IICT landmark step for institutionalising India's cultural, creative strengths: I&B secretary
The IICT has been envisioned as the 'creative counterpart' to the IITs and IIMs.
New Delhi, May 30 (PTI) The recent establishment of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai is a landmark initiative for institutionalising the country's cultural and creative strengths, a top official of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said here on Friday.
Jaju underscored India's unique civilisational journey and diverse cultural expressions as the foundation of the country's growing global soft power, according to a statement issued by the organisers.
Drawing on classical references like 'drishti', 'shruti' and 'kriti' — representing India's visual, oral and written traditions — the Union secretary emphasised how ancient legacies like the Natya Shastra and the Vedas, along with storytelling epics, music and mudras, continue to shape the country's vibrant creative economy.
He highlighted the establishment of the IICT as a landmark initiative for institutionalising India's cultural and creative strengths, the statement said.
Jaju emphasised that India is a 'storytelling superpower', with many untapped narratives waiting to be transformed into immersive global experiences.
He reaffirmed the country's 'potential to become a creative superpower', urging the industry to harness this opportunity through unity, innovation and a shared cultural vision.
Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in his address, highlighted that India's rising stature on the global stage is a result of a renewed national pride and a transformed self-image.
He noted a paradigm shift in tourism post-COVID-19, with travellers increasingly seeking immersive and experiential journeys.
India's tourism sector, supported by robust infrastructure development, airports, roads and railways, is witnessing significant growth, particularly in spiritual and domestic tourism, the minister said.
Destinations like Ujjain's Mahakal Lok corridor have attracted more than 10 lakh visitors in a month, illustrating the sector's resurgence, he added.
With domestic tourism showing greater potential than international travel, India is aiming to align its tourism GDP contribution to global benchmarks, targeting 10 per cent of the national GDP by 2030, Shekhawat was quoted as saying in the statement.
Puneet Chhatwal, Chairman, CII National Committee on Tourism and Hospitality, emphasised that India's soft power is deeply rooted in its rich culture, heritage and hospitality, which serve as powerful tools for global engagement and trust-building.
He noted that every USD 1 million invested in tourism can generate nearly 100 direct and 250 indirect jobs and significantly increase foreign-tourist arrivals and foreign-exchange earnings. PTI KND RC

Mathura Preps For Janmashtami: Vehicle Entry Banned, Over 5,000 Personnel Deployed
Mathura and Vrindavan fortified for Janmashtami: 5,000 police deployed, 300+ CCTV cameras installed and heavy vehicles banned. Uttar Pradesh's temple towns of Mathura and Vrindavan transformed into a virtual fortress, with thousands of police personnel deployed across the cities as lakhs of devotees poured to celebrate Shri Krishna Janmashtami. The authorities stepped up vigilance to ensure smooth and safe celebrations in the entire braj area. To maintain law and order, district authorities divided the city in four zones and 18 sectors, deploying more than 5,000 police officers and personnel, news agency PTI reported. More than 300 CCTV cameras have been installed in and around the famous temples. Additional security arrangements have been made at the ShriKrishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadheesh Temple and Banke Bihari Temple. Entry of all heavy vehicles into Mathura has been banned, and vehicle movement on routes leading to the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple has been significantly restricted due to heavy crowds, officials said. Social media activity is under strict watch, and the inner area of the Janmasthan temple has been designated a red zone with extra police presence. The yellow and green zones around it are manned by plain-clothed personnel, including women officers. Barricades have been set up at multiple points, where police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) teams are screening visitors to prevent the entry of unwanted elements, they said. Entry to the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple is now through the northern gate (Govind Nagar side), while the main gate is being used for exit. Mobile phones, key rings, wristwatches, and any electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside. Devotees have been advised not to carry items like shoes, bags, matches, lighters or umbrellas to the temple, and to leave them safely at their accommodation to avoid difficulties during the exit, which will be from a different point. To assist pilgrims, police have launched a website to provide information on temples, routes, restrictions and other guidelines. Railways have extended services and added temporary halts to accommodate the influx of devotees arriving from Delhi, Bhopal and other cities. Several trains will run to Mathura until August 18. Additional temporary halts have been provided at Bhuteshwar station for multiple long-distance trains, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Amritsar, Korba-Amritsar, Puri-Yoganagari Rishikesh and Agra Cantt-New Delhi. The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation has also increased buses frequency between Mathura and Agra to meet the surge in passenger demand. Shri Krishna Janmotsav 2025 Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a