TV fans have less than a month to binge on free streamer before it's shut down

Metro04-07-2025
A free streaming service hailed as 'brilliant' by users will be shutting down for good next month, but fans can still watch for free on Amazon Prime Video.
Freevee is Amazon's free, ad-supported streaming service and gives users access to thousands of movies and TV shows without the need for a subscription.
It was launched in 2019 as a FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) service under IMDb, before rebranding as Freevee in April 2022.
Amazon first announced its intention to shut down Freevee in November 2024, citing plans to consolidate both its free and paid streaming offerings in one app, Prime Video.
Now, Amazon has confirmed when the free streaming service will close for good.
An in-app message has appeared, notifying users of the change. It says: 'Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and live TV.
'The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favorite free originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.'
This means that while the streaming app is disappearing, the content on it won't be.
Instead, fans of Freevee can access the same shows and movies for free, with ads, at their new home on Prime Video.
An Amazon representative previously told Variety: 'To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST channels — all available on Prime Video.'
Freevee's most popular content includes Emmy-nominated reality sitcom Jury Duty, which explored the inner workings of an American jury trial through the eyes of one juror, who doesn't realise that everyone except him is an actor.
There's also Australian soap Neighbours and the Alex Rider series, which is a thriller following a teenager who finds out his late uncle was a spy, as well as Judy Justice, starring Judge Judy Sheindlin.
Freevee also has Bosch: Legacy, a sequel to Prime Video's Bosch, and plenty of classic shows such as Hell's Kitchen, Mr Bean, Skins and Benidorm.
For films, Freevee viewers can watch Me Before You, the 2013 re-imagining of Carrie, The Nice Guys and many more.
Online, Freevee users have shared their thoughts on the app's closure, with some disappointed by the change.
Reddit user Useuless said: 'This means no dedicated Freevee channel so you can only browse it's content, instead you have to wade through paid for content as well. Essentially it still exists, but now with ads and a more time consuming interface.'
philosofova added: 'Will be kinda missed, I mainly liked it for the channel surfing aspect which I missed when I just wanted to watch random stuff.'
And tunachilimac wrote: 'I am watching a couple things on Freevee and installed Prime because of this. The Freevee UI is much better than the Prime Video UI. It's weird they aren't keeping the better interface at least.'
Others were less bothered, however, with Shap6 writing: 'I was looking through it just the other night out of curiosity, terrible content selection even by free streaming TV standards'.
Lithogiraffe added: 'Go ahead. Nearly everything there is also on Tubi free'.
Nevertheless, Freevee received hundreds of positive reviews during its time, with fans hailing it as 'brilliant'.
On the Amazon website, reviewer Angel Eyes wrote: 'It's brilliant. It allowed me to catch up on all the episodes that I had missed. There's a lot of great content on there and the picture is amazing. The ads are very brief and not at all intrusive.' More Trending
And John Chewter said: 'I am now hooked and am finding some very good Australian and New Zealand crime drama series I had never heard of and that are very good!'
Another reviewer added: 'Unlike the other free movie channels, this one has only a few short ad breaks and does not bombard you with them. Use it all the time.'
To find Freevee's content on Prime Video from next month, users should browse the 'free with ads' section of the Prime Video website and app.

Reboot of Sherlock Holmes is 'captivaating and whipsmart'

**** The ongoing reboots of Arthur Conan Doyle's genius detective has kept his creation on trend well into the twenty-first century. Jennifer Dick's boutique stage version for Bard in the Botanics' latest non-Shakespeare outing stays true to the forensic peccadilloes of Conan Doyle's original while putting a feminist spin on things. Dick weaves together three stories; The Adventure of Abbey Grange, A Scandal in Bohemia, and The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton. At the centre of these is Irene Adler, aka The Woman, the former actress and opera singer who left her mark on the Conan Doyle canon after getting the better of Holmes. As both seasoned Sherlockians and Wikipedia will tell you, however, Irene only ever appeared in one original Holmes story. That was A Scandal in Bohemia, first published in the Strand magazine in1881 as the first of 56 Holmes missives following two novels. Dick's considerable liberty taking with her source material to make Irene a recurring character not only works, but her talent for reinvention provides extra-added intrigue to both her own story and her relationship with Holmes. The first tale finds Irene working as a maid who becomes chief witness to the murder of a drink fuelled wife beater. The second sees her move up in the world enough to be able to manipulate the fate of the womanising King of Bohemia. The third reunites Irene with Holmes and Watson to take on a vicious blackmailer who has already destroyed several women's lives. Read More: The result is a captivating and whip-smart concoction that moves briskly over its ninety-minute duration in a manner as classy as the string based musical accompaniment and the furniture of Heather Grace Currie's set. Seen up close in the Kibble Palace, the merry dance Holmes and Watson are led on by Irene sees the dynamic duo bumbling and fumbling around as Holmes lets his new nemesis off the hook several times over. Stephen Arden makes a stoic and long suffering Watson, and Adam Donaldson's Holmes is a hyper-smart if somewhat foppish sociopath who can't stop Irene seeing through his disguise every time. James Boal, meanwhile, steps up first as the indefatigable Inspector Lestrade before morphing into assorted sailors, monarchs and blackmailers. All three play second fiddle to Rebecca Robin's shape shifting turn as Irene, who champions womankind like some steam punk Valerie Solanis by way of Modesty Blaise. As the tension between Irene and Holmes simmers, the result is an unsolvable case of Sherlock in love as the great detective finally meets his match.

