 Premier League appearances for Arsenal and two FA Cups to his name, Xhaka arrives as both a seasoned anchor and a tone-setter in the dressing room. No Free Passes Sunderland, for their part, aren't easing into their top-flight return quietly. Their first fixture will be a home match against West Ham United on August 16. With Xhaka now pulling the strings in midfield, expect a fiercer, more structured side.

Heidi Klum ‘doesn't worry about age-shaming'

Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles Heidi Klum thinks society has become 'more welcoming of wrinkles'. The 52-year-old model has suggested that attitudes towards ageing have changed in recent years, observing that it's now 'okay to be older'. Heidi told People: 'I feel like we're more welcoming of wrinkles and rolls on our body. Being accepted at every age is amazing. That we've changed and come all that way.' Heidi doesn't have any fears of 'age-shaming or body-shaming'. She shared: 'For me to be older, it doesn't matter. I don't have this age-shaming or body-shaming thing. I feel like everyone should do what they want to do. I like to run around sexy — even now at 52.' Heidi actually loves posting sexy photos of herself on social media. The model suggested that she's been posting so-called thirst traps since before social media was invented. She said: 'I've been photographing nude or in lingerie since 1992, way before Instagram. 'So for me, it's nothing new. For the past 15 years, other people are now doing what I've been doing for 30 years. Instead of being in my little bottoms in a magazine, I'm on Instagram. It's the same thing.' The model has also encouraged other women to not 'hide' once they reach 50. She said: 'The biggest misconception [about] being in your 50s is that you are off the shelf. You're not off the shelf. We are very much on that shelf for everyone to see. 'Don't hide in your 50s. Beauty is ever- changing, and I'm here for the change. If it's always the same, life is boring.'
