Former Solid Snake Actor Makes Admission About Metal Gear Solid 5
For a very long time, David Hayter was synonymous with Solid Snake. He was the first actor to voice the character in 1998's Metal Gear Solid and held onto the role until he was recast for Kiefer Sutherland for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Hayer was very attached to the character and didn't take losing the role well. He swore off playing MGS5 for a very long time, but is finally starting to move on. Hayter is back in the role with the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and he finally decided to give The Phantom Pain a chance.
"Well, there was reluctance," Hayter said of playing MGS5 in an interview with PC Gamer. "I didn't want to play the game because I figured it would hurt my feelings. Then, you know, 10 years went by and I was like, 'Ah, to hell with my feelings. What do I care?' … I'm a screenwriter, so I get fired for a living, like I literally, eventually, get fired from every single gig that I've got, and I'm not a child."
"I was like, 'Stop being a baby and play the game.' So I played it. It's amazing," Hayter added.
The Phantom Pain is light on story compared to other MGS games, but it has some of the best stealth gameplay ever produced, so it's good that Hayter finally gave it a shot. It also helped that he spent some time with Sutherland, who sounds like a great hang.
"I ran into Kiefer Sutherland at a bar in Dallas," Hayter said, "and we had a bunch of drinks. And he's a great guy, you know? No, no ill will. All is forgiven."

Before we get into the details on the above, let's look at what's happening with some local titles that either had terrific debuts or are continuing on in expansion. India's got two movies in the mix: Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie, and Hrithik Roshan and NTR Jr.-starrer War 2. Each opened with a bang. Estimates we are hearing put Coolie at $45.4M global, including about $27M from India. For War 2, comScore has $31.5M worldwide. As we always note, India is extremely ornery to track, and we will update accordingly. Either way, great starts for each. In other local news, this time in expanded overseas play via Crunchyroll/Sony, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle set new records with a $17.5M No. 1 opening in the eight Southeast Asian markets that debuted this weekend. The latest installment in the blockbuster anime franchise surpassed the entire regional lifetime for Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train as well as Frozen II for the highest all-time animated opening for this group of markets at current exchange rates. The launch was over twice as big as Inside Out 2, Super Mario Bros., Moana 2 and Ne Zha 2. In individual records, Indonesia, with $3.6M,logged the biggest anime opening ever and the highest opening weekend locally since Deadpool & Wolverine. Hong Kong, at $3.5M, had the largest anime opening ever and the top start since 2019. Thailand bowed to $3.2M, the best anime and animation opening of all time. Other anime records were set in Malaysia ($3.3M) and Vietnam ($2.5M). Infinity Castle has, of course, already broken records since its July release in Japan and still has several markets to release including the U.S., Mexico, Australia, UK, Spain, France and Germany. The global cume is estimated at $192.8M through Sunday. Turning back to the studio top-liners, New Line/WB's Weapons pulled in another $18.4M from 73 overseas markets for a 33% drop from opening weekend. The international running cume is $59.7M and the global cume to date is $148.8M through Sunday. Among strong individual holds were Chile (+2%), Sweden (-6%), Germany (-11%), Holland (-17%), Saudi Arabia (-22%), Philippines (-23%), Brazil (-25%), France (-28%), Italy (-29%), Mexico (-29%), Argentina (-30%) and Australia (-31%). In like-for-like markets and using today's exchange rates, the film is tracking ahead of Sinners (+47%), Smile (+42%), M3GAN (+41%) and 28 Years Later (+27%). The Imax cume is $13.8M global. Universal/DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys 2 continued its staggered offshore release this session, adding $13.7M from 67 markets (-34% in the holdovers). That brings the international running total to $60.2M, which is above the original at the same point. Globally, Bad Guys 2 crossed the century mark for $117.4M to date. New openers included China, where the gang bowed on Saturday amid stiff local competition (including an animated title), and stole away with $6.7M for the two-day debut — the biggest studio animation opening in the market this year. The start is above Elemental, and well above Trolls and The Bad Guys (which all opened on a Friday). The Maoyan score is 9.5 with the ticketing site predicting a $40M+ full run. Drops were very good in majors like France (-13%), Korea (-25%) and Spain (-29%) while increases were seen in Argentina (+10%) and Netherlands (+7%), among others. Still to release are Italy, Germany and Australia. The Top 5 to date are: UK ($11.8M), France ($6.7M), Spain ($5M), Mexico ($4.7M) and Korea ($2.4M). The Jurassic juggernaut continues for Universal with Jurassic World Rebirth adding another $9.9M in 83 offshore markets this 7th session. That's a 39% dip from last frame and takes the international cume to $496.5M. Global is now well across the eight-century mark, with $828.6M worldwide through Sunday. This weekend, JWR surpassed the overseas box office cumes of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Jumanji: The Next Level. Japan was a standout in its second frame despite local competition, already reaching $20.8M. All markets have been released, and the Top 5 to date are: China ($79M), UK ($46.4M), Mexico ($36M), Germany ($31.6M) and France ($27.7M). Marvel/Disney's The Fantastic Four: First Steps has reached a global cume through its fourth Sunday of $468.7M, still skewing domestic with a little over 47% from the international box office where the running cume is $221.7M. This overseas frame was $9.3M with all markets released. F4:FS is the highest-grossing superhero genre title of the year across Latin America and was again No. 1 in Brazil this weekend. The overall overseas drop was 48% and included good holds in such majors as France (-26%), Spain (-28%), Italy (-39%), Japan (-42%), Brazil (-43%), Mexico (-47%), Australia (-49%), UK (-49%) and Germany (-50%). The Top 5 offshore markets to date are: UK ($27.9M), Mexico ($26.2M), France ($14.3M), Brazil ($12.8M) and Australia ($10.6M). Meanwhile, last weekend's new Disney pic, Freakier Friday, grossed $9.3M in 47 material overseas markets, taking the offshore cume to $31.5M and global to $86.3M. The reteam of Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis dipped by just 37% internationally, and has been performing strongly in Latin America. This weekend it held the No. 1 spot in that region as a whole with great holds in some markets including Brazil (-22%) and Mexico (-32%). Currently playing in about 85% of the overseas footprint, Freakier Friday opens next weekend in Taiwan and has such majors as Korea (August 27) and Japan (September 5) on deck. The Top 5 to date are: Mexico ($5.7M), UK ($5.5M), Australia ($2.6M), Argentina ($1.8M) and Colombia ($1.4M). Capping off the trifecta of movies grossing $9.3M internationally this weekend, Apple Original Films' F1, via Warner Bros clocked only a 23% drop from last weekend – seriously impressive in the 8th frame. The international total is currently $407.2M and the global running cume is $590M through Sunday. In Korea, where audiences are driving hard, F1 is now the No. 1 movie of 2025, ahead of all local titles. In addition, this is the biggest film ever for Brad Pitt in the market and the 4th biggest WB film ever. WB/DC's Superman is also headed to $600M global, now at $594.5M through Sunday. Pulisic Controversy Has Turned Into A USMNT Off-The-Field Soap Opera
From now until the end of the 2026 World Cup, there will be an intriguing generational competition concerning the U.S. Men's National Team. No, not inside the team, but heroes of the past and the current squad. It has turned into an interesting off-the-field, he-said, he-said soap opera. The most recent bruhaha came after U.S. standout Christian Pulisic decided to sit out the team's involvement in the Concacaf Gold Cup, saying that he needed a rest after a grueling Serie A season for A.C. Milan. He got slammed by critics, including former USMNT stars that have a voice on TV, streaming, podcasts and blogs. His critics have included Landon Donovan, Alexi Lalas and Tony Meola, among others, who have shared their thoughts, opinions and analysis. Donovan makes his point "This is what it means to represent your country," Donovan said on the FOX broadcast of the UEFA Nations League final in June. He then citied Portugal superstar Ronaldo, who is 40 years old. "He's played a long season. He's tired," Donovan added. "He's out there grinding, hurt himself in the process. And I can't help but think about some of our guys on vacation, not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's p---ing me off." It should be noted that Donovan took time off from the national team in 2013. Pulisic makes his point In the latest episode of the docuseries PULISIC, the talented forward claimed that his critics 'disrespected me in a lot of ways, and just completely forgotten about what I've done for this national team." Pulisic, who turns 27 on Sept. 18, made his international debut in 2016. He has become the team's talisman, making 78 appearances while scoring 32 goals, a current team high. "To talk about my commitment? The commitment that I've given to this game? That I've given to my national team, you know, for 10 years?" said on docuseries. "I have paid the price. That's the only thing that starts to get on my nerves. But to be honest, it just fuels me to get back on the field and just shut everyone up and show everyone what I'm about, at the end of the day." Weah isn't happy Wait! It doesn't stop with Pulisic. USMNT teammate Tim Weah, who recently completed a transfer from Juventus to Marseille, called the former players who have dared to criticize the team as "evil." That's right, evil. "I think those guys are chasing checks, and for me, I just feel like they're really evil, honestly, because they've been players and they know what it's like when you're getting bashed," Weah said. Those are the same guys that'll turn around and shake your hand and try to be friends with you at the end of the day. "Don't get me wrong, I respect all of them. They were players that I looked up to. But quite frankly, the guys before us didn't win anything, either." Well, the earlier generations did set the table for the current team. Meola, for example, backstopped the U.S. in its first World Cup appearance in 40 years in 1990. But we'll have to do a U.S. soccer history in another piece. Mark Pulisic defends his son It should not come as a surprise that Pulisic's father, Mark, a former pro soccer player himself, backed his son. "These guys want clicks," he said. "On social media, it's 'subscribe to my channels, listen to my podcasts,' or whatever. I think they should look in the mirror and look at their last performances for the