New TV show imagines China invasion, gives Taiwan viewers wake-up call

TAIPEI, July 28 (Reuters) - A new Taiwanese television series that imagines the run-up to a Chinese invasion is getting rave reviews from viewers, who said the first programme featuring the sensitive topic is a wake-up call for the public facing heightened Chinese military threat. In the show, "Zero Day Attack", a Chinese war plane goes missing near Taiwan. China then sends swarms of military boats and planes for a blockade as Taiwan goes on a war footing. Panic ensues on the streets of Taipei. At viewings in Taipei last week attendees have included the top U.S. diplomat in Taiwan Raymond Greene, who is director of the American Institute in Taiwan, and Taiwanese tycoon Robert Tsao, a strident critic of Beijing. The series is set to premiere on August 2 in Taiwan, followed by its Japanese release on Amazon Prime Video. "Presenting such a situation (of conflict) can lead to more discussion about what we should do if it really turns into reality one day," said Blair Yeh, a 35-year-old engineer, after watching the first episode in the Taipei premier last week. The premise of "Zero Day Attack" is a topic that has for years been considered too sensitive for many Taiwan filmmakers and television show creators, who fear losing access to the lucrative Chinese entertainment market. More than half of the show's crew asked to remain anonymous on the crew list, and some people including a director pulled out of the production at the last minute, its showrunner Cheng Hsin Mei told Reuters. But as China steps up military threats, including at least six rounds of major war games in the past five years and daily military activities close to Taiwan, the upcoming drama confronts the fear by setting the 10-episode series around a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. The drama focuses on several scenarios Taiwan might face in the days leading up to a Chinese attack, including a global financial collapse, the activation of Chinese sleeper agents and panicked residents trying to flee the island. "Without freedom, Taiwan is not Taiwan," the actor who plays a fictional Taiwan president says in a televised speech, urging unity after declaring war on China, in the show's trailer. The live broadcast then gets abruptly cut off, replaced by a feed of a Chinese state television anchor calling for Taiwanese to surrender and to report "hidden pro-independence activists" to Chinese soldiers after their landing in Taiwan. "We've been comfortable for a long time now," said viewer Leon Yu, 43-year-old semiconductor industry professional, adding Taiwan's freedom and democracy must be kept. "There's still a lot of people out there burying their head in the sand and don't want to face the dangers of the present."

"Happy with the battery life and it easy enough to use. Overall good value for money amongst a lot of other smart watch/fitness trackers that are out there." However, another user was frustrated that the watch didn't work when placed over tattoos. They said: "No heart readings [over my tattoos] so I had to change arms and have it point where there's no ink." Someone else complained about the GPS tracking, saying it was "very inaccurate and disconnected frequently" They added: "Would not recommend if your aim is to monitor distance on runs/bike rides etc." But a five-star reviewer hailed the Google Fitbit Charge 6 for playing a big part in their weight loss journey. They said: "From little movement to 10km every morning. The best buy I have made. "Reduced weight by 2.5 stones and feel fitter than I have for years. The watch didn't actually achieve this but 100% contributed toward it." Another satisfied customer wrote: "I really like Fitbits and this is my second watch as my old Charge 5 died in the pool. I am blown away! A really solid battery life as usual from Fitbit and lots of tracking features too! "Love the new workouts and Google Maps, and the obsidian black colour looks great. It also is really simple to use and turns on when you look at it automatically. "The price is quite reasonable because of the performance you are getting and the accurate heart rate. The watch's aluminium frame is durable just like the old Charge 5!" Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
