TV fans have less than a month to binge on free streamer before it's shut down

Metro04-07-2025
A free streaming service hailed as 'brilliant' by users will be shutting down for good next month, but fans can still watch for free on Amazon Prime Video.
Freevee is Amazon's free, ad-supported streaming service and gives users access to thousands of movies and TV shows without the need for a subscription.
It was launched in 2019 as a FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) service under IMDb, before rebranding as Freevee in April 2022.
Amazon first announced its intention to shut down Freevee in November 2024, citing plans to consolidate both its free and paid streaming offerings in one app, Prime Video.
Now, Amazon has confirmed when the free streaming service will close for good.
An in-app message has appeared, notifying users of the change. It says: 'Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and live TV.
'The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favorite free originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.'
This means that while the streaming app is disappearing, the content on it won't be.
Instead, fans of Freevee can access the same shows and movies for free, with ads, at their new home on Prime Video.
An Amazon representative previously told Variety: 'To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST channels — all available on Prime Video.'
Freevee's most popular content includes Emmy-nominated reality sitcom Jury Duty, which explored the inner workings of an American jury trial through the eyes of one juror, who doesn't realise that everyone except him is an actor.
There's also Australian soap Neighbours and the Alex Rider series, which is a thriller following a teenager who finds out his late uncle was a spy, as well as Judy Justice, starring Judge Judy Sheindlin.
Freevee also has Bosch: Legacy, a sequel to Prime Video's Bosch, and plenty of classic shows such as Hell's Kitchen, Mr Bean, Skins and Benidorm.
For films, Freevee viewers can watch Me Before You, the 2013 re-imagining of Carrie, The Nice Guys and many more.
Online, Freevee users have shared their thoughts on the app's closure, with some disappointed by the change.
Reddit user Useuless said: 'This means no dedicated Freevee channel so you can only browse it's content, instead you have to wade through paid for content as well. Essentially it still exists, but now with ads and a more time consuming interface.'
philosofova added: 'Will be kinda missed, I mainly liked it for the channel surfing aspect which I missed when I just wanted to watch random stuff.'
And tunachilimac wrote: 'I am watching a couple things on Freevee and installed Prime because of this. The Freevee UI is much better than the Prime Video UI. It's weird they aren't keeping the better interface at least.'
Others were less bothered, however, with Shap6 writing: 'I was looking through it just the other night out of curiosity, terrible content selection even by free streaming TV standards'.
Lithogiraffe added: 'Go ahead. Nearly everything there is also on Tubi free'.
Nevertheless, Freevee received hundreds of positive reviews during its time, with fans hailing it as 'brilliant'.
On the Amazon website, reviewer Angel Eyes wrote: 'It's brilliant. It allowed me to catch up on all the episodes that I had missed. There's a lot of great content on there and the picture is amazing. The ads are very brief and not at all intrusive.' More Trending
And John Chewter said: 'I am now hooked and am finding some very good Australian and New Zealand crime drama series I had never heard of and that are very good!'
Another reviewer added: 'Unlike the other free movie channels, this one has only a few short ad breaks and does not bombard you with them. Use it all the time.'
To find Freevee's content on Prime Video from next month, users should browse the 'free with ads' section of the Prime Video website and app.

Lauren Sanchez leaves little to the imagination in a sheer backless dress as she enjoys a romantic date night with Jeff Bezos in Saint Tropez

turned heads in a risqué sheer dress as she enjoyed a romantic date night with her husband Jeff Bezos in Saint-Tropez, France on Wednesday. Just weeks after tying the knot in Venice, the newlyweds looked happier than ever as they stepped out for dinner at Cherry restaurant. The billionaire Amazon founder, 61, and Lauren, 55, were every inch the doting new husband and wife on their cosy evening. Lauren went braless and showed off her incredible figure in a backless leopard print number, flashing a black thong beneath. She walked hand-in-hand with husband Jeff, who dressed smart in navy polo shirt and grey trousers. The couple beamed while departing the Italian restaurant, which over looks the ocean. The famous couple said 'I do' in the romantic city of Venice back in June. Their $50million wedding had a star-studded guest list with many A-listers such as Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom, Tom Brady, Kim Kardashian and Leonardo DiCaprio in attendance. Now Lauren wears a $5million diamond wedding ring that has fans as well as jewellers in an uproar. One of their A-list wedding guests recently revealed what their lavish nuptials were really like as they disclosed that none of the Jeff couple's 200 guests were told to sign non-disclosure agreements. Sara Foster, the daughter of David Foster, shared details about the glamorous Venetian wedding on Thursday's episode of her The World's First Podcast. While talking to her sister Erin Foster, she surprisingly revealed: 'No one signed NDAs. No NDAs.' She also said that the ceremony was 'very intimate' when asked to dish on the 'wedding of the century.' 'There's nothing. It's so interesting how the optics were this over-the-top, you know, protestors ... It's just not, it's not what it was. It actually felt very intimate.' The newlyweds shared a sweet moment during dinner as Lauren tenderly placed her head on the billionaire's shoulder She also revealed that there were 'definitely a lot of people that were not photographed' but chose to keep mum on the identities of the low-key attendees. 'I can't. I mean, that's, like, so lame. I'm not gonna do that. But it's very interesting how many people went un-photographed. It was definitely a very interesting setup.' Ellie Goulding performed at their reception, while Usher also sang at their pajama-themed brunch the next day. The happy couple got married in a restored amphitheater on the island, as Sánchez wore a high-neck, long sleeve lace Dolce & Gabbana gown that took over 900 hours of atelier to make, per Vogue. The gown featured a flared skirt, long veil, and a tight-fitting waist, with tons of buttons going up the middle.

