Maoist-hit Bijapur gets closer to mainstream, one mobile tower at a time
Over the last 18 months, as operations against Maoists have picked up pace, the local administration has also embarked on a mission to bolster mobile connectivity, installing twice as many mobile towers as compared to the previous two years.
The Bastar region comprises seven districts — Bastar, Kondagaon, Kanker, Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur and Sukma. A look at anti-Maoist operations indicates Bijapur is the worst-hit, which makes implementing development activities a challenge, officials say. According to officials, Maoists destroy mobile towers as they believe these will help police informers in remote villages alert security forces.
Maoists have set on fire eight mobile towers in the district since 2022, including six in 2024-2025. However, the pushback by forces since 2024 has helped the administration install 48 mobile towers between January 2024 and June 2025, providing coverage to 110 villages in Bijapur. In comparison, 24 towers were installed in 2022 and 2023.
One of the mobile towers installed last month was in the Kutru area, where eight security personnel and a civilian driver were killed in an IED blast in January.
'As of mid-2025, significant strides have been made in enhancing mobile connectivity across Bijapur, particularly in its remote and previously insurgency-affected areas. Bijapur likely has around 45% of its villages covered by mobile network, with approximately 300 villages having coverage, many of which are currently part of ongoing government tower deployment efforts,' District Collector Sambit Mishra told The Indian Express.
Still, nearly 400 villages in Bijapur district continue to experience limited networks. Detailing the challenges, Bijapur SP Jitendra Kumar Yadav said, 'We made 20 camps in the last two years. It is difficult to install mobile towers; in the last two years, six towers have been sabotaged. We are able to install towers close to the camps. In a security vacuum, this is always difficult.'

Erecting mobile towers is challenging due to tough terrain, limited connectivity, and persistent security threats. Yet, every mobile tower we install brings a village closer to the mainstream — enabling digital access, financial inclusion, and emergency services. The grateful smile on the face of the villagers makes every effort worth it.'

BITS Pilani student found dead in hostel, institute says he ‘died in sleep': Report
A 20-year-old student from BITS Pilani's Goa campus was found dead in his hostel room on Saturday. The institute stated the death was 'natural' and that he had 'passed away in his sleep.' When he did not answer the door on Saturday, the hostel authorities were informed. The cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem on Sunday,' a police officer was quoted as saying by publication. In a statement, the institute confirmed that the deceased was a third-year dual degree student of BE Computer Science and MSc Economics, with a CGPA close to 9. 'The BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa Campus community is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its students today. He was found in an unresponsive state on his bed when his room was opened at around 11am (on August16), and the medical team confirmed that he had passed away in his sleep. The police were informed and have initiated the required procedures to ascertain the cause of death, and we are fully cooperating,' the institute's public relations officer Arjun Halarnkar was quoted as saying by The Times of India. 'His father called his friends to check about his son's whereabouts, wherein they tried a lot to open the door of his hostel block which was locked from inside. They later checked from the ventilator and found the student lying on the bed,' Halarnkar added. 4th death case in 9 months This marks the fourth student death reported at the BITS Pilani Goa campus in the past nine months. The previous three cases were suicides. The campus drew attention in May when the institute initiated an internal inquiry following three suicides reported since December 2024. The first case involved a 21-year-old second-year BE Computer Science and MSc Chemistry student from Uttar Pradesh, who died by suicide in December 2024. The second incident occurred in March 2025 and concerned a 20-year-old third-year dual degree student. The third case, reported in May 2025, involved a 20-year-old from Lucknow, a second-year dual degree student in MSc Chemistry and BE Electrical and Instrumentation, according to The TOI. In response, the institute announced a series of measures aimed at easing academic pressure and improving student well-being. These included overhauling the curriculum, expanding counselling services with professional psychologists, launching a 24×7 helpline, organising sessions with faculty to address student concerns, and introducing weekly psychiatrist consultations. The authorities also assured that 'students in distress were given flexibility to take examinations at a later time' and said new courses on mental and physical wellness and stress management would be part of the revised curriculum.

CBI arrests advocate, aide for seeking Rs 30-lakh bribe to secure favourable verdict in divorce case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Anti-Corruption Branch, Chandigarh, has arrested advocate Jatin Salwan and his aide on allegations of demanding Rs 30-lakh bribe to secure favourable judicial orders in a divorce case pending before a Bathinda court. As per a CBI official, Salwan was arrested and produced before the CBI court which sent him to judicial custody. Salwan's counsel refused to comment anything as of now. Salwan's aide Satnam Singh was caught by the CBI, following the complaint from Sector 9, Chandigarh, while he was allegedly accepting amount of Rs 4 lakh. He was also produced in the court with Salwan, and sent to judicial custody by the Chandigarh CBI court. According to the FIR, the case was registered under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 and Section 7-A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018). The FIR has been registered on a written complaint filed by Harsimranjit Singh, a resident of Firozepur. He alleged that Salwan demanded a bribe of Rs 30 lakh in exchange for ensuring a favourable order in the divorce case of his cousin, by misusing his personal influence on the judicial officer posted at Bathinda. The complaint was marked to Inspector Sonal Mishra, CBI, ACB Chandigarh, for verification. During verification, the allegations were substantiated. In a recorded conversation, Salwan allegedly demanded Rs 30 lakh for securing the court's order in favour of the complainant's cousin. He reportedly insisted that the complainant pay the bribe in full but later agreed to accept Rs 5 lakh as the first instalment. Salwan informed the complainant that someone on behalf of the judicial officer would collect the token money. During the conversation, he is specifically quoted as saying: 'rishwat de paise kade ghat nahi honde (bribe amounts are never negotiated or reduced)'. The CBI noted that the complaint and its verification prima facie disclosed the commission of offences under the BNS and Prevention of Corruption Act. Arrested in 2016 as well in NDPS Act case In 2016, advocate Salwan was also arrested by the Chandigarh Police. At that time, the police had caught a businessman, Sukhbir Singh Shergill's driver, with 2.6 kg opium and Rs 15 lakh in counterfeit currency. During investigation, it was revealed that this was part of a conspiracy to falsely implicate Shergill, in which Salwan's name also surfaced. In this case, Salwan and others were booked under the NDPS Act, though he was later granted bail. The case against Salwan and the other accused is still pending before the High Court.
