Erik ten Hag emerges as contender for top Bundesliga job - as Dutchman eyes return to management seven months after his sacking by Manchester United

Daily Mail30-04-2025

Erik ten Hag has emerged as a contender to replace Xabi Alonso should he confirm his expected departure from Bayer Leverkusen.
Talks have yet to take place as Alonso has still to confirm his plans with Real Madrid waiting in the wings for the Spaniard.
But former Manchester United boss Ten Hag is on a list of potential candidates that Leverkusen would like to speak to should Alonso leave.
Ten Hag has a good reputation in Germany from his time working at Bayern Munich and was heavily linked with the Borussia Dortmund coaching role in January.
However, the 55-year old, who was sacked by Manchester United in October and continues to be paid compensation by the club, has been keen to recharge and take his time before leaping straight back into management.
Leverkusen are second in the Bundesliga, eight points adrift of Bayern Munich. However, Leverkusen boss Alonso is favourite to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.
Ancelotti had been lined up to become national team coach of Brazil but that is now in doubt as Madrid have not given permission yet.
Though the 65-year old Italian coach is still expected to leave the Bernabeu, Madrid have yet to clarify plans of who will be in charge for the forthcoming World Club Championship.
Their reluctance to give Ancelotti the green light has put his potential appointment as Brazil boss in jeopardy.

Inter appoint Romanian Chivu as manager

June 9 (Reuters) - Inter Milan appointed Romanian Cristian Chivu as coach on Monday on a two-year deal in place of Simone Inzaghi who left the role following the Italian side's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain. Former Inter defender Chivu, who left Parma less than four months in charge, played as a defender for Inter for seven years and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side in 2010. "In February 2025, Cristian was given his first opportunity to coach a senior side as Parma... He led the Emilians to safety, with the team picking up 16 points from 13 matches under his guidance," Inter said in a statement. "Now, Cristian Chivu is beginning the third chapter of his Nerazzurri story. And he's doing so with the values that have always guided him: dedication, sacrifice and a tireless work ethic." Inter begin their Club World Cup campaign against Mexico's Monterrey on June 17 in Los Angeles. Inzaghi, who left the club last week after four years as coach, has joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

Nothing will change – Cristiano Ronaldo intends to remain at Al Nassr

There had been speculation – fuelled by FIFA president Gianni Infantino – the five-time Ballon d'Or winner could join a club competing in this summer's Club World Cup on a short-term deal. The 40-year-old had also hinted his future could lie elsewhere when he posted a message on social media at the end of Al Nassr's season that read: 'This chapter is over. The story? Still being written.' But speaking after Portugal's triumph over Spain in the UEFA Nations League final on Sunday – in which Ronaldo scored his 138th international goal – the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star said he would not be moving on. 'Future? Nothing will change. Al Nassr? Yes,' the forward told reporters. Ronaldo joined the Saudi Pro League side in December 2022 after a second spell at United ended in controversy following an interview in which he criticised the Premier League club. His contract in Riyadh was due to expire this summer, prompting speculation linking him with Brazilian club Botafogo, who are involved in the Club World Cup. Infantino added credence to the reports by saying 'Ronaldo might play for one of the teams' featuring at the tournament in the United States and that 'there are discussions with some clubs'. This comes after Infantino and governing body FIFA were criticised over the manner in which they handed a host nation spot at the event to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami without them winning Major League Soccer.
