Allocate more funds for education of children from Koraga community, says activist
Mangaluru: Social activist and CPM district secretary Muneer Katipalla urged both central and state govts to invest substantially in the education of children from the Koraga community.
He spoke at the inauguration of a personality development and scholarship distribution programme for Koraga community students, organised by the Shri Koragajja Seva Trust in Vamanjoor.
"The indigenous Koraga community, inheritors of all modern knowledge traditions, is a tribal community on the brink of extinction due to exploitation from the hierarchical caste system. In the current era of globalisation, liberalisation, and privatisation, formal education is essential to secure even minimal opportunities," said Muneer.
Further, he emphasised the need to allocate at least 10% of the annual income from the numerous Koragajja shrines in both districts to the education of Koraga community children.
Krishnappa Konchadi, the state co-director of the Karnataka Adivasi Rights Coordination Committee, said that education is the first step towards the liberation of the indigenous Koraga community of coastal Karnataka, who were victims of centuries of injustice, exploitation, oppression, and caste untouchability. He stressed that both the govt and society must work with a spirit of dedication towards this cause.
Shri Koragajja Seva Trust distributed student scholarship funds to 100 students pursuing education in extreme poverty.

10 candidates in fray for Nilambur bypoll in Kerala
Kozhikode: The stage is set for Nilambur bypoll as the deadline to withdraw nominations ended on Thursday. Of the 14 nominations cleared after scrutiny, four candidates, including a namesake of former MLA PV Anvar, withdrew. This leaves 10 candidates in the fray. Anvar, running as an independent, has been given the scissors symbol. Both UDF and LDF see the election as a key political battle. For UDF, reclaiming its traditional stronghold is crucial for candidate Aryadan Shoukath — son of veteran leader Aryadan Mohammed, who held the seat for 34 years — and opposition leader VD Satheesan ahead of the upcoming local body and assembly elections. LDF aims to retain the seat with M Swaraj, reinforcing its pitch for a third consecutive govt in 2026. UDF has framed the election as a public verdict on what it calls the LDF govt's 'nine-year misrule'. It has also tried to highlight the LDF's alleged 'anti-Malappuram stance', citing past remarks by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, politburo member A Vijayaraghavan and other CPM leaders. LDF, on the other hand, is eager to retain the seat with Swaraj. A win would support its narrative of continued public trust in its development agenda and governance. The LDF also hopes to benefit from internal rifts within the UDF, especially around the Anvar issue. Meanwhile, for Anvar, delivering a strong performance is key to his political survival. Initially, BJP appeared undecided about contesting Nilambur bypoll, calling it inconsequential with the assembly term ending next year. However, the party eventually fielded former Kerala Congress leader Mohan George. The NDA's election campaign was launched by Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi on Thursday. The bypoll will be held on June 19 and the votes will be counted on June 23.

Kerala: Congress striving hard to brand CPM ‘anti-Muslim'
MALAPPURAM: After a brief lull, in the wake of M Swaraj's dramatic entry into the Nilambur by-election fray and the overwhelming reception he received in the constituency, the Congress has hit the campaign trail with renewed vigour. The grand old party first tried to brand the CPM as 'anti-Muslim'. But with P V Anwar also positioning himself along similar lines, Congress leaders have upped the ante, attacking the CPM for 'denigrating Malappuram' district by branding it a hub of anti-social activities. The tone was set by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal during the UDF election convention. On Wednesday, Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan turned on the heat saying that CPM leaders have been consistently targeting Malappuram. 'The PR agency of the chief minister issued a press release to a national daily in Delhi which said that extremist activities and gold smuggling are thriving in Malappuram. This is the narrative built by the Sangh parivar,' he said. 'The CPM leader assigned to lead the LDF campaign in Nilambur is the party politburo member A Vijayaraghavan. There have been at least a dozen statements from himinsulting the people of Malappuram,' Satheesan said.

Kerala: Panchayat cancels decision to appoint BJP supporter as High Court standing counsel
MALAPPURAM: The Vazhikkadavu panchayat has cancelled the decision to appoint Sangh Parivar supporter R Krishnaraj as its standing counsel in the High Court after the decision became a big embarrassment for the IUML. Panchayat president Thankamma N K issued an order stating that Krishnaraj will not appear for the local body in the future. The decision has stirred a hornet's nest as it was alleged that Krishnaraj has been very critical of the Muslim community. His post against IUML state president Panakkad Syed Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal resurfaced on Facebook amid the controversy. The CPM had alleged that the incident exposed the nexus between the UDF and the BJP, and that Krishnaraj was the mediator in the deal between the two parties. IUML had earlier claimed that it was the panchayat secretary, who is the husband of a CPM leader in Malappuram, who selected the advocate. But later the minutes of the decision taken by the panchayat board surfaced in public domain. The panchayat president said she didn't know that Krishnaraj was a BJP activist. 'An advocate was representing the panchayat in the court. The UDF leadership later appointed another person as standing counsel. Krishnaraj was appointed after the person voluntarily opted out,' she said. Thankamma added that it was the panchayat secretary and the vice-president who suggested to the board to appoint Krishnaraj. No one on the board objected to the decision at that time, she said. 'The responsibility of handling the case is with the secretary. We only ratified the agenda when it was presented in the board meeting,' the president said. IUML MLA Najeeb Kanthapuram said the party is taking the issue seriously and would take necessary action. 'It cannot be considered as merely the fault of the officials,' he said. There are seven IUML members and six Congress members on the panchayat board. CPM has seven members and CPI one. Congress' Reji Joseph is the vice-president of the panchayat.
