Queen Camilla hosted a powerful group of women who 'refuse to take 'no' for an answer' at Buckingham Palace—and made a strong statement about her hopes for a 'gender-equal world.'
On March 11, the Queen was joined by the likes of Victoria Beckham, Cherie Blair, and Penny Lancaster at a reception that celebrated the 15th anniversary of Women of the World (WOW), which Camilla serves as patron.
'Without fail, wherever WOW gathers, I have met the most extraordinary and impressive women who have, quite simply, refused to take 'no' for an answer,' Camilla said in a speech at the event, per The Telegraph.
'Some of them have a significant public profile,' she continued. 'Others can't be named because the work that they do would put their lives, or the lives of those whom they support, in danger. All of them have faced obstacles that could easily have intimidated them into a silent resignation to the status quo.'
Expressing her hopes for gender equality, Camilla acknowledged that 'the task of forging a gender-equal world is a daunting one. At the current rate, globally, it will take an estimated 286 years to remove discriminatory laws, 140 years for women to hold half the positions of leadership in the workplace, and 47 years to be represented equally in national parliaments. But by following in the footsteps of these amazing women and girls who will not take 'no' for an answer, we members of the WOW family fervently hope that this will be achieved in a much shorter time. Seeing you all here, I am filled with confidence that, together, we can make sure this happens.'
The Queen greeted guests in the palace's White Drawing Room, including Beckham, who dipped into an impressive curtsy for the Queen, much as Kate Middleton had done for King Charles at the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey the day prior.
The King and Queen hosted David and Victoria Beckham at their country home, Highgrove, last month, and Beckham—wearing a sleeveless metallic look—told the Queen at the March 11 reception that 'she had thoroughly enjoyed the Italian-themed evening, including the wine,' according to The Telegraph.
Lancaster, who in addition to her own accomplishments is married to Rod Stewart, said, per The Telegraph, 'I am a massive fan of the Queen. I think she has done an incredible job and continues to do so. Hearing her speak today at this event, I admire her tenacity and down-to-earthness.'
'She has got a lovely warmth to her,' Lancaster added.