Time-travelling estate agent stars in Newport sci-fi novel

Eric Meek is the unlikely star of The Time-Travelling Estate Agent, a science fiction series by Newport author Dale Bradford. Launched in November 2024, the debut novel has remained in Amazon's top 30 bestselling time travel books since release, with the recently published sequel climbing the same charts. Dale Bradford, author of the series, said: "The Time-Travelling Estate Agent has certainly found an audience and I've been delighted to read so many positive reviews. "Eric has proven to be a very popular character and following the BBC Panorama broadcast, and the earlier Sell House Fast study, he might even be helping to improve the public's view of the profession." Mr Meek, however, is not your average estate agent. In the first book, he discovers a time portal in a client's garage, the accidental result of experiments inspired by electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. The portal allows travel between the present day and July 3, 1976, – the day that 16-year-old Eric believes shaped the rest of his life. Given the chance to revisit his past, Eric faces the question: will he change history, or will history change him? The trilogy blends sci-fi, murder mystery, and romantic comedy, with nods to films such as Groundhog Day and 50 First Dates. Set in and around Cwmbran, the series draws on Mr Bradford's childhood in South Wales. Mr Bradford now lives in Newport and has transitioned to full-time writing after a career in journalism and magazine editing. He was editor of Indie Magazine from 1995 to 2003 and later edited Erotic Trade Only until 2025. In 2023 he published his first non-fiction book, From Sex Shops To Supermarkets: How Adult Toys Became A Multi‑Billion‑Pound Industry. Both The Time-Travelling Estate Agent and its sequel are available in ebook, paperback, and hardback formats, and are free to read on Kindle Unlimited. The first book has earned four or five stars from 84 per cent of readers, with the sequel receiving similar praise from 100 per cent of reviewers. The third and final instalment of the trilogy is expected to be released in early 2026.

Stephen Colbert will win SYMPATHY Emmy after axing of his show triggered Trump gloating, industry expert predicts

The drama surrounding the abrupt cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will lead to the longtime host finally winning an Emmy after nine years of nominations, an industry expert said. Steven Zeitchik, senior editor of technology and politics at The Hollywood Reporter, argued in a new piece that Colbert's defiant stance against the Trump administration will sway the voting body at the Television Academy. A media frenzy engulfed The Late Show after Colbert publicly slammed the CBS show's parent corporation, Paramount Global, for settling a defamation lawsuit with Trump for $16 million, calling it a 'big, fat, bribe,' in his opening monologue. Just days after the searing call-out, Colbert told his studio audience that the network was ending The Late Show in May 2026. Speculation has loomed over why the show was canceled, with A-listers and fellow talk-show hosts coming to the comedian's defense. As Hollywood mourned the loss of the show, Trump was quick to celebrate, writing on Truth Social, 'I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings.' In response, Colbert returned to The Late Show stage and took the gloves off during his monologue. 'How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go f*** yourself,' he said in a message to the president. Zeitchik speculated that the increased attention and Colbert's willingness to stand up to Trump could result in The Late Show finally snagging an Emmy win. Colbert won an Emmy for his work on The Colbert Report, a satirical show that ran on Comedy Central from 2005 to 2014. After he replaced David Letterman on The Late Show, the program was nominated for the most Outstanding Talk Series at the Emmys from 2017 to 2022. Every year during that period, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won the award. Oliver's arguably the most liberal of the late-night bunch and often spotlights politics on his show. In 2023, Last Week Tonight was moved to a different category, nominated for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series. Colbert still watched from the sidelines that year as The Daily Show with Trevor Noah won the award. Noah's win coincided with his last season hosting the show, before a series of rotating hosts took over. In 2024, The Daily Show's longtime veteran host, John Stewart, made his highly anticipated return, which was enough to secure the Emmy. Zeitchik argued that Stewart's team at The Daily Show was the frontrunner this year as well, but the controversy surrounding The Late Show presents an opportunity for liberal Hollywood to stick it to the Trump administration. 'Whether the president actually had a hand in the cancellation matters less than the fact that voters see a partisan battle in the firing,' Zeitchik wrote. 'An Emmy won't change public policy on immigration and Medicaid. But it's one of the few ways liberal Hollywood can stick it to the leader they loathe.' The industry reporter also pointed out that this could be Colbert's last chance at a traditional Emmy at a major network. He also noted that, like Noah's win in 2023, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson won its first Emmy for its final year on the air. Colbert has long been a staunch critic of conservatives, frequently torching the president during his opening monologues. But long before he began hosting, Colbert spoofed conservativism on The Colbert Report, satirizing Republican television personalities like former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly. He hosted the White House Correspondents Dinner in 2006 and delivered a speech so intense that some staffers walked out. Zeitchik pointed to the irony of Colbert winning an Emmy after a feud with Trump, as the president knows what it's like to continually lose at the award show. Trump lost at the Emmys eight times during his tenure on his reality television show The Apprentice. 'So the trophy Trump is claiming here is a rich one, nearly 30 years in the making, on behalf of several generations of Republican leaders,' Zeitchik concluded. 'Of course, the trophy Colbert could wind up winning may be even sweeter.'