national team before they start talking s#@t." Lalas' response Those remarks opened the door for a response from Lalas on Fox and Meola on the Call It What You Want podcast on CBS Sports. Lalas wrote "don't bring your dad to a fight. I get that Mark Pulisic, like other dads out there, has been involved directly in bringing up, in this case, Christian. I get that he's a former coach. But who brings their dad to a fight? If you're angry at me or Landon or anybody else that is being critical of you, that's fine. You have a platform, you have a microphone – some would say bigger than anybody else out there – to get that off your chest, but you don't need to bring your dad. "Never once has it even occurred to have my father defend me from the slings and arrows that are inevitable but well done. You got me to watch, and you got exactly what you wanted." Meola has his say Meola and Mark Pulisic were teammates on the Oceanside Navahos team that captured the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association Boys Under-19 crown in 1987. Pulisic scored twice that day, including a late game-winner in a 2-1 triumph over B.W. Gottschee. 'I've been friends with Mark Pulisic for a long time. We played together at the youth level. You gotta stay out, Mark," Meola said. 'I know you're a dad, I know you get emotional, your kid is at the top of the heap, right? I've got other friends in other major sports in America that their kids right now are in top of the heap. They listen to this all the time about their kids. You can't respond. "Stay out. Christian is a big boy. He will be able to do this on his own. He will be able to carry this team.' This criticism and replies aren't about to go away anytime soon, if ever. The U.S. men have two friendlies coming up during the September FIFA international window against a pair of top-flight Asian sides. The Americans will face the Korea Republic at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J. on Sept. 6 before meeting Japan at Field in Columbus, Ohio on Sept. 9. Like it or not, Pulisic and his teammates will be under the microscopic and then some in those friendlies and anything concerning club or country from now until the end of the European domestic season in May and the first part of the Major League Soccer campaign before it takes its World Cup break. And those criticisms and opinions won't stop with the end of the World Cup. In the media environment that we live in today, it likely will continue forever. Who knows? After this generation of USMNT players retire, they might find themselves in a similar situation when they become media pundits and get an opportunity to share their opinions, criticisms and analysis about another generation.

While there are certainly interesting aspects of the game to unpack, the biggest attention-grabber occurred during a sideline interview in the third quarter. Rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who made his preseason debut after recently battling a hamstring injury, dropped a soundbite that is sure to go viral. When asked how he 'tunes out the noise,' the third-round draft pick responded with an interesting choice of words that had many fans immediately thinking of one man. 'That's just part of it… there's entertainers and there's competitors,' Gabriel said, via TheDayroomExperience X account. 'And I totally understand that, and my job is to compete… I just want to be the best teammate that I can and create an environment where we can all do our best work.' The 'entertainers' remark immediately put the spotlight on fellow rookie signal-caller Shedeur Sanders, who famously has a big personality and flashy appearance. However, given the nature of the question, which focused on 'the noise,' it is definitely possible Gabriel was talking about the media circus that is encircling the Browns QB room, and not his teammate. Do not forget, one reporter was caught on video mouthing 'I'm taller than him' in the spring, so it is possible the 24-year-0ld already has some reservations about the local press. A narrative will take shape regardless. Browns' Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders must push through all the hoopla Whether or not he intended to bring Sanders back into focus, Gabriel just threw gasoline on the QB controversy that was already brewing in Cleveland. He should know how the specific word 'entertainer' is going to be perceived by those watching. Although it is not a written part of the job description, a quarterback is supposed to ward off distractions when talking into a microphone. Unfortunately, this will have the opposite effect. Gabriel wants his game to speak louder than anything he said off the field, but while he did show some promise on Saturday afternoon, the All-American and former Oregon star posted a mixed outing. He completed 13-of-18 passes for 143 yards, while also throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown and committing a lost fumble on a handoff. Gabriel's pass-catchers share accountability on the pick-six — bunched-up and did not make a strong move for the ball — but he needs to recognize potential dangers during such unfavorable circumstances. Nevertheless, the young Hawaiian still made enough good throws to inspire some optimism. Since Shedeur Sanders is nursing an oblique injury, and Dillon Gabriel was sidelined last week, fans have still yet to see both signal-callers compete in the same exhibition game. Perhaps that will change in the Browns' preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams next Saturday. The team and NFL world can expect much speculation until that day arrives.