Hindu festival that marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Celebrated with great enthusiasm across India and by Hindus worldwide, Janmashtami usually falls in August, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada. This year marks the 5252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. The Krishna Mahotsav 2025 began on Friday morning with a grand procession from the Shri Krishna Janmasthan temple, featuring 300-400 folk artistes performing along the route. The procession started from the main gate, passed through Deeg Gate, Roopam Cinema Tiraha, Govind Nagar police station, Mahavidya Colony, and Potra Kund, before returning to the main gate. All important temples in Mathura have been decorated with colourful lights and flowers. The temples of Vrindavan and the ghats of Yamuna river are also being decorated, the official said. view comments Location : Mathura, India, India First Published: August 15, 2025, 21:50 IST News india Mathura Preps For Janmashtami: Vehicle Entry Banned, Over 5,000 Personnel Deployed Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Chhath Ghat, Yamuna cruise service: CM announces plans to make Delhi tourism hub
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) Developing a 12-km-long 'Chhath Ghat', Yamuna cruise service and a tourism circuit are some of the major plans of the Rekha Gupta government to boost tourism in Delhi. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced the construction of the Chhath Ghat along the Yamuna, which will be one of the largest riverfront spaces in the country and is expected to welcome lakhs of devotees during Chhath Puja and other major events. To further revitalise the riverfront, regular Yamuna Aarti will also be organised, she said. The Delhi CM made these announcements while speaking at an Independence Day celebration, according to an official statement. The government will soon launch a comprehensive tourism circuit linking Delhi's most significant heritage landmarks, enabling visitors to experience the city's cultural journey through a seamless and well-curated route. This initiative will integrate historic forts, monuments, museums and cultural centres into a tourism experience that would reflect Delhi's past and the present. Plans are also underway to introduce a state-of-the-art Yamuna cruise service, offering tourists a scenic journey through the city's cultural and spiritual heart, she said. She said that the capital will not only preserve its historic grandeur but also embrace modern infrastructure to attract both domestic and international visitors. 'These tourism projects will not only strengthen our economy but also give every visitor a deeper, more soulful connection to our capital," she said. Gupta also spoke about her vision to make Delhi a global hub for tourism, education and healthcare and emphasised that both the government's efforts and citizens' involvement were needed to transform Delhi. '…this change will only be possible with your support. I have two appeals to every Delhiite: First, plant a tree in the name of your living or late mother. Second, let us give Delhi freedom from garbage. Until 15 August 2026, let us pledge not to litter on roads or in public places, and work together for a clean, beautiful city," she said. At the event, she also accused the previous government of depriving Delhi residents of the benefits of the Ayushman scheme. She said her government implemented it on the very first day after taking the oath. To strengthen the healthcare infrastructure, a target of 1,100 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs has been set, out of which 166 have already been completed, the CM said. Additionally, in August, five major hospital expansion projects will be inaugurated, adding 1,300 new beds, new OPDs and state-of-the-art medical equipment, Gupta highlighted. To address the shortage of medical machines in hospitals, 150 dialysis machines, 20 CT scan machines, and 12 MRI machines have been installed. New medical superintendents have been appointed in 28 hospitals, and 1,500 nurses have been given permanent appointments. Further, she said that Delhi's hospitals have been connected to the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), enabling patients to book appointments online and access facilities like digital health records and a unique health ID. Govt implements ₹3,000 FASTag pass for private vehicles
New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) State-owned NHAI has implemented the FASTag annual pass across the country from Friday to encourage the use of technology to enhance 'ease of living' for the citizens, according to an official statement. The statement said the annual pass has received an overwhelming response from the national highway users. "Till 4:30 PM on the first day of the implementation, around 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass and about 1.24 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas," it added. The statement said that providing a seamless and economical travel option to national highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through a one-time fee payment of ₹ 3,000 for one year's validity or 200 toll plaza crossings on National Highways and Expressways across the country. The annual pass is applicable to all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment through the Rajmargyatra App or NHAI website. With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over 8 crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country, the statement said. The introduction of the annual pass facility will not only enhance the FASTag user experience but also make journeys on the National Highways and Expressways more economical and seamless, it added.
