KUALA LUMPUR (July 10): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the US still values its ties with Malaysia and also wants to continue working with other South-east Asian countries, after meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio here today.
The US had earlier this week announced a new tariff rate of 25 per cent which will take effect on August 1 on goods imported from Malaysia, and Anwar confirmed that he had discussed this matter with Rubio today.
'We raised the issue of tariffs by President Trump. He said that letter is a general letter but there is still one month's time to negotiate.
'And he knows Malaysia is the US' main trade partner in this region and he will give consideration and present our views,' Anwar said in an audio recording made available to the media.
Anwar said their discussion largely focused on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
'The US still considers its relationship with Malaysia to be important and also wants to maintain and increase cooperation with Asean and Asean nations, and understands our stand to have good ties and trade with all countries.'
Anwar said Malaysia did not have to choose between its trade partners but could do business with all countries.
'While the US is an important trade partner, we will enhance our ties with China, Asean countries and other countries for the citizens' interest and for the nation's benefit.'
Malaysia is currently chairing Asean, which has 10 members.
Malaysia is also hosting the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting from July 8 to July 11.
Rubio arrived here today as part of the US delegation for a series of Asean-led meetings, and was reported to be expected to hold talks with senior Malaysian officials including Anwar. – Malay Mail anwar ibrahim malaysia Marco Rubio tariff us

President Abbas: The Suffering Of Palestinians In Gaza Is A Crime That Cannot Be Tolerated

RAMALLAH, July 24 (Bernama-WAFA) -- Palestine's President Mahmoud Abbas affirmed Thursday that the suffering of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, who are enduring siege, starvation, and deprivation of the most basic necessities of life, constitutes a crime that cannot be tolerated, Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported. In a televised address to the people of Gaza, broadcast on Thursday afternoon via Palestine TV, Abbas said that the Palestinian people are facing the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of our time, with international efforts failing to deter the Israeli occupation. He questioned, "How can the world abandon its humanity?" Abbas added that the starvation of civilians and the killings taking place in front of aid centres in Gaza "represent a stain of shame on the forehead of the international community if it does not act immediately to stop this genocide." bootstrap slideshow He stressed that the continuation of this situation amounts to a war crime, for which the Israeli occupation bears full responsibility. He called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the urgent entry of food and medical supplies, and the release of Palestinian tax revenues withheld by the Israeli government. The President urged the US President to intervene and allow UN organisations to deliver food and medical aid, calling on the international community to find immediate ways to bring hundreds of thousands of tons of humanitarian assistance currently surrounding the Gaza Strip into the area. He reaffirmed his rejection of all forms of displacement, calling for the full withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces and for the State of Palestine to be enabled to assume full responsibility, assist the people of Gaza in returning to their homes, maintain security, enforce the rule of law, and begin reconstruction with Arab and international support. Abbas warned that attempts to impose Israeli sovereignty over settlement areas in the West Bank represent a dangerous escalation and a serious undermining of the Palestinian people's right to an independent and sovereign state. He urged the international community to reject these violations and to recognise the State of Palestine.

GCC Secretary-General Warns Israeli Sovereignty Bid Threatens Regional Stability, Violates UN Resolutions

RIYADH, July 24 (Bernama-SPA) -- Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Albudaiwi expressed strong condemnation of the Israeli occupation forces' Knesset proposal to impose Israeli sovereignty by force over the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported. Albudaiwi said that this proposal, intending to impose sovereignty by force, confirms the dangerous annexation policies of the Israeli occupation forces, which now threaten the security of the region and constitute a flagrant violation of international and UN resolutions. He added that such an irresponsible step will only escalate tensions in the region and the world, and increase the suffering of the Palestinian people, calling on the international community to take a clear and firm stance to halt any unilateral measures that would threaten the prospects for a comprehensive and just peace.
