Stunning Photos Show Iconic Beach City Blanketed in Foot of Rare Snow

Yahoo20-02-2025
The Atlantic coastal states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina saw their first major snowfall in years this week when a winter storm tore through the area, dumping up to a foot or more in some places. And while the snow made for some headaches for residents, it also transformed the tourist destination of Virginia Beach into a veritable winter wonderland.
The scene was captured by Charlottesville-based storm chaser and nature photographer Peter Forister, who posted a couple of surreal photos to social media on Thursday morning after the last of the flurries had come to a rest. In the first photo, the pristine, untouched snowfall contrasted against the calm skies; while in the second, the iconic Virginia Beach hotel strip could be seen blanketed in snow.
"The arctic? Nope, this is Virginia Beach," Forister captioned an Instagram post. "Spent the night covering a record-setting snowstorm in the Hampton Roads area. [Over 12 inches] is a massive storm for this area."
In a separate post shared to X, formerly Twitter, Forister shared video of the waves lapping the snowy shore. "Feeling arctic at the Virginia Beach oceanfront this morning," he wrote.
According to WTKR News 3, while most of the area saw six to 10 inches of snow accumulation, some parts of Virginia Beach saw snowfall in the double digits.
The places that recorded the highest snow totals were Macons Corner in Virginia Beach, the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake, and the Sigma community of Virginia Beach with 13 inches, 12.5 inches and 12.4 inches, respectively. Next, the storm is expected to move north up the east coast, where some areas may see flurries, snow showers and locally heavy snow squalls into Thursday evening.

'Lots of turbulence': Air Canada flyers describe cancellation, rebooking chaos amid strike

Travellers in Canada and abroad scrambled to secure flights on Sunday after striking Air Canada flight attendants defied a federal back-to-work order, abruptly halting the airline's plans to resume operations. Lila Rousseaux, who was scheduled to fly home with her family from Zurich to Toronto on Sunday, told CBC News she spent all of Saturday glued to her phone for news about whether her flight would be cancelled. At 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, she was informed it was. "I spent one and a half hours on the phone with the agent ... lots of turbulence," Rousseaux said. "There was a lot of inflexibility in terms of what can be done," she said, adding that her suggestions to take a train to Amsterdam to catch a plane or fly directly to the U.S. before driving across the border were rebuffed by the agent. WATCH | Lila Rousseaux describes 'turbulence' of rebooking flight: Rousseaux said she finally booked an "awful" overnight flight to Atlanta, lamenting that she is no longer being seated with children. "The distress in my family is very acute," she said. Ottawa moved to intervene in the labour dispute on Saturday, less than 12 hours after the strike and lockout took effect, with federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu saying she was invoking Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to ask the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to send the two sides to binding arbitration and to order the airline and its flight attendants back to work in the meantime. The Montreal-based airline subsequently announced early Sunday that it planned to resume flights in the evening, but just hours later, the union representing more than 10,000 flight attendants said in a statement that members would remain on strike — scuttling those plans and prompting Air Canada to cancel some 240 flights. WATCH | Hundreds of flight attendants picket at Vancouver airport: At Vancouver International Airport, passengers stood in long lines to get the latest updates on their delayed and cancelled flights, as workers outside demonstrated with signs reading, "Unpaid work won't fly." Chi Ehis told The Canadian Press she is having to pay an extra $2,000 to meet her family in Florida for a vacation after her flight was cancelled Sunday morning. Instead of flying straight from Vancouver, she is now taking a bus to Seattle before catching another, pricier flight. "I can't scream. I have to just figure out what to do," Ehis said, adding her plane ticket cost $1,500. WATCH | Tips for Air Canada passengers from travel influencer Moxey Munch: In Toronto, Khalid Muhammadi told CBC News he flew in from Dubai en route to Edmonton but is now stuck at Pearson International Airport. "WestJet is asking eight grand; what am I supposed to do?" he said. Muhammadi voiced frustrations with the federal government for not resolving the labour dispute. "You knew a strike was coming ... do your job." Air Canada has said passengers whose flights are cancelled will be offered a full refund or the opportunity to change their travel plans without a fee. However, it said that under Canada's airline passenger protection regulations, customers are not eligible for compensation for expenses incurred during travel delays deemed outside the airline's control. "Customers in Canada are not eligible for compensation for delayed or cancelled flights, meals, hotels or other incidental expenses for situations outside the carrier's control, such as a labour disruption," the airline said. Air Canada said in a news release that its flights would resume Monday evening, although a notice on its booking page said all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights were cancelled until further notice.

