Global mobility crisis
Henley & Partners has released its annual Henley Passport Index, placing Pakistan at 96th out of 99 positions — fourth from the bottom for the fourth consecutive year. The ranking is based on the number of visa-free and visa on arrival (VOA) countries that passport holders have access to, along with their ability to obtain an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) which is a digital travel permit used as a pre-screening method for visa-exempt foreign nationals. While the strongest passport in the world, Singapore's, grants visa-free access to 193 countries, the Pakistani passport offers merely 32 visa-free locations.
A 'weak' passport hinders citizens in many ways beyond increasing travel and visa costs. It creates barriers for entrepreneurs looking to expand their businesses internationally, forcing them to face long waiting times and visa rejections. Moreover, in the past, several domestic e-sports and gaming teams have even been disqualified from international tournaments due to visa-rejections and delayed embassy responses.
In an increasingly global world, the degree of mobility that people in a country have largely determines their ability to advance and connect with the global economy. Without those connections, there is limited exposure, limited opportunity and limited competition on an international scale.
Consistently ranking amongst the bottom five contenders for four years now should force the Pakistani government to divert its attention away from empty diplomatic posturing and instead direct it towards structural reforms that strengthen people's global integration. Especially when its bottom-ranking neighbours include Somalia, Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan — some of the most war-torn countries devastated by active conflict and occupation.
While strengthening a passport's ranking is no easy feat, it should at least be an objective that the Pakistani government actively pursues to ease its citizens' lives and improve its own standing on the global stage.

Indian statement on IIOJK attackers ‘replete with fabrications', says Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The Indian home minister's account of forces killing who he said were three Pakistanis involved in the April attack on Hindu tourists in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) federal territory was 'replete with fabrications', Pakistan's foreign ministry said on Wednesday. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah told parliament on Tuesday that the three militants killed in a gun battle in a IIOJK forest this week were the perpetrators of the April 22 attack and that New Delhi had found evidence to back it. Pakistan has denied involvement in the attack in which 26 men were shot dead - the worst assault on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks - and sought an independent investigation. 'The account given by the Indian home minister is replete with fabrications, leading to serious questions about its credibility,' Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement. The attackers, who India claimed were Pakistani nationals backed by Islamabad, had opened fire in a valley popular with tourists in IIOJK's scenic, mountainous region of Pahalgam, before fleeing into the surrounding pine forests. It led New Delhi to target what it called 'terrorist infrastructure' in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, leading to four days of intense fighting in May between the nuclear-armed neighbours before they agreed to a ceasefire.

Rupee continues to gain against US dollar
Rupee's Performance Against US Dollar Since 04 March 2025 The Pakistani rupee maintained its upward trajectory against the US dollar, appreciating 0.04% during trading in the inter-bank market on Wednesday. At close, the currency settled at 282.95, a gain of Re0.1. On Tuesday, the currency settled at 283.05. Pakistan's crackdown on black market dollar trading has strengthened the rupee, but traders say under-the-counter deals have swiftly shifted to smartphones and home deliveries instead. Many unlicensed exchange shops have been shut since July 22, when the military spy agency summoned representatives of the sector to explain the US dollar's rising cost in the open market. Soon after, raids were carried out by the Federal Investigation Agency, which tackles financial crime and smuggling. Since the crackdown began, the rupee has rebounded from a sharp fall against the dollar earlier in July. Internationally, the euro steadied near its lowest in a month on Wednesday, nursing steep losses this week as investors counted the cost of the US-EU trade pact and looked ahead to policy meetings from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. US and Chinese officials agreed to seek an extension of their 90-day tariff truce on Tuesday, following two days of what both sides described as constructive talks in Stockholm. No major breakthroughs were announced, and US officials said it was up to President Donald Trump to decide whether to extend a truce that expires on August 12. The euro was 0.12% higher at $1.1558 in early trading after dropping for the first two days of the week and hitting a one-month low of $1.15185 on Tuesday. The single currency has benefited this year from the dollar losing its lustre due to Trump's erratic trade policies, prompting investors to look for alternatives. The Japanese yen firmed a bit to 148.20 per dollar. That left the dollar index, which measures the US currency against six others, at 98.815, hovering near a one-month high. The index is set to record its first month of gains this year. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, ticked up in early trading on Wednesday after rising more than 3% in the previous session as potential supply shortages came into focus after US President Donald Trump gave Moscow an abbreviated deadline toward ending the war in Ukraine. Brent crude futures rose 14 cents, or 0.19%, to $72.65 a barrel by 0048 GMT while US West Texas Intermediate crude climbed 2 cents, or 0.03%, to $69.23 a barrel. Both contracts had settled at their highest since June 20 on Tuesday.