Qantas launches new flights to tropical Aussie islands near Indonesia

When dreaming of a tropical destination for a weekend escape, most Aussies picture Queensland's sun-drenched coastline or the iconic Great Barrier Reef. But closer to Bali lie several islands that are actually part of Australia; the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island. These island escapes – which boast snorkelling, diving, fishing, national parks and an abundance of wildlife – are now more accessible thanks to a new route launched by Qantas. The airline announced twice-weekly flights from Perth to the Indian Ocean Territories, with an additional Saturday service once a month. The new routes will replace Virgin Australia's former schedule, and are expected to boost visitor numbers to the remote communities. Chair of Christmas Island Tourism, David Watchorn, told Yahoo News that residents were excited about the announcement, as the islands rely heavily on tourism. 'Visitors bring energy and opportunity — creating jobs in accommodation, tours, hospitality, and retail,' he said. 'Unlike mining, which has a clear end date, tourism is renewable and sustainable, growing stronger as more people experience our extraordinary red crab migration, world-class diving, pristine nature, and vibrant culture. 'Tourism isn't just part of the economy — it's the pathway to a stronger, more diverse future for Christmas Island.' The phosphate mining industry has boosted the island's economy for over a century, but it's scheduled to end in 2034, leaving the territory more reliant on visitors than ever. 'This is about more than just flights,' Mr Watchorn said. 'It's about better connections for residents, better access to essential services, and putting the Indian Ocean Territories firmly on the map as a destination.' While the new Qantas schedule won't start until November 3, visitors are able to start booking flights from today, August 18. Flights will depart from Perth's international airport, and fares will include complimentary food and a 30kg baggage allowance. New flight route open between Cairns and Hamilton Island Another Aussie island escape is also welcoming the announcement of a new flight route, with Queensland-based East Air planning on operating a direct flight from Cairns to Hamilton Island. The service will also begin on November 3, and offer three flights a week to begin with, with the possibility of expanding if demand allows. 'This is an ideal opportunity for holidaymakers to maximise their time in Queensland and experience both of these exceptional destinations without additional costly and unnecessary travel and transfers,' East Air CEO Alan Milne said. It will be the first time the route has opened since pre-Covid times. Do you have a story tip? Email: newsroomau@ You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube.

Boil water advisory still in effect for Staunton. Water distribution at Gypsy Hill Park gym.

The City of Staunton remains under a boil water advisory for all water customers as of Aug. 17. Per city officials, crews continue to sample and test water from each pressure zone across the city. The city will continue to distribute water at the Gypsy Hill Park Gymnasium Aug. 17 while supplies are available. During this event, water has been donated by Walmart and Molson Coors Beverage Company. The distribution will be changing from water bottles to 12-pack cans of water as the inventory changes. Each vehicle will be limited to one 12-pack at the distribution site, per a release from the city. During a boil water advisory, customers should boil water before using it for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and let it cool before use. Continue to follow these precautions until the city notifies residents that the boil water advisory has been lifted. Sampling and testing of water continues across all pressure zones in the city. Crews were out as early as 2:40 a.m. to collect samples as soon as the required waiting time between tests had passed. The City of Staunton continues to work toward lifting the advisory as soon as test results confirm water safety. More: Wawa opens in Fishersville.
